Louisville Cardinals Men's Basketball History

An excellent college basketball program across all eras, Louisville is notable especially for its continuity. Bernard "Peck" Hickman (1944-67) went 443-183 during his time in the ‘Ville; John Dromo (1967-71) went 68-23 during his brief run as coach, which ended when a heart attack forced him to retire; Denny Crum (1971-2001) went to six Final Fours, won two national championships and left campus with a shiny 675-295 record; Rick Pitino (2001-17) added another Final Four appearance while going 416-143 overall.

The Crum era in particular is regarded as one of the great coaching tenures in the history of the sport. After serving as the top assistant to the legendary John Wooden at UCLA, Crum took the Cardinals to the Final Four — the first coach to make a Final Four in his first season as a head coach. He earned the nickname "Cool Hand Luke" for his demeanor and "Mr. March" for all the deep postseason runs his teams produced over the years. His offenses were famous for their post play — "Never Nervous Pervis" Ellison was the rock of the Cardinals' second national championship team — and his defenses were a frenzy of switches. The style of play was perhaps ill-suited to the era of the three-pointer, but he was still winning games into the mid ‘90s, including a 26-9 season in 1996-97.

Currently, the team is led by coach Pat Kelsey.

Louisville Cardinals at KFC Yum! Center

Louisville’s KFC Yum! Center seats more than 22,000 fans, making it the second-largest college hoops arena in the country. The student section is known as The Ville'ns, and they keep the stadium lively. To juice their homecourt advantage, the Cardinals have made a habit of staging "color" events — "White Outs," "Red Outs" and "Black Outs" — during which fans are encouraged to wear the same color to games.

We arrived about two hours early, because we wanted to tour the new Yum Stadium. Although we had nose bleed seats we had no difficulty in seeing the game. Had a great time. Wished only that they would let you leave and stamp your hand so you can get back in.

We had good tickets and enjoyed the game. Went to Spirit room following the game and watched NCAA basketball on television. We got to congratulate Rick Pitino and shake his hand after the game. The arena is nice. I do not like the commute to downtown. Ticetmaser did nice job on tickets. I ordered online and picked up at Krogers. This was no problem.

by BetsC on 11/18/10KFC YUM! CENTER - LouisvilleRating: 4 out of 5

While my team lost, I will not attest to the experience of the game. However, the staff of the YUM center was amazing. Extremely polite, personable and helpful. Great venue, staff and overall experience outside of the game's score.

Seating was awesome. Didn't expect to get suite level, box seats at an srimmage game. Availability to restrooms and other facility was awesome too. My husband says we won't get seat again in this area. Thanks Ticketmaster

  • KFC Yum Center

by Anonymous on 10/26/10KFC YUM! CENTER - LouisvilleRating: 5 out of 5

My jaw dropped open as soon as i walked in the door. The arena has a variety of food and beverage, and seems to be well staffed. The seating and digital graphics are out of this world. Only down side is the bathrooms are a little small for such large crowds. Above all, it's full of Louisville Cardinal Pride.

  • Red/White game was amazing

    by cardsfan3 on 10/26/10KFC YUM! CENTER - LouisvilleRating: 5 out of 5

My family and I went to the UofL Red/White scrimmage game which was held at the new KFC Yum! Center. This place is nice and not a bad seat in the place.

  • great building

by superdaveb on 10/26/10KFC YUM! CENTER - LouisvilleRating: 4 out of 5

The new facility was great, I am still not sure about the parking. We parked 5 blocks away, seems like the farther the better.

  • by GOCARDS17 on 10/26/10KFC YUM! CENTER - LouisvilleRating: 5 out of 5

great seats, perfect half-court view, kids enjoyed it, parking was easily accessable, coach P. interacted with crowd.

Interesting event. Worth $5, it was just weird cheering for both teams since both were UofL

Atmosphere, arena, players, and fans. All a class act!

  • Thumbs Down

    by lyd40216 on 10/26/10KFC YUM! CENTER - LouisvilleRating: 2 out of 5

The seating was too steep for older people. The sound system did not reach that far and all we heard was mumbling. I was looking forward to going to the new arena but with the seating and the parking I know that we will not be attending anytime in the future. Great idea but just not for the older crowd.
