About

Best known for producing innovative Christmas music albums, Mannheim Steamroller (the musical moniker for classically trained composer Chip Davis) has become one of the world's most influential and beloved instrumental acts. Of Mannheim Steamrollers' 36 million album sales, over 20 million of those sold have been Christmas albums--making Davis' music a holiday staple in many households worldwide. Davis started composing in a style he called "18th Century classical rock" in the mid '70s, recording the album Fresh Aire in 1975. The style--classical music played with electric bass and synthesizers--proved a little too novel for the mainstream market, so Davis created his own music label, American Gramaphone, and distributed his album to audio showrooms rather than record stores. His music became an instant hit with audiophiles (who frequented such showrooms) worldwide. Mainstream success finally came in the form of Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, Davis' first holiday album, which surprised the music industry by selling over 5 million copies. This groundbreaking hybrid sound of classical rock would ultimately be the precursor to the phenomenally successful new age music movement.

  • Very Good, But.

by Carl J on 11/28/23North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North CharlestonRating: 4 out of 5

First, Mannheim Steamroller was terrific. Enjoyed the concert very much. The Performing Arts Center is a very nice venue and all the employees were helpful and it was well staffed. My one complaint was the bar, I thought $14 was a lot for a gin tonic but during the break I decided to order it. It tasted like very little gin, water, little ice, and no lime. A true waste of time and money I guess I assumed wrong, I thought for that price it would be a good drink, not so much. Thank you

  • Great experience, wonderful music and visual entertainment

Truly outstanding musicians and music with excellent video and lighting integration. A bit too much self promotion and back-slaping. Could have done without "Convoy."

  • Still a great show!

The show seemed to be scaled down from when Chip Davis performed live in San Diego's Sports Arena but it is still a great show. I took my son and daugter-in-law for their first time and they absolutely loved it!

  • A wonderful time with great music.

Excellent performance. Enjoyed watching the performers almost as much as I enjoyed the music.

  • Outstanding

by Eon on 11/27/23North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

Mannheim Steamroller doesn’t disappoint. Been listening to their music since the first time I heard the Christmas music on the radio and now own all of the releases. To sit in a venue feeling the music vibrating through you and the lights dancing to to the rhythm of the music. The orchestration of each piece does not take away from the original composition. Thank you to Chip Davis, all the musicians and technicians for sharing your beautiful music.

  • Absolutely phenomenal!

I haven't been to a concert in many years and never realized how much I was missing. This was just amazing!

  • The Best Christmas Show Always

by Matt M on 11/27/23North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

Mannheim Steamroller does the best Christmas Show and kicks off the season perfectly. The performances are true to the sound and the stories and visuals compliment the music. Great crowd of all ages too. The venue did not clarify seats with obstructed views so some seats in the orchestra area did not offer a clear view of the stage. That detail would have made a difference in my purchase. I’ll know for next time.

Definitely hope they will be in Charleston SC annually because I will be there every time! Thank you to each member of the group and all who worked to create this spectacular multisensory experience! • Very outdated show

by One man show on 11/27/23North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North CharlestonRating: 2 out of 5

Was not a fan of this event. It was very outdated like from the late 90’s early 2k’s . The background footage didn’t match what they were playing . Would not go back

  • OK Concert

by 1980s Fan on 11/27/23North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North CharlestonRating: 3 out of 5

Concert was OK. The images on the screen behind the musicians were very distracting. I enjoyed the music more when I closed my eyes and just listened. The selections didn't seem as full and breathtaking as they did when I attended a MS concert a few years ago.

  • Program was severely outdated

by Christy on 11/27/23North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North CharlestonRating: 1 out of 5

I saw this show in the 90's and was blown away and left with life long memories of how amazing it was. This show was nothing close to being awesome, it was BORING! I can't believe how outdated their images and music selection was. I felt like I went back to the 1980's based on their level of technology and graphics on stage. Very disappointed.

  • Good Preformance

by Deb on 11/26/22ArcBest Corporation Performing Arts Center - Fort Smith - Fort SmithRating: 4 out of 5

The only improvements I would recommend is that more Christmas music be played after all it was a Christmas concert. Green sleeves needs to be removed or drastically updated. Finally, I think your supporting orchestra should have been personalized.
