The hip hop self-starters Macklemore & Ryan have gone far in a short time: they brought thrift stores to the masses with breakout No. 1 single “Thrift Shop,” released their debut album Heist to a No. 2 spot on the Billboard 200, and came out in support of same-sex marriage with gay rights anthem “Same Love.” Combining Macklemore’s thoughtful, funny verses and Lewis’ expertly crafted productions, their unique take on hip hop has struck a major chord with audiences, but what ultimately makes the duo a success has been their ability to write some of the year’s catchiest hooks. As a performer, Macklemore radiates positive energy and delivers his rapid-fire lyrics with crystal clear precision – Lewis takes a supporting role, cueing the beats, hyping the crowd, and engaging in the occasional crowd surf. The pair are on tour in 2013 in support of their debut album, and tickets are in high demand thanks to their reputation for dynamic, must-see live shows.
The Seattle-based duo first joined forces in 2006 when Lewis became Macklemore’s promo photographer, but the focus quickly shifted to music with the release of The VS. series, which included The VS. EP in 2009 and The VS. Redux in 2010. Their 2013 debut The Heist took three years to write and record, and it shows – from the extensive list of collaborators to the appearance of the Seattle Rock Orchestra, the record oozes originality and craftsmanship. In addition to producing, recording, and mixing all of their recordings, Lewis also directs their music videos, including the video for No. 1 single “Can’t Hold Us,” an epic seven-minute-long mini-film that earned them an MTV Video Music Award for Best Hip-Hop Video. As for the music’s point of view, Macklemore isn’t afraid to challenge the status quo of his chosen genre – from questioning the materialism of hip hop culture in “Thrift Shop” to lamenting homophobia among rappers in “Same Love,” these are songs that embrace diversity and endorse keeping an open mind.
Awsome night. Couldn't ask for more. Everything was so unreal. Just like I dreamed it would be touching Macklemore's ankle !!
Wish the opening act wasn't that long. Setting up stage took too long too. Other than that, was an amazing show!
Love the horns rap beautiful choruses and social consciousness. Great vibe. Agganis is nice venue.
Amazing show they did not disappoint when they come back to Boston I'm there!
My husband, son and I went to the concert to celebrate my son's 11th and my 50th birthdays! We had a blast! The show had great energy and we danced all night! Awesome way to celebrate. Can't wait to see them again!
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis put on an amazing show. It's fun, inspirational, well-put together. It was like a giant dance party, but he still touched on some serious issues in our society and gave an amazing speech. The opening act was pretty awful though, not sure who chose them. Other than that, I would see Macklemore again for sure! He's an amazingly talent person!
Fantastic performance. High energy, great setlist, a little talking between songs but not too much. I had high expectations and they were exceeded!
Not only was it truly entertaining, I agree with their political views and their lifestyle choices. The sets, the costumes, the dance off… All fantastic. Best show I've been to in a long time.
The show was great. We saw them earlier in the year in Atlanta and thought that show was amazing. This topped that and then some.
I think it would be impossible not to have a good time at this show! From the moment they hit the stage the energy never stopped! They didn't need fancy light shows and fire to keep your attention. Macklemore himself sounded amazing live. R.L was up higher so he wasn't lost on the stage. You could see him easily. They did a great variety of songs, and interacted with the crowd the whole time. When they performed "Can't hold us" the place went crazy! Macklemore went into the crowd during this song. I am a 38 year old mom of two teenagers and can truthfully say this show just may be the best I've seen.
Absolutely amazing! Macklemore and Ryan Lewis put on a magnificent show. From start to finish, it was full of energy and I enjoyed every second of it! I will definitely see them again and again.
He was so cool and the whole show was so well put together. Macklemore is definitely one of my favorite concerts I've ever been to, definitely up there with Taylor Swift for stage presence. The whole show was upbeat and exciting and I definitely want to see him again when he comes back!
I was expecting this show to be great but Macklemore exceeded my expectations. He not only added songs from the Heist that everyone loves, but he put on the most energetic performance of his new hits as well. The crowd was pumped and I have to say this was the best concert I have seen in my life.
So I'm a 41 y.o. Mom of two teenagers... Boy 13 and girl 17. I bought the tix for myself and my kids. Night of the show I'm thinking... What the hell did I get myself into??? I offered my ticket to my daughter to go with her boyfriend and brother... But it was too late to get the plan together so I had to go. The first two openers, sorry to say, were sleepers. I kept looking around to see if everyone else felt the same way. Minimal people cheering hardly anyone into it... Anyway, Macklemore comes on- He was awesome!!! He took the time to talk to the crowd... Got on someone's shoulders .... And was just plain entertaining. I would definitely see him again. He really knows how to put on a show and kept the crowd going the entire 2 hours he was on stage.
Honestly, an amazing show. The whole crowd was feeding off his energy. There were times you could feel the whole stadium moving. An incredible experience.
Always a great performance. Really engages the crowd
Awesome show. Agganis Arena in Boston. I'd actually like to see more of them in the media as they have important messages and social causes. To be talented, entertaining and bring important messages across is great. I'm not one for listening to political rants etc on my dime when I see a show but clearly this artist is proactive in his messages in his artistry. The only thing I'd say is that I didn't care for the improv sex acts on stage. Why bring vulgarity into your show which shows women as sex objects. Seems abit hypocritical. Thus 4 stars
Macklemore was amazing, he sang a plethora of his great songs. I would highly recommend.
This was definitely one of the best concerts I've been to. They interacted with the crowd and the music sounded great! I always love when you can actually hear the vocals. Highly recommend.
By far the best concert I have ever been to!!! Awesome show by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis!
