MANNHEIM STEAMROLLER: CHRISTMAS IN CONCERT:
Mannheim Steamroller have been innovators of the neo-classical genre for over 40 years, blending the finest orchestral sections with electronic elements and a hint of rock to arrive at their remarkably unique sound. Not only are their live performances sonically robust, but they're visually stimulating as well, featuring an incredible light show and illustrations that dance across giant projection screens. Whether they're playing originals like "Catching Snowflakes on Your Tongue" or classics like "Joy to the World," Mannheim Steamroller will have fans in the holiday spirit this season on their 2014 Christmas tour.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Mannheim Steamroller is the alias of composer Chip Davis, who created the moniker from "Mannheim roller", a musical technique that was popular in Germany during the 1700s. Davis initially sought a record label to release his music, but the lack of interest led to the creation of his own label American Gramophone for his 1975 debut album Fresh Aire. He went on to release seven more albums in the Fresh Aire series, six of which were certified gold by the RIAA. His biggest success, however, came in 1984 with the release of Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, a massive hit and enduring classic of contemporary holiday music. Since then, his Christmas catalog has grown to include thirteen records, containing some of Steamroller's biggest hits and holding the distinction of being some of the most requested Christmas music of all time. With more than 28 million albums sold in the US, Mannheim Steamroller will carry their musical enthusiasm with them throughout their 2014 shows.

It was enjoyable concert, I would go again. Nice Christmas event.
It is awesome! It was their 25th anniversary and it was my husband and my 25th wedding anniversary - They were incredible! The energy of the show was exciting, unforgettable and fun! What an awesome show and night!
Very good performance...just as expected. Sound quality good, but could be improved. Lighting very good, but smoke is distracting.
I love Mannheim Steamrollers music especially at Christmas time. I have been to three of their shows now and the one we saw in San Antonio a few years ago was the best. Chip Davis is missed from the current shows. There was not a lot of difference between this years show and last years show and a bit too much backfill of soundtracks was used-noticed occasionally that the music did not match the instruments on stage. I don't think we would have travelled again to see this show, but since it was in the town we live in, we went and did enjoy it. We had a couple friends with who had never been to one of their shows and they really enjoyed it.
Seemed like a very "tired" performance and Chip Davis was not in attendance. The US Cellular center is not a good venue. I saw the show about four years ago at the Mark in Davenport and it was much better. The performers seemed bored and did not interact with the audiance. The music was OK.
I would say it was great to see, and all of the music was great. The only thing I wish they'd change is the background screen they show with all of their songs. When they play the celtic music I was distracted by their strange choice or Renaissance video that it took away from the music. But all in all was a good show.
Music was wonderful, as expected, but the show was "cheesy". Need a fresh perspective to update and modernize the videos playing in the backgrond. Creativity would bring a whole new demension to the show.
My wife and I attended the 4:30 performance at Ferguson, and loved it! I had trouble sitting still through several of the pieces, and had a big grin on my face after the excellent encore. I feared they would have trouble reproducing their sound live, but now when I hear them on the radio I realize they sound even better live.
Hearing the Christmas music of Mannheim Steamroller's on the radio or on recordings is very enjoyable however experiencing the music live is absolutely superb. Their unique performance of the Christmas classics was extremely enjoyable. The excellent combination of traditional orchestra string and horn instruments with drums, an electric violin, synthesizers and a lute added an incredible amount to each and every song and makes their music, as stated, unique. The concert was interesting and very entertaining. The performance started exactly on time and was 1 hour and 55 minutes in length including a 15 minute intermission. Every minute was enjoyable, a superb performance and a very fulfilling evening, highly recommended.
This is always a show worth seeing! THe band is great and the grapics are amazing. I wish I could see them every week! And I like the fact that you 'meet and greet' them after the show.
Excellent in every way. Great way to kick of the Christmas season.
I had never been to a MS concert before tonight, and I was disappointed. Before the curtain opened, the MS version of "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" played, and I am convinced they just played the CD. It was clear that prerecorded music augmented every song. The video of Chip Davis and the "humor" among the musicians was forced and not funny. The guitarist had a smarmy stage presence. The orchestra should have been up on a platform. The videos behind the musicians were laughably dated. Handel is rolling over in his grave about what they did to his Hallelujah Chorus. And finally the cheesy white tuxes. For a nationwide tour, you'd think they could afford to hire a tailor to shorten the men's pants. And the men's shoes - one was wearing black, others wore white sneakers. Other than that......musically I did enjoy a number of the songs, especially Greensleeves.
First let me say, Mannheim Steamroller brought Christmas music back into my home. We love the music as only they can play it. That said, I believe at 55 years old, I was too YOUNG for their target audience. I would have enjoyed watching it more on TV with a volume control. The show had no punch, no WOW factor. The movie they projected on the screen behind them was bad and a distraction. Worse, this show cost me over $60 per ticket for three. The band had no stage presence, they looked bored; though not as bored as I was. In the past years my wife, daughter and I pick a show that we think will move us. The last two were Yani and then Bowfire; both outstanding shows. We believed these guys would surpass them both. I likened it to Lawrence Welk. Don't go you will be disappointed.
This was a fantastic performance. You could tell that the artists put a lot of heart and talent into it.
While the music is great, the entire performance is dated. It has a 1980's flair and the quality of the video (as well as the content) is very dated. The group is in desperate need of refreshing and moderning their performance. The Indep Event Center is easy to get into but it is a huge miss to have the rows so narrow with very little leg room. I am only 5' 3" but my knees were hitting the chair in front of me. Very uncomfortable.
When the concert was over, I could have easily sat through it again - it was fantastic. A great way to get in the Christmas spirit.
I would give Mannheim Steamroller : Christmas a 5 star "Amazing" rating. The concert was truly remarkable because I enjoyed the music while watching the musicians perform. I could tell they really did enjoyed performing the different Christmas songs, and they enjoyed playing as an ensemble. I have loved their music from the beginning, 25 years ago. This was the first time I watched them perform live, and I witnessed 25 years of Christmas joy.
Definitely worth seeing after years of enjoying their albums.
Mannheim Steamroller is a classic and always a precursor to Christmas. Their music is classic and always endearing. I saw them about 10 years ago at Kemper and the production was unforgettable, a set Christmas scene on the floor, snow at the end of the show, a real performance! I was disappointed with the lackluster performance at the Event Center. I paid a lot more for the tickets and felt like I recieved a lot less. They kept talking about the East Coast and West Coast tours and I felt like we got the leftover midwest tour. The seats and the haze at the Event Center were both uncomfortable. All that said, I still love the music of Mannheim and would still recommend them.
Have been a fan of Mannheim Steamroller since the 80's. What a tremendous treat to finally be able to see them live. Incredible how so few artists can make so much wonderful sound.
