MANNHEIM STEAMROLLER: CHRISTMAS IN CONCERT:

Mannheim Steamroller have been innovators of the neo-classical genre for over 40 years, blending the finest orchestral sections with electronic elements and a hint of rock to arrive at their remarkably unique sound. Not only are their live performances sonically robust, but they're visually stimulating as well, featuring an incredible light show and illustrations that dance across giant projection screens. Whether they're playing originals like "Catching Snowflakes on Your Tongue" or classics like "Joy to the World," Mannheim Steamroller will have fans in the holiday spirit this season on their 2014 Christmas tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Mannheim Steamroller is the alias of composer Chip Davis, who created the moniker from "Mannheim roller", a musical technique that was popular in Germany during the 1700s. Davis initially sought a record label to release his music, but the lack of interest led to the creation of his own label American Gramophone for his 1975 debut album Fresh Aire. He went on to release seven more albums in the Fresh Aire series, six of which were certified gold by the RIAA. His biggest success, however, came in 1984 with the release of Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, a massive hit and enduring classic of contemporary holiday music. Since then, his Christmas catalog has grown to include thirteen records, containing some of Steamroller's biggest hits and holding the distinction of being some of the most requested Christmas music of all time.  With more than 28 million albums sold in the US, Mannheim Steamroller will carry their musical enthusiasm with them throughout their 2014 shows.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"The band delivered from start to finish. What a wonderful way to get in the holiday spirit! Their musicianship is top notch and their performance is very entertaining."

"Great concert with remarkable renditions of Christmas music. They are a very professional ensemble that made the event enjoyable and memorable."

"I loved the Christmas concert!! The music, the video, and the interaction with the audience is amazing! I would definitely go see them again!"

I could have listened to the Mannheim Steamrollers all night long and not have gotten tired of the music. It is fun to see how all of the sound come alive with the artists. It is also amazing how it all sound and fun to watch them, they look like they are having fun playing in the band. This was not my first concert and hopefully not my last. I would go every year if they want to come and play.

  • Mannheim was not exciting

by akwoitas on 12/6/10Orpheum Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 1 out of 5

I have wanted to see Mannheim Steamroller for years and I finally in my 20's, I went for the first time, and it was terrible! I thought the overall concert was very boring and the whole time i was there i was counting down the songs until we could leave. I have seen Trans Siberian Orchestra live in concert before and i suppose i assumed Mannheim would have performed somewhat like them, boy was i wrong. At TSO, there was a fantastic light show with energetic performers. All you did at Mannheim was watch them play their instrument and watch the different covers of their cd's flash behind you on a large screen, not to mention there was NO Christmas decor whatsoever! I was extremely disappointed and i do have to say that this has ultimately been the worst concert i have been to.

  • Mannheim puts you in the Christmas spirit!

This is the third time I have seen Mannheim (the second since the two tours started). I still enjoy this concert - I intend to be back the next time they are in town! A great holiday show.

  • If You Have Seen the Old Steamroller group Preform

by steamrollerdisappointment on 12/6/10US Cellular Center - Cedar RapidsRating: 2 out of 5

We were not impressed at all with this concert. With the group broken up into 2 seperate touring groups, and add the fact that Chip does not tour with either anymore, it was a disappointment. We base these comments because we have seen the original MS group with Chip preform 4 different times over the past 15 years. As for the setup in the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, IA it was poor. Sound system wasn't the best, and the acustics in that facility were very poor. And several hundred ticket holders couldn't even see the whole stage on the right side, since a curtain that hung in front of the stage that was pulled over to the right side, which blocked the view of several hundred paying "fans" since the track for the curtian was to short.

  • Entertaining

by soundmaker on 12/6/10US Cellular Center - Cedar RapidsRating: 4 out of 5

The concert was pretty cool. It has helped put me in the Christmas Spirit. There was one unsatisfactory aspect of the concert. The curtain they used was a pull to the side which blocked the view of many people off to the right of the stage. The concert would have been more enjoyable and I more than likely would have given a five star if I would have been able to have a full view of the stage and screen.

