About

About Made in America Festival

There's only one Jay-Z, the self-made billionaire who channeled an impoverished life of crime into a prolific hip-hop career — and ultimately one of the most impressive and improbable personal fortunes in the entire world. There's also only one Made in America Festival, the annual genre-spanning musical extravaganza curated by Jay-Z himself and produced by Live Nation.

Jay founded Made in America in 2012, and it's taken over Philadelphia's Benjamin Franklin Parkway every year since (with a concurrent appearance in Los Angeles in 2014). His purpose, as Jay explained in Ron Howard's 2013 documentary about the festival, is to unite the people of America under the banner of our shared musical culture. "It's a bigger idea than just a concert," Jay said. "We all have the same struggles, the same dreams."

When it comes to scoring the talent for each year's festival, it helps that Jay-Z has perhaps the deepest Rolodex in all of pop culture. He and his wife Beyonce have both performed in past years, of course, as have blockbuster artists like The National, Pearl Jam, Rihanna, Run-DMC, Bassnectar, Kanye West, and Coldplay.

Made in America 2018 featured the fest's most robust incarnation yet, spanning two days in Philadelphia and headlined by Nicki Minaj, Post Malone, Kendrick Lamar, Janelle Monae, and Miguel. With that kind of star power serving as the festival standard, 2019 promises another world-class lineup, returning to Ben Franklin Parkway August 31 and September 1.

The 2019 festival again will host Cause Village, a public area where 50-plus charitable organizations come together as a hub for social action. The festival also will have the midway rides and games, art installations, and mega-budget stage and light production that make Made in America the most unique and spectacular festival experience in the country.

    CHAINSMOKERS!!!

by johnsmithy321 on 9/7/17Ben Franklin Parkway - Philadelphia

Overall the experience was unforgettable but the rain Saturday made it cold, wet, and muddy (but neither you or I could change that). I enjoyed all the concerts I went too and felt like there was a good mix of everything, and if you didn't like any artist playing at the time there was plenty of things to do to supplement like food trucks, rides. and vendor tents.

    Fantastic Festival

by Natedaboss on 9/7/17Ben Franklin Parkway - Philadelphia

Jay Z and the Chainsmokers were worth the price of admission alone. Not even the rain Saturday could ruin the fun. The crowd was electric. All of the performers bought it.

So many great artsists for 2 days of fun

by homie12345 on 9/6/17Ben Franklin Parkway - Philadelphia

I loved how I could see a ton of my favorite artists in one place over the course of 2 days. It was a great weekend all together, but the rain was annoying.

    Important

by PhillyFestivalguy on 9/6/17Ben Franklin Parkway - Philadelphia

Do not get me wrong, Made in America is a eventful weekend filled with a lot to do. There is one thing to keep in mind though. If you are out of high school I do not recommend going to this festival at all. I went last year heading into my Senior year of high school and had a blast but this year me being in my first year out of high school not such a great time. It is frankly such an awful experience if you are 18 and over. I would highly recommend next time on the advertising put 17 and under only.

They should allow a sitting area where ticket holders can sit . The event was nice but it was no where to sit which made it really bad and tiring.

    Mixed Emotions

by Roz2ya on 9/6/17Ben Franklin Parkway - Philadelphia

The artist list was amazing. You can't go wrong with Jay Z, J Cole, Solange, Little Dragon, Cardi B, Jorja Smith etc......but this is probably not the move for the 40+ crowd to attend with college students. They were very rude and extremely busy bodies, cutting in front of you 100% of the time, loud, drunk and just not respectful of the space. I did meet a few youngsters that were very nice (not all were obnoxious) but the constant traveling in groups of 5 holding hands and trampling on our feet was overwhelming. It rained the first day so that was bad enough. I often wish I had a VIP pass so I could just chill with my husband and watch the amazing curated music. The food was terrible and expensive as well as the adult beverages. I traveled a long way and had a 2 out of 10 experience. The venue was very nice and a perfect place, just the crowd and the weather spoiled it for me.

    What a horribly run festival

by PrincessJayAye on 9/6/17Ben Franklin Parkway - Philadelphia

The bathrooms were disgusting. It was raining so it was a little hectic but there were tons of underage kids drinking and getting plastered. It was so dirty everywhere. I would NOT go again.

    Lineup was fire!

by Kali92 on 9/6/17Ben Franklin Parkway - Philadelphia

My first MIA , and unfortunetly it rained but J Cole and Jay Z were AMAZING! So it deff made it up for it. The line up for 2017 was amazing! I ordered my tickets a week before the event and i payed the 2 day shipping, and a few days before leaving to Philly i had to contact Front Gate tickets to be able to receive a tracking number, i feel like this should have happened when the item was shipped. Getting someone to help me through the Ticketmaster customer service phone number was imposible. So i was very upset that the automated service was "trying to help me" but nothing that i was calling about qualified as an option. The stages were a bit too close, so you could be at a stage listening to an artist and the noise from other stages would transfer over. Navigating the festival was a bit confusing, there was wayy too many people and the stages kept showing the lineup at each stage but it kept dissapearing so it was very confusing. The map had the same color for 2 stages in the same color of ink. Also, a couple of people cancelled or didnt show up (wiz kid) so waiting and waiting for an artist with no communication and another artist showing up without having no idea who they were. Every artist with the exception of a few were just late. So just a bit disorganized. I did love the food options which were amazing, and the rides were fun as well. Oh i also feel that more could have been done to navigate the rain. Complentary rain capes? The amount of mud was discusting too. A lot of people tripped and fell including myself.

    Jay Z was dope!

by Warr3n on 9/6/17Ben Franklin Parkway - Philadelphia

The only good thing was seeing jay z. The bathroom situation was the worst and all the underage people there was even worse. I saw a 16 yr old throw up on a total stranger. This event should 21 and over.

    Headliners Kicked Ass

by Greg15 on 9/5/17Ben Franklin Parkway - Philadelphia

Ok so the rain on Saturday sucked I ruined my sneakers the mud sucked but whatever. For all the big names (chainsmokers etc.) the crowd was packed there were so many fist fights it was dangerous you really have to be careful definitely do not try to squeeze your way up if it's already freakin packed and I cannot even tell you how ridiculously tight I was for j cole, chainsmokers, marshmello, and jay-z because I was towards the front. Nonetheless, it was amazing, great performances, top notch food but long ass lines, expensive weekend but I know I'm going next year

    Good music, bad crowd.

by Lemming on 9/5/17Ben Franklin Parkway - Philadelphia

The music is good overall, a lot of good artists for a decent price if you catch the early bird. The crowd is 90% teenagers though, so it's not for me. If you are above the age of 21, even 18, you will feel extremely awkward hanging around all the baby faced kids.
