MANNHEIM STEAMROLLER: CHRISTMAS IN CONCERT:

Mannheim Steamroller have been innovators of the neo-classical genre for over 40 years, blending the finest orchestral sections with electronic elements and a hint of rock to arrive at their remarkably unique sound. Not only are their live performances sonically robust, but they're visually stimulating as well, featuring an incredible light show and illustrations that dance across giant projection screens. Whether they're playing originals like "Catching Snowflakes on Your Tongue" or classics like "Joy to the World," Mannheim Steamroller will have fans in the holiday spirit this season on their 2014 Christmas tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Mannheim Steamroller is the alias of composer Chip Davis, who created the moniker from "Mannheim roller", a musical technique that was popular in Germany during the 1700s. Davis initially sought a record label to release his music, but the lack of interest led to the creation of his own label American Gramophone for his 1975 debut album Fresh Aire. He went on to release seven more albums in the Fresh Aire series, six of which were certified gold by the RIAA. His biggest success, however, came in 1984 with the release of Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, a massive hit and enduring classic of contemporary holiday music. Since then, his Christmas catalog has grown to include thirteen records, containing some of Steamroller's biggest hits and holding the distinction of being some of the most requested Christmas music of all time.  With more than 28 million albums sold in the US, Mannheim Steamroller will carry their musical enthusiasm with them throughout their 2014 shows.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"I loved the Christmas concert!! The music, the video, and the interaction with the audience is amazing! I would definitely go see them again!"

  • Perfect Start to the Season

by Monte on 11/20/24Mystic Lake Casino Hotel - Prior LakeRating: 5 out of 5

This was our first, and certainly not last, visit to a performance by Mannheim Steamroller. The orchestral arrangements were stellar. The featured musicians were talented, each in their own right. The location of the venue was great and provided excellent view of the stage with spot on audio. Keeping the performance with no intermission was also a good choice. Overall, I would recommend the Mannheim Steamroller Christmas show. The visuals used behind the orchestra would be my only negative needing improvement. The scenery videos were decent but the Nutcracker (toys coming to life) segment, for example, seemed dated. This visual aspect of the performance needs a major overhaul to remain current.

  • Great Show

by BryanA on 11/20/24Mystic Lake Casino Hotel - Prior LakeRating: 5 out of 5

After hearing their music for years, we finally made it to a live show and it didn't disappoint. The music and special effects were fantastic, the venue was great we loved it all. We'll definitely go again next year.

  • Enjoyable

by KZ on 11/20/24Montgomery Performing Arts Centre - MontgomeryRating: 4 out of 5

We enjoyed the concert but the one we saw in Tampa years ago was much better. This one lacked the brass to punch up the sound. Nice sounds from wind player( she played numerous instruments!) but the group lacked fullness of sound you expected from Mannheim Steamroller.

  • As always, stupendous!

by BigFan on 11/20/24Montgomery Performing Arts Centre - MontgomeryRating: 5 out of 5

I've been to several, several MSR concerts, and as always very enjoyable and well done. I only have one comment that was distracting and that was the lighting. When they flashed lights into the audience that really bothered me. Overall, the lighting was well done, maybe a little much at times, but that's show biz. Keep up the good work and lovely music. The venue was easily navigated and the seating was comfortable.

  • Jubilant Christmas Experience!

by Chris on 11/20/24Montgomery Performing Arts Centre - MontgomeryRating: 5 out of 5

Totally got my husband and me in the Christmas spirit! 15 musicians on stage displaying their extraordinary talents. Looked forward to seeing the originator of the magical arrangements of Christmas carols, but Chip Davis does not travel with tours. Lighting and special effects were great and encore of Silent Night was totally sublime. Highly recommend!!

  • First time attendee and it was wonderful

by Sherry on 11/20/24Mystic Lake Casino Hotel - Prior LakeRating: 5 out of 5

We were first time attendees at a Mannheim Steamroller concert and we were not quite sure what to expect. It was great and we plan to attend more of their concerts in the future. No issue with the concert itself but it was distracting to have so many people to arrive late and leave and come back to their seats during the concert. In the future, I will likely buy tickets a few rows higher up to avoid that distraction. It is not really something that Mystic can control but, due to our seating location, it was distracting. We have attended a number of concerts at Mystic and this was the first time we have had that distraction.

