MANNHEIM STEAMROLLER: CHRISTMAS IN CONCERT:

Mannheim Steamroller have been innovators of the neo-classical genre for over 40 years, blending the finest orchestral sections with electronic elements and a hint of rock to arrive at their remarkably unique sound. Not only are their live performances sonically robust, but they're visually stimulating as well, featuring an incredible light show and illustrations that dance across giant projection screens. Whether they're playing originals like "Catching Snowflakes on Your Tongue" or classics like "Joy to the World," Mannheim Steamroller will have fans in the holiday spirit this season on their 2014 Christmas tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Mannheim Steamroller is the alias of composer Chip Davis, who created the moniker from "Mannheim roller", a musical technique that was popular in Germany during the 1700s. Davis initially sought a record label to release his music, but the lack of interest led to the creation of his own label American Gramophone for his 1975 debut album Fresh Aire. He went on to release seven more albums in the Fresh Aire series, six of which were certified gold by the RIAA. His biggest success, however, came in 1984 with the release of Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, a massive hit and enduring classic of contemporary holiday music. Since then, his Christmas catalog has grown to include thirteen records, containing some of Steamroller's biggest hits and holding the distinction of being some of the most requested Christmas music of all time.  With more than 28 million albums sold in the US, Mannheim Steamroller will carry their musical enthusiasm with them throughout their 2014 shows.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"The band delivered from start to finish. What a wonderful way to get in the holiday spirit! Their musicianship is top notch and their performance is very entertaining."

"Great concert with remarkable renditions of Christmas music. They are a very professional ensemble that made the event enjoyable and memorable."

"I loved the Christmas concert!! The music, the video, and the interaction with the audience is amazing! I would definitely go see them again!"

  • Manheim Steamroller was great!

    by Pins05 on 12/6/10Orpheum Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 4 out of 5

My wife saw a larger version of Manheim Steamrollers Christmas almost 10 year ago, and she has always loved the music. We both really enjoyed the playful parts that the performers had with each other. It showed how much they really do enjoy what they do.

  • Mannheim Steamroller (marketing) Christmas

by AlZheimer on 12/6/10Orpheum Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 2 out of 5

This was good for kids who've never been to "a concert." Sound was good. Some very pretty sonic colors. Watching their CD covers on a giant slideshow while the group was live on-stage was a cheesy gambit. Even my 10 year old noticed it was marketing. C'mon man!

The entire program was wonderful. I would attend it again next year if in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

  • Good Christmas concert

I really enjoyed my first live Mannheim Steamroller experience! Although everything was a little over priced and the seats were terrible the music was still worth hearing. Also I purchased the seats as "best available" but seeing the many empty seats in other areas these were definitely not the "best available". There was a large curtain and lights in the way of the screen which they were playing video on.

  • mannheim was awesome

by jandpb on 12/6/10US Cellular Center - Cedar RapidsRating: 5 out of 5

The Mannheim Steamroller concert that I attended recently was truly awesome. It was very professionally done and if one's eyes closed, it was identical to listening to the same song on their CD's. Very good way to spend an evening and the money.

  • Mannheim was fabulous/festive!!

Visual effects were outdated and need some updating. The music was great but the number of slow songs made many people "sleepy or bored"

