    BEST CONCERT IN YEARS!

by JOURDENSGRANDMA on 6/13/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

This was the best concert I have seen in many years! It proves that big productions of multi-member bands and special effects does not a quality show make! There were no other instruments drowning out the lyrics - and no solos dragging out too long. These two guys sat in chairs and played the most amazing music on their guitars. They bantered back and forth and Lyle Lovett's straight face was priceless as John Hiatt told funny jokes. The lyrics of songs were much better heard from John Hiatt because of his naturally booming voice. But Lyle's song selection was a great variety of entertaining stories that he put to music. These guys performed for more than 2 hours straight, took a little break and came out for an encore with two songs that were the perfect for ending a fantastic evening. Loved the show so much - wish there were more artists willing to show vulnerability with performing acoustically in a smaller venue to give their audience more connection and closeness to their performance as well as their art.

    Lovett and Hiatt Class Act!!

by KellBell488 on 6/13/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

These two are classic artists who not only soar in their guitar playing, song writing, and singing, but bring the audience into their den with impeccable timing and wry humor. The Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall was a lovely living room acoustically but the seats are very cramped and uncomfortable and I'm petit. That was only downside for me. We had great view though, and a wonderful evening.

Awesome concert! It was a nice intimate setting with Lyle and John playing by themselves. Two amazing guitar players and song writers.

    boared

by qoigyth on 6/13/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

I thought they would actually play together. Instead they would take turns and the other would watch except for a few songs. No backing piano or acustic base or anything.. The rehersed banter between songs was too long, lowbrow humor that was often inaudible. Sorry to say, it was the worst show I have seen in recent history.

Lovett and Hiatt the very best

by murdoch on 6/13/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

I've been to all of the Lovett/Hiatt concerts in Portland and by far this was the very best. They seemed so relaxed with each other. I loved their back and forth barbs.

An acoustic evening w/ Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt

by Oscarxxxxx199 on 6/13/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

Thouroughly enjoyed. Would have loved to hear a few more songs with the two of them together. It was really fun when John would chime in on Lyle's songs and improvise and they would play together.

    True artists and gentlemen

by noefite on 6/13/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

I had an opportunity to meet Lyle outside the Hall on Saturday, and I have to say it was the most happy moment I have had in a long time. Lyle was a true gentlemen and seemed very happy to sign my album cover. We spoke for a few minutes, and I was able to get a picture with him. The show was incredible, and the humor and music were top notch. They both played music that I haven't hear in concert before, which always makes for a wonderful time. Thank you both. I will remember this day for the rest of my life. Definitely a finer show.

    Amazing songwriters and guitarists

by Anonymous on 6/13/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

What a wonderful way to spend an evening. The lyrics are amazing and the crystal clear acoustic guitars sounded great. I also enjoyed the "banter" although I know they have been at it for a while. Thye showed a tremendous respect for each other, as they should

    intimate and entertaining

by bwillim6 on 6/13/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

It was an opportunity to hear two great musicians play off of each other. They are both great story tellers. Differing styles, yet very complimentary. I would love to see them together again. The only thing I would change...is to have them play together more. Their voices and styles do compliment each other.

    lyle lovett and john hiatt

by kokovaughn on 6/12/11Marin Veterans' Memorial Auditorium At Marin Center - San Rafael

This was an easy show. The two were comfortable with one another and played off each others' comments. At times, it seemed a little contrived but their amazing talent makes up for everything. At each in between moment I was on the edge of my seat, literally, waiting for the next song. I liked how they played every audience request. There were 4, if I remember correctly. At one point, I was about to shout "Flyswatter" the gentleman two rows behind me shouted "Friend of the Devil". How could I lose...it is the only song I know that actually has my name in it! Overall, they are just two damn good guitarist storytellers who I could watch play and sing forever. Thanks John and Lyle. It has been since the mid-90's I have seen each one of you and as I sat there reveling in these amazing songs played live in front of me, I realized I was away, way too long. Don't miss this show if you can help it.

    The Smothers Brothers with Soul

by Anonymous on 6/12/11Marin Veterans' Memorial Auditorium At Marin Center - San Rafael

These two gentlemen have beautiful voices, play beautiful guitar and write great songs. I loved their banter. I wished I could have heard two of my favorites from John Hiatt; FEELS LIKE RAIN and LIPSTICK SUNSET. That would have given them five stars. The sound levels for the guitars was great but the levels for the voices was too low in comparison to the instruments, their lyrics were drowned out sometimes.

    Absolutely Amazing

by toughtoplease33 on 6/12/11Marin Veterans' Memorial Auditorium At Marin Center - San Rafael

Everything about this show was awesome. Easy parking at the venue is always a good way to begin a show experience. The Marin Center was the perfect venue -- not a bad seat in the house, and the sound engineer was excellent. But the best part of the evening was the easy repartee between Lyle and John. It was friendly and their humor played off of each other beautifully. I liked the method that they used initially of taking turns playing songs, and I especially liked it when the other one would join in. Their voices blend beautifully. It is such a pleasure to listen to guitars played in tune, and I loved the alternate tunings they both utilized on nearly every song. My only negative comment is that the concessionaire ran out of all beer and wine 20 minutes before the show -- citing the fact that there is no intermission (so?). That was a minor disappointment in an overall excellent experience.

The set was just the two of them sitting together on the stage and trading off songs. Sometimes they played together. They were personable and funny and it felt like an intimate show.

You'll never want to see a concert in another venue. Lyle and John were superb. Great experience. The evenings there are cool so bring a blanket. Your date will have a tough time in heels, due to the hilly terrain at the site. Not that I'd ever try to talk a pretty girl out of getting dressed up in heels....

Lyle Lovett was as engaging as ever; he really connects with his audience. John Hiatt is an amazing songwriter, and his performance felt straight from the heart.
