MANNHEIM STEAMROLLER: CHRISTMAS IN CONCERT:

Mannheim Steamroller have been innovators of the neo-classical genre for over 40 years, blending the finest orchestral sections with electronic elements and a hint of rock to arrive at their remarkably unique sound. Not only are their live performances sonically robust, but they're visually stimulating as well, featuring an incredible light show and illustrations that dance across giant projection screens. Whether they're playing originals like "Catching Snowflakes on Your Tongue" or classics like "Joy to the World," Mannheim Steamroller will have fans in the holiday spirit this season on their 2014 Christmas tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Mannheim Steamroller is the alias of composer Chip Davis, who created the moniker from "Mannheim roller", a musical technique that was popular in Germany during the 1700s. Davis initially sought a record label to release his music, but the lack of interest led to the creation of his own label American Gramophone for his 1975 debut album Fresh Aire. He went on to release seven more albums in the Fresh Aire series, six of which were certified gold by the RIAA. His biggest success, however, came in 1984 with the release of Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, a massive hit and enduring classic of contemporary holiday music. Since then, his Christmas catalog has grown to include thirteen records, containing some of Steamroller's biggest hits and holding the distinction of being some of the most requested Christmas music of all time.  With more than 28 million albums sold in the US, Mannheim Steamroller will carry their musical enthusiasm with them throughout their 2014 shows.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"I loved the Christmas concert!! The music, the video, and the interaction with the audience is amazing! I would definitely go see them again!"

Wonderful music and a great way to welcome in the holiday season!

  • Mannheim Concert

by proftoo on 12/6/10US Cellular Center - Cedar RapidsRating: 4 out of 5

The music was great but a curtain hanging at the right side of the stage prevented people seated in the right side balconies from seeing some of the performers and blocked most of the videos. I can't believe that something like sight lines were over looked in setting up the stage for this otherwise superb event.

  • Mannheim Steamroller exceeded my expectations

by jcvord on 12/6/10Orpheum Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

I've been a fan of the music of Mannheim Steamroller since the winter of 1986 when my parents introduced me to their first Christmas album. I instantly fell in love with their unique interpretation of the many traditional Christmas pieces incorporated on that album. In the 24 years that have lapsed since, I have never made a point to go see them until now. I have seen their live Christmas DVD, and was impressed. I expected their concert to be about on par with that. However, seeing them live adds a whole new dimension to their music. Their calm, but passionate energy is very pleasant to watch. They truly enjoy what they do and that translates into a performance that even an individual unfamiliar with their work would appreciate. I was even a little pessimistic about seeing them without Chip Davis' direct involvement with the tour, but they pulled it off in world-class form without him. It's as though they captured his essence and unbottled it for the 2-hour show. I couldn't have been more satisfied. I recommend anyone interested in seeing a fantastic Christmas concert go see them. If you are fan of this legendary group and have never seen them in-person before, you must check them out for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

  • Needs an overhaul for visual aestetics

by tanstaafl on 12/6/10Orpheum Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 3 out of 5

The music was as beautiful as ever. But the lame video's in the background were distracting. Either do it well, or don't do it at all. Reminded me of a boring sales seminar held in a large hotel meeting room, with the powerpoint presentation on three different screens. I went to the Fresh Aire concert decades ago and was blown away with the singers, dancers, laser light show, etc. Of course a venue like the Orpheum does not allow such a spectacular "big" show, but this could have been done much better. Need a new production team, you wonderful musicians.

the music was what I expected but the background graphics were poor at best.

  • Mannheim, Perfect for Christmas Nostalgia

Loved the songs, video was a great add-on. Totally enjoyable performance and made me feel wonderful.

  • Mannheim Steamroller music is powerful

by bldyl on 12/6/10Orpheum Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 3 out of 5

Music and talent was unforgettable. But the background video was distracting. Would have preferred more lights and scenery and close-ups of performers. Did not like the Renaissance-type video and did not see the connection with Terry Redlin paintings. Just average for the price.

The music was excellent. I miss Chip Davis. The vidio was entertaining and fit the music.

  • Great as always

Wonderful show. Really enjoyed watching the group interact with one another as they played. Loved the music as always. Chip needs a better introduction.

  • Mannheim was great!

by mtdewgirl on 12/6/10Orpheum Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 4 out of 5

This was my second time seeing them & it was so much better seeing them at the Orpheum than it was at a bigger venue. I believe it was at the Excel Energy Center when we saw them last & that was too big, too loud. At the Orpheum, it was great!!!! I don't care as much for their music that is more 'renaissance' music. But, that's not a show stopper though either. All in all.........even though the roads were terrible & it took us almost 2 hours to get to the show. It was great!

  • The perfect way to start your holiday season!

If you missed this concert you missed something wonderful! I've never heard a group that sounded exactly like their CD! It was phenomenal! The visuals on the screen behind them added to the enjoyment.

What a way to kick off the holiday season! It was everything and more than we expected. Would highly recommend it and look forward to next year.

For the price I was disappointed, I thought the graphics would be better, it would be more of a "SHOW", don't get me wrong it was good, just not something I would ever do again.

Mannheim Steamroller puts on a great Christmas show. It really gets you in a holiday mood.

  • Mannheim, as always tremendous

by HatzMeow on 12/6/10Orpheum Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

I LOVE seeing Mannheim in person. The show is unforgettable and a wonderful kickoff to the holiday season. I liked going to the Orpheum, which is a beautiful old theater, but I think the show was better at the Xcel because there was a bigger expanse to display all the lights and the video screen. However, I would definitely go again, whatever the venue.

  • by biegdeal on 12/6/10Orpheum Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 3 out of 5

It is a concert to get you in the Holiday spirit. The concert celebrated the 25th season. But that may be the problem. 25 years, it is time to change the magic somehow.

  • Mannheim - Awesome

by CuznLeroy on 12/6/10Orpheum Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

Have seen mannheim several times, and it was great to have them back in the small venue. Sound at the Orpheum is much better than the large arenas as are the seats and view. Mannheim never disappoints and is amazing to watch. So much going on with so many different sounds - just awesome!

  • Great Event

by Timmde on 12/6/10Orpheum Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

This was an outstanding concert that I would reccommend to everyone. I would love to see them in a concert doing other than Christmas music,The Young lady on the violin was the best.

  • It was OK..........

    by Smileeeeee2 on 12/6/10Orpheum Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 3 out of 5

I saw my first Mannheim Steamroller performance in Ann Arbot MI in the 90's and Chip Davis was all over the stage. While I still enjoy the music, the animation and theatrics is gone. The musicians just stood there for the most part and the toy piano which used to descend from the ceiling was no where to be found - so sad...................