  • As good as expected!

  • Not what expecyed

by Judi on 11/20/24Montgomery Performing Arts Centre - MontgomeryRating: 2 out of 5

We expected a Christmas program which would give us the Christmas spirit. There were no singers which was disappointing too. Very few of the pieces completed a song familiar to the audience. The musicians were talented but the arrangements were disappointing.

Outstanding. Best way to begin the Christmas Season.

  • Fantastic Concert

by Cooky on 11/19/24The St. Augustine Amphitheatre - St AugustineRating: 5 out of 5

The "Green Team"put on a fantastic concert, with many favorites from the holidays and from their Fresh Aire series. Having now checked off another "Bucket List"event, I can only say I was beyond pleased and thrilled with the light show elements, but most of all, the musicians wowed everyone in the theater. I'll be looking forward to the next opportunity to see them again!!

  • Enjoyable

by Daddio7 on 11/19/24The St. Augustine Amphitheatre - St AugustineRating: 5 out of 5

A calm but appreciative crowd, unlike the more rowdy rock and roll concert goers. The group included a small live orchestra and played our favorite songs with the full sound of a live performance. The sound technician had the volume at a comfortable level.

  • Great concert but uncomfortable venue accommodations

by PJ on 11/19/24The St. Augustine Amphitheatre - St AugustineRating: 4 out of 5

We really enjoyed the Manheim Steamroller concert at the St. Augustine Amphitheater. Concert was great. Amphitheater not so great. Small unportable seats with no covering over our head. If it became a stormy night we'd be soaked. Also stair lighting was pathetic for moving around at night. Bus shuttle took over 90minutes to get us back to the parking lot in the State Park which was also completely dark.

  • A lovely evening

A lovely evening, the music and presentation were fantastic. Nice way to kick off the Christmas season. Would highly recommend.

  • Awsome concert

by Tiger on 11/19/24The St. Augustine Amphitheatre - St AugustineRating: 5 out of 5

Fantastic music with a motion picture back drop featuring wonderful visual effects. Old England castles and period costumes compliment the heart pounding original version of Christmas classic songs.

  • Mesmerizing

So unique every one in the band is very talented. A definite see to get you in the holiday spirit!

  • Wonderful Concert

by Taz on 11/19/24The St. Augustine Amphitheatre - St AugustineRating: 5 out of 5

The Concert was just wonderful. it was a wonderful night and the Venue was nice. There were a few minor issues. But in the grand scheme of things it was a lovely evening. For folks in the future if you can snag the premium onsite parking grab it and don't rely on the shuttles. We used the shuttle from the park and there was plenty of parking once you got there. Getting there was not very well advertised and the amount of shuttles that were in service could almost guarantee you were going to be late getting to your seat. The shuttle issue really stood out at the end of the concert since it took well over a hour to a 90 minutes to get back to the car. I don't thing they had many shuttles running. I would be surprised if there were more than 6 to 8 shuttle vans running. even the security staff appeard to be a bit concerned about how long it was taking for folks to exite the venue. As for the seating of the venue the seats were comfy enough and there really wasn't a bad seat in the house for the concert it self. Now the background screen effects and that part of the show using that background picture screen, now that is a differant matter. On both sides of the stage hanging down from the scaffoding were the house speakers these impeded seeing the full screen at the back of the stage and unless you were directly in center stage seating, they were going to block your view of that added part of the performance. Was that a deal breaker for the performance of the show, by no means no. The concerrt as I said was fantastic and I would come to see it again but would look for seats that would not be obstructed by stage material. As a side note these speakers looked they could have been place on the extreme edges of the stage and then no one in the audience would have be even noticed the speakers as they would have just blended in the walls of the stage. Thanks and I hope this helps for future concert goers.
