Absolutely loved the concert. The music was great. The casual setting was a treat. Like listening in on a jam session.

Hiatt was good, Lyle was even better

by JavaJones on 6/14/11Marin Veterans' Memorial Auditorium At Marin Center - San Rafael

I went to this show with a friend of mine, both of us have been big John Hiatt fans for a few years now. I'm familiar with Lyle's hits, don't listen to him much, but figured I'd enjoy the interaction between the two. I think we both assumed we'd be more into Hiatt than Lovett. What a surprise then when Lyle Lovett absolutely stole the show! Don't get me wrong, John was good. The songs he played were not all what I would have chosen (Cry Love and Feels Like Rain would have been perfect for an acoustic show), but what he did play he executed well. But Lovett really impressed with his excellent guitar playing and great, unique voice. Both of these guys have what many consider to be unusual voices, and I enjoy both fairly equally I'd say, but Lovett had I think a better song selection for an acoustic show. That's a big part of what made him stand out. That and the fact I hadn't seen him live before. The format was just the two of them on stage with a guitar each and a harmonica for Hiatt. They talked and joked back and forth and traded off doing songs, sometimes joining the other for some backing vocals or rhythm guitar. The banter between them was consistently funny and never excessive or boring. They're both very likable characters. So this was a great format for a show. When they sang together, their voices really complemented each other. In fact I wish they'd done so more. Overall a great show and I think on another night Hiatt would probably play some other songs that might have grabbed me more. Lovett is really a delight though, and the two of them together complement each other well and make for a great show.

    John Hiatt & Lyle Lovett

What's not to like - two American singer songwriters at their best. If you can see them - DON'T MISS IT! They are a national treasure.

Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt - what a team!

by Marcylyn on 6/13/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

Great night of music and stories. These two fantastic musicians balance one another perfectly and bantered beautifully between songs. Sometimes they even assisted one another which amplified the power of the music. They were very appreciative of the audience and the feeling was most definitely mutual. I didn't want the concert to end.

    So Good So Fine

by PortlandGal on 6/13/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

Two guitars, two virtuosos, two solid hours -- no intermission -- too too good. Both Lovett and Hiatt seemed to enjoy the format of taking turns just singing one song after another. They didn't collaborate much, but their conversation was fun, and and the contrast between the two voices and song styles kept it interesting. I realized as I listened to Lovett that I had not paid attention before to what a great guitar player het is. I loved it. The two hours flew by.

lyle is one of the all-time greats!

by lylelover2011 on 6/13/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

This concert would not even get "fair" rating if it hadn't been for Lyle. Well, I thought I would like John and Lyle together but not at the Schnitz. Not any fault of theirs, but there was a camera guy taking photos for 30 minutes plus, right near us , and his camera was LOUD. CLICK, CLICK, CLICK, CLICK...you get the idea. It was very annoying listening to him, while trying to listen to the music. Also, John Hiatt is a good musician, but the microphone and sound system quality was not good at all that night. The harmonica was too harsh, the guitar was too loud and the sound of his mic was not good. The lighting sucked too. We were about blinded by their guitars reflecting the bright white lights. I have never seen a bad concert at the Schnitz, so I hope this was just a fluke. I won't go to another combo with Lyle. Really, Lyle is hands down, one of the best musician-song-writer-singer-entertainers EVER!!!!!!! I love his music and I do not have a single complaint about him during this concert, unless to comment that I would rather see just him alone with his guitar on stage and that would have been better. Anyway, Lyle by himself, lyle with a big band, Lyle with a not-so-big band is not to be missed and I look forward to the next time he comes to town sans the duo.

Honorable Gentlemen giving a Inspiring evening

by jubilant on 6/13/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

These two gentlemen gave one of the most solidly intimate evenings that I have ever experienced at the Schnitz in a long while. The time spent with these guitar playing story telling with more than one good belly laugh made this a excellent evening for what i believe was a packed house. Thank you.

