MANNHEIM STEAMROLLER: CHRISTMAS IN CONCERT:

Mannheim Steamroller have been innovators of the neo-classical genre for over 40 years, blending the finest orchestral sections with electronic elements and a hint of rock to arrive at their remarkably unique sound. Not only are their live performances sonically robust, but they're visually stimulating as well, featuring an incredible light show and illustrations that dance across giant projection screens. Whether they're playing originals like "Catching Snowflakes on Your Tongue" or classics like "Joy to the World," Mannheim Steamroller will have fans in the holiday spirit this season on their 2014 Christmas tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Mannheim Steamroller is the alias of composer Chip Davis, who created the moniker from "Mannheim roller", a musical technique that was popular in Germany during the 1700s. Davis initially sought a record label to release his music, but the lack of interest led to the creation of his own label American Gramophone for his 1975 debut album Fresh Aire. He went on to release seven more albums in the Fresh Aire series, six of which were certified gold by the RIAA. His biggest success, however, came in 1984 with the release of Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, a massive hit and enduring classic of contemporary holiday music. Since then, his Christmas catalog has grown to include thirteen records, containing some of Steamroller's biggest hits and holding the distinction of being some of the most requested Christmas music of all time.  With more than 28 million albums sold in the US, Mannheim Steamroller will carry their musical enthusiasm with them throughout their 2014 shows.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"I loved the Christmas concert!! The music, the video, and the interaction with the audience is amazing! I would definitely go see them again!"

  • Fantastic Mannheim Steamroller

by May on 12/10/24The Theater at MGM National Harbor - National HarborRating: 5 out of 5

This concert was absolutely great. I love the way they show videos behind the orchestra as they’re playing.

  • Needs an update

by Sue on 12/10/24The Theater at MGM National Harbor - National HarborRating: 2 out of 5

The music could have been enjoyed in The comfort of my own home. The video portion was so dated. We would have left after the first song but… We and MANY others departed at intermission. I bet it was obvious so maybe they’ll take the hint. They need to update the “show”. Not worth the trouble of going to MGM.

  • 4th timr concert

The sound was not at high enough level to clearly hear and feel all of the instruments

Enjoyable Christmas Holiday concert by Mannheim Steamroller…. Nice venue with comfortable seating (MGM Theatre at National Harbor).

  • Mannheim Steamroller

by Personal Account on 12/10/24The Theater at MGM National Harbor - National HarborRating: 3 out of 5

It was OK. I had never seen them before and always wanted to. I felt like it was very laid back, not very upbeat. There were a few songs mixed in that had nothing to do with the holidays. Overall though, they are a group of very talented musicians. I think my issue was that I was thinking they were more like TSO, so it wasn't fair that I compared.

  • Never Disappoints!!!

by Nanashopper on 12/6/24Broome County Forum Theatre - BinghamtonRating: 5 out of 5

Mannheim Steamroller is just magnificent- the talent, showmanship, visual effects- all outstanding! I will see their show every chance I get!!

  • AWESOME

by CG on 12/6/24Broome County Forum Theatre - BinghamtonRating: 5 out of 5

This was one of the best shows I've seen. The whole orchestra was amazing and the songs were absolutely beautiful. I've listened to Manheim for many years with my CD's but to experience them in person was beyond words. If you have a chance to go see them, then please do so. You will not regret it. I hope they come around next year as well.

  • Spectacular

by Ange on 12/6/24The Santander Performing Arts Center - ReadingRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first time attending one of these concerts. It did not disappoint. I have had friends who have told me that this is something you need to see at least once in your lifetime and I’m really glad that I bought these tickets and went. It was truly an amazing show. The music was so rich and touched my soul. The accompaniment of video and the light show with the songs just made it that much more special. I’m pretty sure I will be going back again next year.

  • Christmas magic

by Boi on 12/6/24Broome County Forum Theatre - BinghamtonRating: 4 out of 5

From the opening chords to the encore demanded by the audience, this performance was thoroughly enjoyable and appreciated

  • Not Good At All

by Tilly on 12/6/24Broome County Forum Theatre - BinghamtonRating: 2 out of 5

Some of the music was ok. A very muted performance and not at all like the music we are used to by MSR. The videos in the background can only be described as bizarre and not matching the music or theme of Christmas. Talking lips, a Buddha, dolphins and seagulls, computer graphics. It was very expensive and a huge disappointment.

