MANNHEIM STEAMROLLER: CHRISTMAS IN CONCERT:

Mannheim Steamroller have been innovators of the neo-classical genre for over 40 years, blending the finest orchestral sections with electronic elements and a hint of rock to arrive at their remarkably unique sound. Not only are their live performances sonically robust, but they're visually stimulating as well, featuring an incredible light show and illustrations that dance across giant projection screens. Whether they're playing originals like "Catching Snowflakes on Your Tongue" or classics like "Joy to the World," Mannheim Steamroller will have fans in the holiday spirit this season on their 2014 Christmas tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Mannheim Steamroller is the alias of composer Chip Davis, who created the moniker from "Mannheim roller", a musical technique that was popular in Germany during the 1700s. Davis initially sought a record label to release his music, but the lack of interest led to the creation of his own label American Gramophone for his 1975 debut album Fresh Aire. He went on to release seven more albums in the Fresh Aire series, six of which were certified gold by the RIAA. His biggest success, however, came in 1984 with the release of Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, a massive hit and enduring classic of contemporary holiday music. Since then, his Christmas catalog has grown to include thirteen records, containing some of Steamroller's biggest hits and holding the distinction of being some of the most requested Christmas music of all time.  With more than 28 million albums sold in the US, Mannheim Steamroller will carry their musical enthusiasm with them throughout their 2014 shows.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"The band delivered from start to finish. What a wonderful way to get in the holiday spirit! Their musicianship is top notch and their performance is very entertaining."

"Great concert with remarkable renditions of Christmas music. They are a very professional ensemble that made the event enjoyable and memorable."

"I loved the Christmas concert!! The music, the video, and the interaction with the audience is amazing! I would definitely go see them again!"

  • The Biggest Sound I know

by SouthernLadyGrace on 11/23/10Mississippi Coliseum - JacksonRating: 5 out of 5

It was so easy to select and order tickets on the internet, then pick them up locally at my convenience. We loved the concert. We know the orchestra well and knew what to expect but were still amazed and thrilled with the music.

  • The worst concert I have ever seen.

by DrGJW on 11/23/10Mississippi Coliseum - JacksonRating: 1 out of 5

I've been going to concerts since the 60's and I can say with complete candor that this was the worst concert I have ever seen. They had old pictures flashing in the background, piped in vocals, and absolutely no stage presence. The best comparison would be a concert at a retirement home put on by 90 year olds. It really was that bad. So many people walked out at intermission that the door attendant asked if the concert was over. The worst concert ever. Music was almost unrecognizable. It was pathetic.

  • Mannheim Steamroller: Christmas

by Vicksmegg on 11/23/10Mississippi Coliseum - JacksonRating: 5 out of 5

After listening to their music for years, this was my first time to see Mannheim Steamroller in person but will not be the last if I have an opportunity to see them again. WOW is to put it mildly, Beautiful would be another word to describe the music and extremely entertaining would be appropriate for the members performing. Of course to say Blessed with outstanding talent would be an understatement. These muscians are certainly using their God given talents in a beautiful way. I highly recommend attending one of their concerts!!!!!

  • Dissappointing

by JennyTurk on 11/23/10Jackson - JacksonRating: 2 out of 5

I was very dissappointed with Mannheim Steamroller. The music was nice, but the videos and lights were not impressive at all. My family got very tired of the medieval videos. There was nothing spectacular about the lights. The music was also very quiet. The encore was the best, which was the last three songs. I would not recommend this concert to anyone.

  • Mannheim Steamroller was a geat evening.

by Anonymous on 11/23/10Mississippi Coliseum - JacksonRating: 5 out of 5

The evening was exceptional. The Mannheim Steamroller with 15 artisit presented an excellent Christmas show. They all are very talented musicians and fantastic performers. They seemed to enjoy playing for us as much as we enjoyed listening.

  • Mannheim Steamroller show needs facelift!

    by jsb2010 on 11/23/10Mississippi Coliseum - JacksonRating: 3 out of 5

The musicians of Mannheim Steamroller are awesome. The music of the show is virtually identical to the CD versions of the songs. I guess I expected the live show to include something else, be more exciting than just performing the music well, and have modern bling. Sorry, it doesn't. The "high-tech" flair consists mostly of old video clips and video stories behind the music, all of which look like 1980 vintage. Come on guys; isn't it way passed time to get the show modernized? A little less Renaissance music would be great, too -- I know it's heavy on Chip's likings, and it's performed very well, but it's just too much.

