About

Lyle Lovett in Concert

A singer, composer and actor, Lyle Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums over three decades. Coupled with his gift for storytelling, the Texas-based musician fuses elements of Americana, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues in a convention-defying manner that breaks down barriers. Whether touring as a ‘Duo’ or with his ‘Acoustic Group’ or ‘The Large Band’, Lovett’s live performances show not only the breadth of this Texas legend’s deep talents, but also the diversity of his influences, making him one of the most compelling and captivating musicians in popular music. Since his self-titled debut in 1986, Lyle Lovett has evolved into one of music’s most vibrant and iconic performers. Among his many accolades, besides the four Grammy Awards, he was given the Americana Music Association’s inaugural Trailblazer Award, and was named Texas State Musician. His works, rich and eclectic, are some of the most beloved of any living artist working today.

    Great show!

    by Brodehef on 8/22/23

The music was wonderful. Many of the Large Band members are college professors of their instruments. Lyle's commentaries/humor kept everyone engaged. The back up singers were terrific. Perfect mix of old and new

    FABULOUS!!!!!!

    by Nancy on 8/22/23

LL and the band were, as usual, perfection: their singing, playing and talking. Had a great center orchestra seat with no one’s head blocking my view! Couldn’t ask for more!

    Always fun, but…

    by D. G. on 8/22/23

There was something just off with Lyle’s sound system. It was tinny and cut out at times. I kept on expecting the sound people to come out and give him a different mic. I saw him 3 years ago in Houston, and the act hasn’t changed much. But, it’s always enjoyable.

    Never disappoints

    by lauralu on 8/21/23

I splurged (so to speak) and got 5th row tickets. I don't think there could have been a bad seat in the house but boy was I glad about our placement. Lyle is a fabulous storyteller, song writer, singer, guitar player, performer - shall I go on? He thanks us for coming cuz he couldn't do what he does without us - well he provides us with songs that end up synchronizing with poignant moments in our lives and those memories evoke emotion. It is a beautiful exchange between performer and audience. I love Lyle Lovett!

    by Roy on 8/20/23

I don’t know how many times I’ve seen Lyle Lovett in concert, but his performance at the Alabama Theatre was among the best. His songs evoke a lot of memories in my journey with Lyle’s music, and I couldn’t recommend it any more highly!

    Great Show

by Steve & Terri on 8/20/23

The name of his band was simply “Large Band” — and I’d say that was accurate. 15 total including Lyle. And they were each and every one amazing. The show was 2 hours and 54 minutes long. Great music but also lots of dialogue with the band— stories about each song but also just chatted. I think he went around and talked to each band member about when they first visited New Orleans. I really like that in a concert. Feels more personal.

    Great show!

    by Mike B on 8/20/23

This was our 4th time seeing Lyle and each show is unique and entertaining. He’s a great storyteller (in song and in between songs) and I really appreciated his dialogue with the band more so than the typical introduction. The anticipation of If I Had a Boat is always palpable, but there were some great old songs, a couple new ones (12th of June) and some surprise covers in there, too.

    Just WOW

    by Mary on 8/20/23

He puts on the best show l have ever seen. He told stories and told us about the performers in his Large Band, some of whom had known each other for decades. But then again, after l heard him for the first time at the Saenger in the late 80s, l have sworn to run away with him! Worth twice the ticket price. lt seems the show was about three hours long, uninterrrupted. As for the Orpheum, ushers were scarce and there were no signs to direct you. We found our entrance by chance. Great pre-paid parking right next door, Roosevelt Hotel across the street, lots of light but l didn’t see a single police officer. Nevermind all that. Don’t miss this show!

Lyle Lovett & His Large Band was Great!

    by Yasmin on 8/20/23

The concert was fantastic, and Lyle's performance was perfect. His band put on an outstanding performance. I took my best girl to the show, and she loved it! She had never seen or heard of Lyle Lovette before I took her to the show. I must say that it was one of my best experiences. I hate to hear him talk, but I LOVE how he sings. I am so glad that I was able to see him this time!

Truly Entertaining Save for One Thing

    by EntertainMe on 8/19/23

This was my first Lyle Lovett concert and I hope it won't be my last. Amazing talent all around the "Large Band"and Lyle is so funny and poetic. It was exactly the kind of evening I hoped for until the trombonist decided to go on a political rant. I do not understand why entertainers don't just stick to entertaining us. I didn't pay for two tickets to get his political opinions. Lyle's music brings out the shared human experience in simple yet poetic terms. That was what I was there to hear. Unfortunately, it took 30 minutes for me to get the political rant out of my head and enjoy the show again. Can entertainers use their music as their platform and let us decide we want to participate. I absolutely support the trombonist's right to have his opinion, but I don't want to pay to hear it

    Made early exit

    by Jeri on 8/19/23

So excited that Lyle Lovett and the large band finally came to Birmingham. Huge fan!! First song we could not understand a single word. Thought the microphone was defective but the entire night was pretty much same-if you knew the words then you could follow. The “dancing “ song was painful to listen to..Too much chatter about children. Large Band is a very talented group. I think his voice was worn out after so many concerts. We moved our seats hoping things would improve. Didn’t help. Certainly felt cheated-if his voice was “gone”and as bad as it was, then cancel concert so we don’t waste our time and money. Many people left early for same reason. No energy and no excitement. Extremely disappointed- had looked forward to this so much. Clearly he tried to sing but could not. I read that another show was the same thing-2 nights previous. Asked friend during first song, Who is THAT?..Lots of people were milling around in lobby area asking same thing