  • Disappointing

by TB on 12/5/24Chrysler Hall - NorfolkRating: 1 out of 5

Attending a Christmas concert is usually a heartwarming experience, filled with festive music and visuals that evoke the joy of the season. Unfortunately, this particular event left much to be desired, with a number of missteps that overshadowed the holiday spirit. First and foremost, the sound quality was disappointing, especially for an event billed as a premium experience. The audio was unbalanced, with a noticeable lack of clarity in the higher ranges and an overbearing bass that muddled the music. For a professional concert, this was a glaring issue that detracted from the enjoyment of the performance. Adding to the frustration were the background visuals, which felt bizarrely disconnected from the theme. The videos appeared dated, with grainy quality and jarring, nonsensical imagery that seemed more suited for an experimental art exhibit than a Christmas celebration. The visuals felt like an afterthought, lacking cohesion and failing to enhance the concert’s atmosphere. As for the music, the choice of a high-energy techno style was puzzling for a Christmas concert. While the performers were clearly skilled, the pulsating beats and electronic melodies clashed with traditional expectations of festive cheer. Instead of inspiring a sense of warmth and nostalgia, the music felt alienating, making it difficult to connect emotionally with the holiday theme. Overall, the concert missed the mark on multiple fronts. With subpar sound, baffling visuals, and a musical style that felt out of place, it failed to deliver the premium experience promised. A Christmas concert should bring people together in the spirit of the season, but this event left many attendees scratching their heads and wishing for a more cohesive and festive production.

  • Didn’t feel like a Christmas/Holiday's Show

by Sadly Disappointed on 12/5/24The St. Augustine Amphitheatre - St AugustineRating: 1 out of 5

The poorest lighting, nearly nonexistent, showed a really low quality B grade video behind the musicians. Have always enjoyed Mannheim Steamroller music, however even that seemed off. Venue could have projected some colored lights to the sides of the stage but even that was utterly non nonexistent. Could have stayed home and streamed Alexa and watched the Christmas tree blinking lights and had an equivalent experience. Left at intermission, thoroughly disappointed.

  • Great performance

by PGM on 12/5/24Chrysler Hall - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed The Mannheim Steamroller Christmas program. Great way to kick off the Christmas season. Considering taking Grandkids to a future performance.

  • Fantastic

by Linda on 12/5/24Chrysler Hall - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

As always, this musical group does not disappoint. The concert was fantastic and a great way to kick off the holiday season for my family and me. I have only one complaint - the lights used to enhance the experience shone in my eyes and was painful at times. Kinda like meeting a car at night with their bright headlights on. I have been to several Manheim Steamroller concerts but this was the first one I attended that used light beams. This is group is so fantastic they don't need a gimmick. Get rid of the lights!

  • Awesome show, but the venue……

by Nana on 12/5/24Chrysler Hall - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

The concert by Mannheim Steamroller was fantastic! The music is always great, with the lights and videos behind the Orchestra to go along with the music made it even better! The Venue however, not so thrilled with that. It’s hard to find, even with GPS, parking was a mess, and the seating is confusing. It was dark outside, so that may have made a difference it trying to find the Venue, but there are no signs around on the streets or on the building. My tickets were for lower box B, but the door I had to enter into the hall through door D? Confusing!

  • Up beat nostalgia

by Mary on 12/4/24The Santander Performing Arts Center - ReadingRating: 4 out of 5

They are excellent musicians. The musical arrangements are up beat. Lots of nostalgia in the visual images. Lots of families attended. I recommend.

  • Great Show - Want to see every year!

by Penny B on 12/4/24The Santander Performing Arts Center - ReadingRating: 5 out of 5

The show was great! The musicians were high energy and played wonderfully. The videos playing on the screen above were a little nostalgic for those Manheim Steamroller fans who go way back. It didn't add anything for me, but it also didn't detract. I would love them to come to our town every year.

  • Amazing time!

by Jeannette & John on 12/4/24The Santander Performing Arts Center - ReadingRating: 5 out of 5

Mannheim Steamroller is truly an amazing and talented group of performers and the Reading concert did not disappoint. All the musicians were outstanding, but for my husband the drummer stole the show! Two…two encores! It was well worth the investment to be there! If you have an opportunity to go, you will come away enriched by their music!

  • Excellent Christmas Show

by TG on 12/4/24The Santander Performing Arts Center - ReadingRating: 5 out of 5

The concert had excellent sound quality and put me in the Christmas spirit already.

  • Mannheim Steamroller Christmas

by Rick and Alice on 12/4/24The Santander Performing Arts Center - ReadingRating: 3 out of 5

The music was beautifully arranged and certainly captured the joy and beauty of the season. A large screen behind the orchestra allowed videos to play during the concert but many of the videos were repetitive scenes of birds flying or dolphins swimming. Overall, the videos were old and often meaningless, distracting rather than enhancing the music. We would recommend the videos be professionally updated as they are a large part of this concert's experience. We also thought audience participation at some part of the show might be added such as one song (perhaps as the encore) where words to a traditional Christmas song are projected and the audience can sing along.