  • lacking

    by mary321 on 11/23/10Mississippi Coliseum - JacksonRating: 3 out of 5

The music was wonderful,a nd moving. I jsut don't see how you can have a program so full of Christmas music with no mention of Christ. Even on Silent Night, the words were hummed, not sang. The film playing in the background never showed anything that hinted that the reason for this season is the birth of our savior. The music was excellent, but the program lacked the very reason for why we were all there.

  • Mannheim needs steam

by Christmasperson on 11/23/10Mississippi Coliseum - JacksonRating: 3 out of 5

While I love the music, seeing them in person was disappointing. The program needs more pizazz, especially the selections using the Renaisance scenes as a backdrop.

  • by Anonymous on 11/23/10Mississippi Coliseum - JacksonRating: 3 out of 5

Love the music, but their videos are old and need to be updated. Lighting was not that great either. Enjoyed watching the musicians, they seem to love what they are doing.

  • by MamaK222 on 11/23/10Mississippi Coliseum - JacksonRating: 5 out of 5

The concert was wonderful! We had seats on the 6th row but they were way over to the side. During intermission, we moved toward the back and in the middle and could see the stage much better. The sound was great! Enjoyed it very much!

  • Fabulous Concert!

by Vikilee on 11/23/10Mississippi Coliseum - JacksonRating: 5 out of 5

What an amazing, talented group of people. I have all of their cd's and the live music is just as beautiful as the recorded version. I was excited that it was the original members of Manheim, as I understand they have two groups touring. I have always enjoyed their music and never dreamed they would come to Jackson. One of the best concerts I have ever attended. Wow!

  • Wonderful

by Daverx on 11/23/10The Centre - EvansvilleRating: 5 out of 5

I was totally impressed with the quality of the musicians. There were no dull moments, always entertaining. The song selection was full of suprises. The video background was impacting. Sometimes the Bass sound was too overwhelming....

  • Sunday Evening with Mannheim

    by Ary1 on 11/23/10Mississippi Coliseum - JacksonRating: 4 out of 5

Jackson was one of the sites abandoned by Trans Siberian Orchestra 2 years ago when they opted for larger & more urban venues. This was a shame given we were practically filling our aging Coliseum for their annual date. For some reason, Mannheim, the originators of electronic Christmas concerts, were not as well recognized here & this may account, in part, for the much smaller turnout. Against this backdrop we only managed 1500-2000 in attendance for what was an excellent concert. They were well received. However, a 4pm or 5pm concert time- rather than 7- would have brought a considerably larger crowd on a Sunday. Also, it was a shame not to sell floor seats on rows 2,3, 6,7, & 8 in the center section. Those seats would have been enjoyed by those farther back on the floor. Also, I really believe the MS marketing should consider a $20 or $25 ticket even if it were in the top. ) I think folks would have filled many of the thousands of empty seats. This would have been a nice crowd in Thalia Mara Hall. I wonder what the rent charge diffreence actually was. This may have been the last time we have either TSO or MS during the Christmas season. Nevertheless, skillful marketing could have brought this excellent concert to a much larger audience.

  • Mannheim Steamroller rang in the Christmas season!

    by Wink751 on 11/23/10Mississippi Coliseum - JacksonRating: 5 out of 5

It was awesome! Sounds like a cliche, but it truly was! I've admired them for many, many years and so thankful I had the opportunity to see them and experience this. It is amazing that such sound can come from so few people!!!

  • Really Good!!

  • The "Roller" Rules

by Swimom on 11/23/10Mississippi Coliseum - JacksonRating: 5 out of 5

How can so many emotions be involved in a single concert??? I went from clapping and swaying my seat (no dancing from true southern belles) to crying most of the way through the beautiful rendition of Silent Night (my all time favorite Manneheim arrangement EVER.) It truly was one of my life's dreams come true to hear them in concert. Thanks to whoever brought them to Jackson.

  • A Very Enjoyable Evening

by TerryLS on 11/22/10The Centre - EvansvilleRating: 4 out of 5

Overall it was a very enjoyable evening. The background videos and other projected images lent a nice air to the sound filling the theater. The synthesizer and other unique instruments truely make for the Mannheim Steamroller sound.

  • Loved Mannheim Steamroller

Really enjoyed the total multimedia experience and of course the arrangements were outstanding. Bring them back again soon.