Mannheim Steamroller was great, especially the second half. Don't get floor seats at this venue (US Cellular Center-Cedar Rapids) since the seats are so close, your neighbor will most likely be sharing your seat with you

  • Mannheim Steamroller, a Christmas Tradition!!!

by grandmother1201 on 12/6/10US Cellular Center - Cedar RapidsRating: 5 out of 5

I have loved their recordings for years and had always wanted to hear them live. I was not disappointed. They sounded as great as their CDs, something you can't say for all concerts. The back round visuals were wonderful.

  • Mannheim is ALWAY awesome!

No better way to start off the Christmas holiday. I lost my Mom last year on the date of the preformance. Have had a hard time getting into CHristmas this year...THis REALLy helped!!!! Was disappoint the Chip wasn't preforming, but the "new guy" was awesome, too! Highly recommended!!!!!!

by MusikisLife on 12/6/10US Cellular Center - Cedar RapidsRating: 4 out of 5

I thought the music was amazing! It could have been louder for me. We were high up and the volume could have been better. I wanted to "feel" the music. I was a little disappointed with the set. I was expected it decorated for Christmas with lots of glitz or Christmas trees and lights.

  • Mannheim Steamroller has seen better times

by uptowngirlfromthefarm on 12/6/10Orpheum Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 2 out of 5

The musicians were obviously extremely talented and great performers.... the problem is not the musicians.... the production itself is tired and not of the caliber I have come to expect at the Orpheum.... Chip Davis, being unable to travel with the tour, inserts himself into the performance via a taped message... he tries to be funny and comes off as uneducated and self-absorbed... When they first started performing 25 years ago, I was living on the family farm and this sort of approach would have been well-received and accepted... not today! ...and then there were the "videos" shown on the screens behind the performers... looked like someone was recording their little christmas village display... the rest of the videos were just as bad.... I just didn't get it... Bottom line: the live performance has seen better days and I cannot recommend attending... if you like their music, buy their CDs... don't waste the money on seeing them live...

It was very entertaining and what you would expect from Mannheim Steamroller. Not sure if I would go again, but it was a great one-time experience.

I really enjoyed the show I had never seen them before. I really loved it.

  • Mannheim Steamroller was AWESOME!

by PRRFan on 12/6/10US Cellular Center - Cedar RapidsRating: 5 out of 5

My wife and I have been fans of Mannheim Steamroller for along time. We have multiple albums and videos. This was our first live concert with them. Then music was awesome as was the special effects and costumes. Mannheim Steamroller is a must see for everyone. We definitely intend to see them again.

  • Got me in the Christmas Spirit

by slhall on 12/6/10Orpheum Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 4 out of 5

It was interesting to see all the different instruments they used. I'm not a huge fan of music in general, but this wasn't bad.

  • Mannheim Maybe

by redbeer on 12/6/10Orpheum Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 3 out of 5

Yes I did enjoy the concert. But I wasn't as good I thought it would be. We have several CDs but I though it would be more energized. Some of the videos were strange and I didn't think worked with the music. The renaissance scences worked with the music but not the other ones.

  • Mannheim was the best

Very good show-performers looked like they enjoyed playing as much as we enjoyed watching

This is the fourth time I've seen Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas concert (MSCC), and unfortunately, the worst of the four. When people think of Mannheim Steamroller, they think of Mr. Steamroller himself, Chip Davis. Where was Chip? He showed up on the big screen for a few moments, but he wasn't there playing along with the usual group. That was a big disappointment for me. Also, for some reason, it was decided to hang a curtain in front of the stage that moved from left to right. Not up......just left to right. Then, when it was as far right as possible, it was tied up in place. This proved to be bad for all the paying ticketholders sitting off to the right of the stage. The curtain obscured much of the view of the film being shown on the big screen. Although the music was as good as always, the setting hampered the whole experience. My wife and I have decided that we have seen the best of the MSCC's and will probably not attend another one. The best one we saw was 7 or 8 years ago at the Mark in Moline, IL.

  • Mannheim Christmas was awesome.

If you love their CDs, you'll love the concert. They played all the favorites and then some. They also had nice presentations with lights and videos playing in the background. Very entertaining to watch and listen.