Lyle Lovett & John Hiatt -- What a duo!!!

by Camasman on 6/13/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

Lovett and Hiatt are both outstanding in their own rights. This acoustical pairing of the two was fantastic. It was nice to have them trade off playing songs giving the audience the opportunity to listen to one, then the other. Not only did we get to hear each play their different styles of music, we got to listen to them play and sing together. The manner in which they exchanged banter and stories made the evening seem like we were in a much smaller and personal setting. Great job to whomever set this up!

    Wow, great team!

by TimmyButton on 6/13/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

Awesome show! These two guys with two very different styles work really well together. Lyle would play a song, John would play a song and they would banter back and forth in between. Really well done. It makes me wonder who's idea it was to get these two together. Kind of like Crossroads, but not all that far apart. It surprised me that they didn't have more songs that they played together or backed each other up on.

    Lyle Lovett & John Hiatt

A terrific acoustic concert; great musicians, well matched though Lyle is the mega-star of the duo and funny seemingly unrehearsed patter between songs.

Two stars who take nothing for granted

by minnmedia on 6/13/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

Legends don't have to get lazy. Lyle and John gave the performance their all, and played off of each other like old friends - which I presume they are. And it was especially gratifying to hear them play in the (relatively) intimate setting of Portland's Schnitzer Theatre.

Lyle Lovett & John Hiatt hit it again! Fantastic!

by Scrubjay on 6/13/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

Lyle Lovett & John Hiatt are two distinctly different musicians whose work and personalities complement each other in performance. Perhaps due to their friendship and respect for each other neither one of them tried to upstage the other nor dominate the tone of the evening. Lyle was very self contained in contrast to John's physically fidgety exuberance. Nice contrast. Their droll interchanges between songs were fun to hear. The way they traded off playing songs made sense in the context of the evening which was one long uninterrupted set. Good format. We heard them at the Schnitz before and found it an excellent venue. I wouldn't go to hear them at the Rose Garden. I hope Kink brings them back to the Schnitz next year. It's rare to see two musicians just focus on their songs without the distractions of a total band. When you do bring them back, could you please have the sound tech back off the mikes on the guitars and bring up their voices so that the sound isn't so unbalanced as it was on Saturday? With such articulate songwriters and funny people, it is too bad to have their words swallowed by the distortion of the guitars' amplification.

    Lyle is an American Legend

by salsam on 6/13/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

Lyle is as always perfect Lyle...laidback, super super talented, funny real. John Hiatt we weren't as familiar with, but they worked well together. However, the amplifier on the guitars was cranked a bit to high, to the point of pain.

    Lyle Lovett - Loved it!!!

by drgnbait on 6/13/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

What can I say; Lyle was amazing, as he always is. I saw Lyle and John together in 2009; this show was very similar. If you haven't seen them together, I'd definitely recommend this tour! But as much as I like John Hiatt, 50% of the show with him singing was a bit too much for me. Sorry John Hiatt fans - I don't mean to be disrespectful. 100% Lyle is the perfect amount for me.

    Good as ever!

by myquest on 6/13/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

Saw them again in Portland, Oregon on Saturday and they were as good as ever. Third time we've seen them share a stage, once was with the Songwriters Tour. They play together so well they should cut an album together. I'd love to see them both together in front of a band. The Arlene Schnitzer hall is a great place for an accoustic act like this. Hope Hiatt comes around soon with his band.

At home with Lyle and John

by massage123 on 6/13/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

What an incredible evening. Lyle and John's banter was so spontaneous and hilarious. The music was outstanding. It seemed sometimes though, the guitars were louder than the voice.

Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt were fantastic!

by rs59 on 6/13/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

I never ever post reviews so breaking my own rule here as they were SO great. I have seen Lyle Lovett several times and he is always fantastic. John Hiatt was a huge (great) surprise, and the format (just the two of them/no band), acoustics (wow, never better), humor, music and combination of the two performers was off the charts. We enjoyed every minute of the show. They overdelivered!

    Acoustic guitar heaven

by RPhil on 6/13/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

If you admire (or better yet play) acoustic guitar you shouldn't miss this show. It's a chance to see two masters of the craft who love what they do. The banter between them is very entertaining, they seem to have a genuine admiration for each other. I will see them again at any opportunity.