  • Disappointed

by SensualRobert on 12/6/10US Cellular Center - Cedar RapidsRating: 2 out of 5

Frankly, I felt a bit "let down" from this concert. This is the first time I've been able to see one of my all-time favorite groups in person, and I was psyched for it. But after finding out at the beginning of the concert that there would be no Chip Davis in person there, and then realizing that the musicians (as excellent as they were) are playing along with pre-recorded tracks, I was disappointed. I was also a bit more disappointed when the lead pianist let the audience know that there are actually "two" groups of musicans that go around the country playing Mannheim Steamroller music. For $70.00 tickets, I expected better. The music was good of course. However, I felt the musicians lacked a certain "polish" to their performances, sometimes ending a bit early or late, to the pre-recorded music. Of course, for me, nothing will ever take away the beauty and reverence of Mannheim's Silent Night. I've probably listened to it 200 times since it came out, and I still listen to it with the CD player's "repeat" turned on. I found the encore to be both satisfying (as that's when I got to hear my Silent Night) and a bit irritating ... as during their last piece, the video going on behind the musicians seems like a egotistic commercial for MS, showing their past performances and received kudos on many well known TV shows. Those of us at the concert know how much we love the music ... so why ruin a Christmas concert with self-indulgent kudos from 20 years back or more? All in all, if I were grading the concert, I'd have to give it a "C" at best.

First half of concert seemed mechanical and lack-luster compared to other Mannheim Steamroller concerts I have seen. Second half was alive and very vibrant. Excellent concert.,

  • Mannheim Steamroller needs to freshen up show

    by MrsGriswold2010 on 12/6/10Orpheum Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 2 out of 5

I've always loved their music, but their stage show is totally lacking in inspiration and creativity. Very "dated" performance - right down to the performers costumes (how many polyesters had to give their lives for those outfits?) and hairstyles - felt like I was back in the 80's when most of the set songs were recorded. Old music videos of their songs running in the background onstage just added to the dated feeling. The videos were very distracting, also - maybe to try to cover for nothing much else happening on the stage? "Light" show and fog machines were very "1985" - overall a disappointment to us and the friends we had invited along. Sorry to be so negative, but it was really a dud.

This was a wonderful concert. Not only was the music just what I wanted to hear but enjoyed the video background.

  • Steamrolling symphony of sights and sounds

by Enegue on 12/6/10Orpheum Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

Mannheim Steamroller Christmas concert was fabulous. I hadn't been to one for twenty years! I was amazed again and thrilled at their music as well as the accompanying light show and videos. I loved the whole night, especially the mix of various instruments and the moving interpretations of traditional Christmas music. Hats off to Chip and the whole band!

  • Mannheim continues to Steamroll

by Norkorska on 12/6/10Orpheum Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

I first saw Mannheim 21 years ago at the Orpheum. I was very glad to see Jackson Berkey and his wife still performing. The three younger newer Steamrollers (Violin, recorders/percussion, and drums/percussion) are all oustanding, impeccable musicians. The group is top notch and the sound is excellent. The arrangements remain fresh and inspiring. It was an oustanding concert.

  • Manheim Steamroller no surprise

by flipmorrison on 12/6/10Orpheum Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 4 out of 5

No surprises here. If you like the records, you will like the show. Niggles: The electric bass was often mixed too high. The movies running behind the stage were sometimes inscrutable.

  • Mannheim steamrolled us!!

Excellent show. Very vibrant and uplifting! Beautiful on screen show!

I have always wanted to go to the Mannheim Steamroller concert for years, and I finally made time to go, and was able to bring my 12 year old son. If they are in town again, we are definitely going!

  • Mannheim Steamroller - The Best!

    by Dillon69 on 12/6/10Orpheum Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

Two solid hours and three standing ovations. They are still going strong. Wonderful concert.

  • Fun show

by Laserbait on 12/6/10Orpheum Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 3 out of 5

I have been to 3 of Mannheim Steamrollers concerts now, 2 in the early 90's and now in 2010. The show has been scaled down from what I remember, and I missed seeing Chip Davis at the wheel. Still entertaining and humorous, but lacked the splendor of the old shows. There was only one really downpoint to the show, and that was a couple of blown speakers on my side of the stage that buzzed and rattled throughout the performance. It probably wasn't that noticeable to 80% of the audience, but being a retired sound tech, I would have been embarrassed to not have caught that in the sound check. I am also sure that the Steamroller Artists would not be happy if they knew that they didn't sound their absolute best to their fans.

  • Fabulous Concert!

We loved the Mannheim Steamroller Christmas concert! The music was terrific, and the slides, lighting, dry ice, etc., all added to a terrific production.
