MANNHEIM STEAMROLLER: CHRISTMAS IN CONCERT:

Mannheim Steamroller have been innovators of the neo-classical genre for over 40 years, blending the finest orchestral sections with electronic elements and a hint of rock to arrive at their remarkably unique sound. Not only are their live performances sonically robust, but they're visually stimulating as well, featuring an incredible light show and illustrations that dance across giant projection screens. Whether they're playing originals like "Catching Snowflakes on Your Tongue" or classics like "Joy to the World," Mannheim Steamroller will have fans in the holiday spirit this season on their 2014 Christmas tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Mannheim Steamroller is the alias of composer Chip Davis, who created the moniker from "Mannheim roller", a musical technique that was popular in Germany during the 1700s. Davis initially sought a record label to release his music, but the lack of interest led to the creation of his own label American Gramophone for his 1975 debut album Fresh Aire. He went on to release seven more albums in the Fresh Aire series, six of which were certified gold by the RIAA. His biggest success, however, came in 1984 with the release of Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, a massive hit and enduring classic of contemporary holiday music. Since then, his Christmas catalog has grown to include thirteen records, containing some of Steamroller's biggest hits and holding the distinction of being some of the most requested Christmas music of all time.  With more than 28 million albums sold in the US, Mannheim Steamroller will carry their musical enthusiasm with them throughout their 2014 shows.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

  • OK, but lighting was hard on eyes

by Glow12445 on 12/3/10Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport NewsRating: 3 out of 5

The show was good, but we were sitting in the dress circle and the lights shown up there in our eyes for about 1/3 of the show and we had to close our eyes. At one point when the lights turned up, there was a moan heard in the dress circle. The show was great other than what we could only hear..

  • Awesome!

Definitely worth every second of the performance! A group of very talented musicians that put on a phenomenal show. Really magical, hits you in the depths of your soul and adds to the wonderous Christmas spirit!!! A must see!

Disappointing for the money. Quite a bit to pay to watch a video! No doubting the talent of the musicians, but only having a video for "special effects" and background was a let down. Especially for the price.

  • Phenominal !

Tickets to this concert were a gift from my husband, and I anxiously awaited the evening. We were not disappointed! The music was amazing, and production was fantastic! We truly enjoyed every second.

  • classic steamroller

by concerttime on 12/1/10Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 4 out of 5

a solid showing of steamrollers christmas hits-there were several hiccups during performance such as minor lighting issues(lighting aimed in audiences eyes),unbalanced sound volume(at times bass and drums drowned out all else),and a dead mic during vocals.all in all a recommended show.

Amazing! Have been listening to Mannheim Steamroller for 20 years, but this is our first time seeing them live. Better than I could have imagined! Will definitely splurge and make this an annual Christmas tradition!!

  • Mannheim Steamroller - MARVELOUS!

by NCgolfer48 on 12/1/10Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 4 out of 5

I've listened to MS's music for years and was really excited to see them in person. I was not disappointed. So few people making such great sounds was incredible. The video that accompanied some of the music was very well done - the synchronization (if that's a word) was marvelous. Please go see them if you ever get a chance.

  • The show was an advertisement for itself.

by Terrible42 on 12/1/10Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 1 out of 5

I was very dissappointed by this show even from the 15th row. Out of a dozen shows I have seen this year, this was the worst. The show consisted of about 20 musicians, lighting and videos. The videos were very outdated, of poor quality, and low resolution, and most importantly, they did not seem to match the theme of the show. With the exception of 5 musicians, the remainder were hidden behind the music stands. Some of the lead musicians had poor stage presence. There was a lot of promotion of the show in the videos which was quite tacky.

  • Disappointing

by AlfiesDad on 12/1/10Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 1 out of 5

While not bad, it would have been nice to know before hand that we weren't getting the real Mannheim Steamroller, that we were just getting the 2nd string, as it were Special Effects, etc. weren't nearly as good as when they were here a couple of years ago.

  • Mannheim Steamroller Christmas Extroidnaire

by PGHBOB on 12/1/10Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

I've been a fan for 25 years and love their music. Chip Davis is a super-talent in my book! The performers were terrific and "audience friendly". My wife (who is not a fan) also actually enjoyed the show.

This concert met my expectations. I had purchased seating specifically to sit straight on to the stage. My section was closed and we were moved to another section which was on a lower level but faced the side of the stage. While we were still able to enjoy the concert i would have much preferred to be straight on to the stage.

  • That sure got us in the holiday spirit --

by SailorPeg on 12/1/10Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 4 out of 5

WOW -- what a great show to start off the holidays! The music was even better than we expected. My only recommendation would be that they cut some of the "old English" videos they showed while they were playing.

  • STEAMROLLER JUST GETS BETTER!!!

  • Mannheim Steamroller - Fantastic!

by WakeForestNC on 12/1/10Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

This concert was incredible! I can still hear the music in my head and visualize them playing. They are all very talented. The Drummer was amazing. I haven't see any band play with such enjoyment and gusto. Next year I plan on taking everyone in my family. It is a concert for all ages!

  • The "Steamroller" rolls on!

by CaryCrew on 12/1/10Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

My wife and I went to see Mannheim Steamroller in Raleigh on November 29th, knowing that this would be the beginning of the Christmas season for us. As an owner of most of their Christmas albums, I was very familiar with their music. Yet, hearing them live, for the third time, brought chills to my spine and tears to my eyes. Their renditions of some of the world's great holiday music are like no other. Tastefully done, yet full of energy and verve, this group of musicians thrilled me from the opening song to the end of their three song encore. I left the concert with a smile on my face and a wonderful feeling in my heart, knowing that my favorite time of year is now in full swing. Thanks to Chip Davis for creating this sound and for keeping it going, even though he is no longer able to perform his beautiful music in concert.

  • Mannheim Steamroller was AMAZING!
