MANNHEIM STEAMROLLER: CHRISTMAS IN CONCERT:

Mannheim Steamroller have been innovators of the neo-classical genre for over 40 years, blending the finest orchestral sections with electronic elements and a hint of rock to arrive at their remarkably unique sound. Not only are their live performances sonically robust, but they're visually stimulating as well, featuring an incredible light show and illustrations that dance across giant projection screens. Whether they're playing originals like "Catching Snowflakes on Your Tongue" or classics like "Joy to the World," Mannheim Steamroller will have fans in the holiday spirit this season on their 2014 Christmas tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Mannheim Steamroller is the alias of composer Chip Davis, who created the moniker from "Mannheim roller", a musical technique that was popular in Germany during the 1700s. Davis initially sought a record label to release his music, but the lack of interest led to the creation of his own label American Gramophone for his 1975 debut album Fresh Aire. He went on to release seven more albums in the Fresh Aire series, six of which were certified gold by the RIAA. His biggest success, however, came in 1984 with the release of Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, a massive hit and enduring classic of contemporary holiday music. Since then, his Christmas catalog has grown to include thirteen records, containing some of Steamroller's biggest hits and holding the distinction of being some of the most requested Christmas music of all time.  With more than 28 million albums sold in the US, Mannheim Steamroller will carry their musical enthusiasm with them throughout their 2014 shows.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

  • Mannheim Steamroller was truly remarkable!

by munchabunch on 12/4/10Independence Events Center - IndependenceRating: 5 out of 5

I would give Mannheim Steamroller : Christmas a 5 star "Amazing" rating. The concert was truly remarkable because I enjoyed the music while watching the musicians perform. I could tell they really did enjoyed performing the different Christmas songs, and they enjoyed playing as an ensemble. I have loved their music from the beginning, 25 years ago. This was the first time I watched them perform live, and I witnessed 25 years of Christmas joy.

Definitely worth seeing after years of enjoying their albums.

  • Mannheim Steamroller: Christmas should be seen.

    by lkjones60 on 12/4/10Independence Events Center - IndependenceRating: 4 out of 5

Mannheim Steamroller is a classic and always a precursor to Christmas. Their music is classic and always endearing. I saw them about 10 years ago at Kemper and the production was unforgettable, a set Christmas scene on the floor, snow at the end of the show, a real performance! I was disappointed with the lackluster performance at the Event Center. I paid a lot more for the tickets and felt like I recieved a lot less. They kept talking about the East Coast and West Coast tours and I felt like we got the leftover midwest tour. The seats and the haze at the Event Center were both uncomfortable. All that said, I still love the music of Mannheim and would still recommend them.

Have been a fan of Mannheim Steamroller since the 80's. What a tremendous treat to finally be able to see them live. Incredible how so few artists can make so much wonderful sound.

  • Need a change

by revchuck on 12/4/10Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport NewsRating: 4 out of 5

I went to see The Mannheim Steamroller Christmas show for the 2nd time. It was good but I think they need to change the show. They played the same songs again that I saw 2 years ago.To me it just lost alittle excitement. All of the guys were good as always. The drummer was the best. I would say if you had not seen the show please go and be enertained. If you have seen them in the pass count on seeing and hearing the same songs.

  • Great Show

by Anonymous on 12/4/10Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport NewsRating: 4 out of 5

Show for the most part was great. Performers were very personable. Did not like Chip Davis clip. Was too off color, not professional and inmature.

We thoroughly enjoyed the show. It had been changed from shows in years past to add a freshness to the performance. We are now in the Christmas spirit from seeing the performance.

  • A Wonderful way to Begin the Holiday Season

by ThomasStreetFan on 12/4/10Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport NewsRating: 5 out of 5

My husband and I bought the tickets for this concert months ago thinking that it would be a good way to start the Christmas season. We were so right! The Ferguson Center is a beautiful venue with amazing acoustics and the performance by these individuals was breathtaking. I can certainly understand why they have withstood the test of time for the last 25 years. They continue to reinvent themselves and make even the best of old traditional Christmas music sound new and fresh. I had to order the 25th Anniversary Christmas set just to recall the wonderful experience!

  • Mannheim Steamroller made my holiday season!

by cafemgr on 12/4/10Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport NewsRating: 5 out of 5

This concert was non-stop entertaining, with multi-faceted, multi-talented musicians that are simply amazing. It is one thing to listen to the group's fantastic holiday music every year, but it is a complete and totally different experience to see and hear it in person. I hope I have this same opportunity every year.

  • Mannheim Steamroller was incredible!

by rockislandridge on 12/3/10Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport NewsRating: 5 out of 5

The music was outstanding - I enjoyed seeing performers who had been with the band for 25 yrs playing alongside young men in their 20's. The scenes displayed to provide some kind of storyline for each of the songs were perfect. I thought they complemented the music well. Great performances by all the band as well as the orchestra.

  • Put me in the Christmas Mood

by jj1n on 12/3/10Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport NewsRating: 4 out of 5

My sister and I took our mother to see this show for her birthday, and we really enjoyed it! The music was amazing, and the performance was entertaining. Some of the movies in the backround were a bit odd, but thats artistic vision I guess. Overall I would recommend the experience.

  • Listen to the CD

by 01Kia on 12/3/10Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport NewsRating: 3 out of 5

The sound was exactly like the cd perfect but....I hate to say it because I love MS...but the show was boring. The absolute worst part was the horrible little movie that played in the background. It really took away from the musicians and made me angry that I was subjected to the awful acting and scenery while just trying to enjoy the music. I was also close enough to see their "clothes - white-tails" which are poorly fitted and have been through the wringer a few times turning them practically into polyester leisure suits - ...not attractive. If their gross sales are more than ELvis' then spend a dime on clothes and a good movie producer, Marc Gordon is from this area, try him....really. But I do love the music, it is not Christmas without it.

  • FANTASTIC

I got caught up in the music. I didn't want to leave. I wish I had bought tickets to the 7 PM show as well.

I have always enjoyed the MS music, to hear it live was the CD times two. The show had some video projected on three screens that added to the show. Will go next year if it comes to this area...
