About

Lyle Lovett in Concert

A singer, composer and actor, Lyle Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums over three decades. Coupled with his gift for storytelling, the Texas-based musician fuses elements of Americana, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues in a convention-defying manner that breaks down barriers. Whether touring as a ‘Duo’ or with his ‘Acoustic Group’ or ‘The Large Band’, Lovett’s live performances show not only the breadth of this Texas legend’s deep talents, but also the diversity of his influences, making him one of the most compelling and captivating musicians in popular music. Since his self-titled debut in 1986, Lyle Lovett has evolved into one of music’s most vibrant and iconic performers. Among his many accolades, besides the four Grammy Awards, he was given the Americana Music Association’s inaugural Trailblazer Award, and was named Texas State Musician. His works, rich and eclectic, are some of the most beloved of any living artist working today.

lawn seats not recommended for some

by cincyohio on 7/17/09Fraze Pavilion - Kettering

The concert itself was excellent. Lyle played lengthy sets and was very engaging with his audience. The down side of the evening was the excessive talking by lawn guests. I would not reccommend lawn seats to concert goers who really came to listen to the music. Perhaps it is the picnic type atmosphere on the lawn that lends itself to people talking/visiting throughout the concert. This was very distracting. Is worth the cost to spend a little more to be placed in the seated section.

    An Exceptional Gift

by Zemo on 7/17/09Fraze Pavilion - Kettering

Lyle Lovett's music encompasses every genre of American music and it is reflected in the songs he writes, the make-up of the Large Band (Russ Kunkel on drums is an added bonus!), and the diversity of the audience. Electric guitar leads could use enough volume to hear, but technically that was the only problem. If Dylan is 1A in terms of lyrics and composition, Lovett is vastly overlooked at 1Aa. Most impressive, however, was the humility and quirky wit of Mr. Lovett -- he actually talked in between songs about the songs, his personal life, the band members, and a few random thoughts! The only term I can think of to describe the overall performance is "musical integrity" ... excellence in every aspect.

    Lyle Lovett's Amazing Grace

by mitchesa on 7/17/09Fraze Pavilion - Kettering

It's a shame that any performer has to endure shouts from the peanut gallery for their own personal song "requests", but Lyle Lovett handles this with amazing grace. A Walt Whitman-type story-teller, he embues quiet humor with his anecdotes between songs. This year's tour has minor changes to the band's lineup, and a few new songs, but they are musicians who blend the notes as seemlessly as they do the transitions between the songs. If you ever thought you would be attending a "country" concert when seeing Lyle Lovett and his Large Band, you would be sadly mistaken. The experience is worth witnessing. Go!

Lyle Lovett was cool and classy!

    by RFM1 on 7/17/09Fraze Pavilion - Kettering

Lyle, his Large Band, and his singers all looked cool and classy in their tailored suits. Lyle connected with the audience by talking to the audience between songs. Lyle is very talented and he has a very talented band as well. Lyle sounds even better live than he does on his recordings. He plays a great variety of styles...jazz, country, easy rock, and blue grass - which all sounded fantastic!

One of the best collections of musicians

by Daytonfan on 7/17/09Fraze Pavilion - Kettering

I expected a Lyle Lovett concert to be good, but even outside of Lovett himself, this was one of the best collections of touring musicians and back-up singers I've ever seen. Completely solid.

    LoveLovett

by jersigirl on 7/17/09Fraze Pavilion - Kettering

As always, Lyle and his Large Band were amazing, regaling the audience with a mix of bluegrass, gospel and standards(though, not unfortunately San Antonio Girl or Private Conversation, would love to hear those sometime. Not just the music, Lyle is a consumate charmer, he interacts with the audience, tells funny stories, seems like such a nice person, you'd love to know him better.

Lovett shined under the stars at Fraze!

by Tkks on 7/17/09Fraze Pavilion - Kettering

Lyle Lovett was fabulous. He and his large band were musically enchanting and yet still high energy. I have been a Lovett fan for years, and this was my first opportunity to see him perform. It was worth the wait. The band consisted of fiddler, cello, mandolin/acoutic guitar, electric guitar, electric bas, string bass, piano and drums, along with 4 back up singers (including Francine). I truly enjoyed how tight the musicians played together. With a band that large, sometimes the tight rythms and harminies can get a little less clean, but these fellas (only one woman onstage -- Francine) were together and hot! There were a few numbers that were markedly bluegrass, peppered with fiddle and mandolin solos, which were my favorites. OVerall, I would highly recommend the show as entertaining and musically divine.

    WOW!

by mtbotle on 7/17/09Fraze Pavilion - Kettering

I've been a Lyle fan for many years but had not had the chance to see him until last night. Great show, great band! I've been to hundreds of concerts in my life and I would say this was one of the top 10 I've seen. They played something from most of his albums and some great new stuff too. GO SEE THIS SHOW IF YOU CAN!
