MANNHEIM STEAMROLLER: CHRISTMAS IN CONCERT:

Mannheim Steamroller have been innovators of the neo-classical genre for over 40 years, blending the finest orchestral sections with electronic elements and a hint of rock to arrive at their remarkably unique sound. Not only are their live performances sonically robust, but they're visually stimulating as well, featuring an incredible light show and illustrations that dance across giant projection screens. Whether they're playing originals like "Catching Snowflakes on Your Tongue" or classics like "Joy to the World," Mannheim Steamroller will have fans in the holiday spirit this season on their 2014 Christmas tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Mannheim Steamroller is the alias of composer Chip Davis, who created the moniker from "Mannheim roller", a musical technique that was popular in Germany during the 1700s. Davis initially sought a record label to release his music, but the lack of interest led to the creation of his own label American Gramophone for his 1975 debut album Fresh Aire. He went on to release seven more albums in the Fresh Aire series, six of which were certified gold by the RIAA. His biggest success, however, came in 1984 with the release of Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, a massive hit and enduring classic of contemporary holiday music. Since then, his Christmas catalog has grown to include thirteen records, containing some of Steamroller's biggest hits and holding the distinction of being some of the most requested Christmas music of all time.  With more than 28 million albums sold in the US, Mannheim Steamroller will carry their musical enthusiasm with them throughout their 2014 shows.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"The band delivered from start to finish. What a wonderful way to get in the holiday spirit! Their musicianship is top notch and their performance is very entertaining."

"Great concert with remarkable renditions of Christmas music. They are a very professional ensemble that made the event enjoyable and memorable."

"I loved the Christmas concert!! The music, the video, and the interaction with the audience is amazing! I would definitely go see them again!"

  • Very special Christmas music

by ttom on 11/28/10Pensacola Saenger Theatre - PensacolaRating: 5 out of 5

Evidenced by Mannjeim Steamroller's CD sales for over 25 years, this high energy music has lasting popularity. Seeing it come to life on stage with such an array of instruments takes it to a new level. This, coupled with the well selected vidios played to the music on the back screen, creates exceptional entertainment from start to finish

Mannheim's music was awesome!! Their talent is amazing...The concert was a wonderful way to begin the Christmas season. I would, however, recommend an update of their video presentation; the "three frames" on the screen were distracting and outdated.

  • Good but not great

    by Kiltman1 on 11/27/10Greensboro Coliseum Complex - GreensboroRating: 4 out of 5

Let me say first that I love the music of Mannheim Steamroller. The performance of the musicians that were there was excellent. What disappointed me was this: There are two touring groups, one for the West Coast and one for the East Coast. It seems that the West Coast group has a couple of musicians dedicated to playing synthesizers and harpsichord. In Greensboro, the "East Coast" group had one keyboardist, and while quite good, he mainly played piano and the synthesizer sounds that are so much a part of Mannheim Steamroller music were not played live. The feeling that they were playing against/with prerecorded sounds just put me off. Having said that, it was a great venue at War Memorial Coliseum and the music was excellent, especially the encore.

  • Beyond Awful

by JohnMarc56 on 11/27/10Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts - New OrleansRating: 1 out of 5

I have listened to Mannheim Steamroller for years, but this was my first concert. Five of us walked out at intermission. We spent $350 on tickets, and I felt violated and wanted to curl up in a ball in a corner when I got home. The special effects were so awful, I felt like I was watching a community college performance. The musicians were talented, but their 70's Renaissance Festival costumes looked cheap and outdated. Also, the fog machine must have been the Wal mart variety as it spewed and coughed dense smoke which would hide the musicians through half the show, which might have been a blessing. The worst part of the production were the videos, which were irrelevant and outdated. One appeared to be a vintage war time video punctuated with characters smoking cigarettes, screaming, some rough affection, and other bizarre content. The videos were like watching a Fellini film or a wierd SNL digital short. We sat in horror as each song crashed into the next, when the sound levels were properly adjusted. the music was bland, sanitized and obviously much of it was pre-recorded, especially the vocals. Horrible. The icing on the cake was Chip Davis' introductory bizarre video which literally sucked the life force from my soul. He was the founder, and cannot attend all performances other than the Macy's Parade float, due to his "bad back"...

  • Mannheim Steamroller is awesome!

We saw them in concert 5 years ago in another state and the video display during the performance was the same as 5 years ago. However, we really enjoy listening to the music and watching the musicians perform. This is their 25th Anniversary of the Christmas Tour, so they may have captured the concert video as the highlight of their 25 years. The concert did not blow you away with the loudness of their music.

I had never really listened to their music that much before but I went with a friend and I'm really glad I went. The music was wonderful, and the musicians were great! They made it very fun. This is great for adults as well as kids and I highly recommend it.

  • "Mannheim Steamroller" show is in my top 5 list!

by rrrg on 11/26/10Pensacola Saenger Theatre - PensacolaRating: 5 out of 5

The Saenger was an excellent venue for the "Mannheim Steamroller" concert blend of musicians; various instruments, including a few I'd never seen or heard; the video presentation; and the set-up. I appreciate some of the musicians taking time to sign autographs in the lobby and meet so many fans, instead of doing what many artists do: just meet and greet those on the front row or those who, even though they are on the front row, did not have their ticket number or name chosen in a lottery-type way of deciding who could go backstage (i.e., Martina McBride at the Civic Center). The ushers were most helpful in locating seats and giving directions to restroom facilities. This is a very, very minor detail and was not an inconvenience, but I purchased my ticket as a "will call" and when I arrived, I joined others in a line trying to get into the left front door - as the sign indicated. There was a "rope" from the sidewalk to the entrance and the sign indicated that "will call" ticket purchasers should go to the left (according to the arrow) of the rope, when, in fact, they were to go to the right, with everyone else, and go through one of the left middle doors. As I said, not a bother, but perhaps that sign and a rope could be placed somewhere else, leading to one of the middle left doors in the future, since there was no admittance through the left door at all.

  • This was Amazing!

I was so excited to see the Mannheim Steamroller Concert in person: It was truly an amazing concert. The experience was amazing and almost magical the way they incorporated the music with the videos and light show. Spectacular evening.

  • Mannheim Steamroller

by vlcarp on 11/26/10Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts - New OrleansRating: 4 out of 5

The music was beautiful and very seasonal. I enjoyed it immensely. However, the movies/vignettes playing in the background were less than appreciated. The rennaisance festival that played such major parts in the show were less than seasonal and at times very distracting. The silhouettes dancing during the last song were down right creepy and at the end reminded me of a rorsshach test. Sorry to be so harsh, but the background detracted a great deal from my enjoyment of the concert. I had nightmares of giant disembodied bunny heads!!!

  • Manheim Steamroller

    by Stella787 on 11/26/10Pensacola Saenger Theatre - PensacolaRating: 4 out of 5

I have been a fan of Manheim Steamroller for 20 yrs. I was quite anxious to finally see them in person. Their music is manificent. However, I am not a fan of Midevil and the big screen displays were very much midevil. They were better just playing the Christmas favorites as only they can play them. When they finally got to their songs, arrangements it was more than expected.

This venue is very nice, its not too large or too small. Getting there was very easy. Thoroughly enjoyed the show.

I've waited since 1984 for Mannheim Steamroller to appear in the Bossier City/Shreveport area. The show was all I expected and more. My only regret was my husband was not alive to finally see them. Thanks for a great show
