About

The Los Angeles Philharmonic, affectionately called the LA Phil by concertgoers, is one of the most forward-thinking symphony orchestras in the country, as beloved by music lovers for its visionary programming as it is for its location in Frank Gehry's iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall. Originally founded in 1919, the Los Angeles Philharmonic emerged from relatively humble beginnings to become one of the world's premier symphony orchestras. Over the years, many notable conductors have led the orchestra, including Zubin Mehta, Andre Previn, and Esa-Pekka Salonen. In 2003, the LA Phil's popularity spiked after a move from the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion to Frank Gehyr's sculptural Walt Disney Concert Hall, which boasts world class acoustics and a one-of-a-kind organ designed by the architect. Celebrated young conductor Gustavo Dudamel took the reins in 2009, paving the way for the LA Phil's continued presence at the vanguard of concert music.

Dudamel is the best conductor alive

by classicaldude on 1/9/11Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

I have listened to Beethoven's 7th more times in my life than I can recall, including my university days when I was listening to the second movement almost compulsively. Yet, with Dudamel's orchestration and conducting, I felt like I was hearing the symphoney for the first time. I am so proud that the LA Phil was able to land this guy as our conductor. For anyone reading this, find out when he is conducting and just go.

    My new annual holiday event

by red4real on 12/29/10Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

This was my second year for the Holiday Organ Spectacular. I hope LA Phil continues this tradition because it is now my favorite holiday event. David Higgs is not only a spectacular organist but a fabulous and humorous host who speaks to the audience as if we were in his living room. Lisa Vroman and Mr. Higgs work very well together. Her voice is magnificent. I love that we, the audience, get to participate and that I get to experience familiar holiday pieces as well as pieces chosen from Europe's famous composers. Bravo Mr. Higgs!

Great but 35 minutes was too short.

by AGuyFrom99 on 12/15/10Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

The performance was Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto and Berzioz' Symphony Fantastique. Ms. Hahn, of course, played only for the 35-minute Violin Concerto and a very brief solo encore. Intermission, and then the Berlioz piece was performed sans Ms. Hahn. Somehow I was under the impression that she'd also play the Higdin piece, and perform her latest recording in it's entirety. Nope, she was onstage for all of about 35-37 minutes, and that was just too brief for someone used to other genres of music where 90 minutes or more is the standard. If this is the standard onstage time for the featured soloist, well, its just disappointing. I wanted more. So how was the 35 minutes? Very good. I was in the very last row, and can say that she had the absolute attention of the entire Hall, who hung on every note. At the end, from my vantage point can say with authority about 20-35% offerred a standing ovation. Ms. Hahn left the stage and came back out 4 times, finally playing a brief solo piece. Everybody clapped hardily, but I didnt' see anyone cry or bring out hankies. A few audible 'Bravos" & such were heard. Fact is, I'm not enough of an authority of the material to get all long-winded. I enjoyed myself. Overall sound from LAST ROW was very good. Now, visually, could not see Ms. Hahn's facial expressions at all from that distance. Subtracting one star only for that, after all, went mostly to hear, not see. The lower registers of the orchestra were a bit muddy from up there, but still felt all impactful moments suitably well. Finally, the Walt Disney Hall itself, inside and out, is almost worth the trip alone. If you consider yourself a music lover, you owe it to yourself to look over the Hall's program schedule and find a performance of someone you like and simply get down there. Give yourself plenty of time before the show to walk the grounds and bring your camera.
