Fantastic Balanchine choreography combined with beautiful dancing!
I have watched the Nutcracker by various ballet groups worldwide in TV but having to watch it live was a lot more amazing. The Los Angeles Ballet performed the Nutcracker beautifully.
My wife, mother-in-law, and I enjoyed the Nutcracker Ballet thoroughly. As a young lady back in Russia, my wife would enjoy dancing ballet and needless to say she related to the performance in a very positive way, as did my mother-in-law and myself. Thanks so much for a great afternoon.
The dancing and staging was lovely, but I could not believe for the price I paid there was no live orchestra.
The price of the event was broadway level. The performance was junior high school!
My daughter and I go to a Nutcracker production every year but this one was disappointing. The costumes were ugly. The Waltz of the Flowers looked like Waltz of the Weeds. Every flower was green except for one. The Chinese Dance was danced by 2 Harlequins, the Spaniards wore tepid yellow costumes. The whole production lacked the glorious colors one expects from the Nutcracker. The dancing was good but I've seen much better productions.
Great dancing and choreography. The main characters however could have been used more effectively.
The dancing was pretty good, but The Nutcracker still fell flat. I don't think this ballet should be seen without the accompaniment of a live orchestra.
I have seen better versions of the Nutcracker in small town high schools. LA Ballet should be embarrassed. First of all - canned music?? Really? You'd think that maybe it wouldn't matter so much, but knowing the dancers are dancing to a CD of the soundtrack really sucks the live, connected feeling you get from watching ballet performed to an orchestra or even a piano. On top of that, many of the 'dancers' were really average. You could tell they spent $ on getting 3 or 4 solid stars, and the rest was just mediocre. I was so excited to take my daughter to the show - her first time. And I left so confused and disappointed. The Prince and Nutcracker were dressed so similarly that despite knowing the show very well, I left wondering who was who. The art direction was awful. One of the mice in the battle was literally doing jumping jacks. I think this was supposed to be funny? For a city of 9 million people that focuses on entertainment as its primary industry, you'd think we'd have a thriving ballet company. I spent $95/ticket on this travesty. It makes me appreciate real ballet performances, so I guess that's a silver lining.
