About

The Los Angeles Philharmonic, affectionately called the LA Phil by concertgoers, is one of the most forward-thinking symphony orchestras in the country, as beloved by music lovers for its visionary programming as it is for its location in Frank Gehry's iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall. Originally founded in 1919, the Los Angeles Philharmonic emerged from relatively humble beginnings to become one of the world's premier symphony orchestras. Over the years, many notable conductors have led the orchestra, including Zubin Mehta, Andre Previn, and Esa-Pekka Salonen. In 2003, the LA Phil's popularity spiked after a move from the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion to Frank Gehyr's sculptural Walt Disney Concert Hall, which boasts world class acoustics and a one-of-a-kind organ designed by the architect. Celebrated young conductor Gustavo Dudamel took the reins in 2009, paving the way for the LA Phil's continued presence at the vanguard of concert music.

This was my first time to the Hollywood Bowl and I have to say that it is a great outdoor venue for events! I will definitely be attending more events in the future! As for the Tchaikovsky Spectacular, for lack of better words, it was SPECTACULAR! Dudamel and the orchestra were amazing, as were the dancers. I was happy with the dance numbers in the middle of the concert. My favorite part was the marching band at the end topped with the fireworks. Simply an amazing event that I would absolutely recommend to EVERYONE!

    Absolutely spectacular performance

    by 1Roxfan on 8/8/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The Tchaikovsky Concert was absolutely spectacular! The combination of the selections, integrated ballet dance and the "1812 Overture" finale with the pyrotechnics made for an extremely pleasant and memorable evening.

Bench Seating, BYOB, BYO Food, and fireworks. whats not to love? This show surprised me when they brought out ballet dancers and a full marching band for a portion of the show. :)

    What a spectacle evening

by Battlechief on 8/8/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Our group of four took the Lakewood park & ride bus - unfortunately the bus broke down as we entered the 101N at the 5N confluence ! However our bus driver had it under control and our back-up bus arrived very quickly. Evening saved. The performance was outstanding although two folks in our group felt that Gustovo should have dressed more formally as his orchestra had :-) quentesswnti LA summer evening experience to be treasured.

    Another Tchaikovsky winner

by rpuccini on 8/8/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I have head the Tchaikovsky program at the Bowl numerous times over the years. Like Stars and Stripes Forever, the 1812 Overture lends itself to a stirring experience. It was a nice touch to add actual ballet performers to the performance of Swan Lake. Although uncommunicative to the audience (something that really annoys me), Dudamel took a different approach to the overture that was very appealing. The cadence was a bit faster in places than in recordings I own. All in all, if you only go to the Bowl once in the season, this is when you should be there.

    Fireworks were average

I was really looking forward to this performance with the USC marching band and fireworks, but for me it did not live up to the hype. Music and ballet performers were great !

    Pure delight

by Grassfed on 8/8/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

first Hollywood bowl experience and it lived up to expectations. The big screens make a difference when sitting higher up in the huge amphitheater. Production had great Variety and Dudamel lived up to advance billing. A fun night. Not much time to make it from the bench seats to the waiting buses.

Dudamel is a fine conductor, the ballet dancers and fireworks were also remarkable. Enjoyed the program for Tchaikovsky that Dudmel lined up.

    Stravinsky's Firebird lacked fire

by gwhepner on 8/7/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Messy, overblown production with too much fuss and added noises. The 'balloon' video on stage added to the irrelevant details and shoved the historical-international message into our eyes, unnecessary. The Hand Spring Puppets were indeed amazing but too few and the actors holding the puppets were too obvious and added to the clutter. The opening of the Firebird's wings at the end was impressive but colorless considering it was supposed to be fire. The music was fine but if you wanted to appreciate it you had to close your eyes. However, it's always fun at the Bowl.

    Ballet Was A Divergent Distraction

by LAPhilLover on 8/7/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

As always, the LA Phil was great. The first half of the concert featured nice compositions from Debussy and Britten. Unfortunately, the second half of the concert was a confusing distraction. The ballet dancers were talented young folks, but the choreography and entire South African production was a divergent distraction that had nothing to do with Stravinsky's Firebird. It was difficult to enjoy the classical music while a person was banging a hockey stick on the stage floor. I would not have recommended this event to a friend, and I am disappointed with the decision makers at Hollywood Bowl. Perhaps the HB staff should add an additional approval process that includes reviews from a cross section of the LA Phil fan base.

    Obscure Copland pieces

by Anonymous on 7/31/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Seats and ambience were great. Our server was sweet and ran out to get me extra cream and sugar for my coffee. The music, while beautifully played, was not the most well known Copland symphonies until the very last piece. It wouldn't have won over new fans. A little disappointing.

    Classic Revisited

by TexanladyinLA on 7/23/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Such a great evening. The orchestra was excellent as it always is with Dudamel conducting. And the voices, particularly of Tony and Maria were great. I actually went twice.
