    Not as good as expected!

    by motherinbhof1 on 12/17/14Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

I love the ballet and wanted my son to experience it with a fun first impression. Well he was bored and I was totally disappointed. Where was the spectacular scenery, the imagery, the costumes, the dancing! It was if they phoned the performance in with a 3rd level company troupe. The only stand out was the Arabian dancers who actually had good choreography and had some heart. The whole performance was watered down dancing with the passion taken out. There were missing dance sequences to abbreviate the time for the kids. Which would be ok if they delivered the goods. The New York Ballet on a bad day would have been better than this. It just lacked the spectacular grandeur of "The Nutcracker"! At $200 plus for two tickets 6 rows from the stage it was just a disappointment, sorry to say. I LOVE the ballet and the choreography was just phoned in with no amazing sequences. My advice stay home and watch the Mariinsky Ballet on YouTube.

Magical and a direct line to the past

    by Nate090279 on 12/17/14Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

Tchaikovsky was a genius as well as the choreographer (forget his name). I feel like if something is old from another century, they must have been stuffy and disconnected, and watching this show, I felt like it was a direct line to 1892, and that they had all the wonder and fantasy and intellect and artistry we experience today. The dancers were stunning. It inspired me to go to ballet class more. Such talent and dedication. Bravo!

The synchronization was very poor. I expected as much from the children, but not from the adults. I have seen The Nutcracker in other cities, and this was the worst performance by far.

    Meh!

by cmemmett on 12/17/14Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

This interpretation of The Nutcracker varies greatly from a traditional production. I was with a first time viewer of the show and she was confused. Must agree. The dancers were good but not great. The music had been stylized, which I find unnecessary when working with the original brilliant score. The costumes, however, were lovely.

This Nutcracker production was a disappointment.

by Rozeygirl on 12/17/14Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

I took my family to the Dolby theater to see the Nutcracker Sunday evening. I have seen many productions of this ballet, but it was my grandkids' first ballet. I was hoping for beautiful sets and thrilling dancing. I was disappointed. The sets were something I could see in any local regional production, as was the dancing. One performance stood out, the Arabian dance performed exquisitely by Julia Cinquemani and her able partner, Alexander Castillo. I wanted their dance to go on and on. They were fabulous, and the audience agreed. They received the loudest applause of any of the dancers at curtain call. If I had paid regional theater prices, I would have no complaints. However, at over $100 per seat, I expected more. The theater itself upstaged this production. The Dolby is a beautiful theater.

We have enjoyed it a lot. The only thing I did not like that they were selling popcorn. This is not a movie theater and you are losing the touch of ballet.

    The Nutcracker was stunning.

    by Rach295 on 12/16/14Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

I bought these tickets to surprise my mom for her birthday, and she was definitely surprised!! Even though we were seated at the back of the mezzanine, we could still see everything, and it was beautiful. The costumes were beautiful, the dancers' technique was "on pointe." (Hahaha) It was a wonderful experience. I only wish there had been a live orchestra, but that was the only thing I would have changed. Bravo!

    Nutcracker was forgettable

    by cbook82 on 12/16/14Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

Can't believe I paid this much money to not hear a live orchestra during the ballet. Probably my fault for not doing more research ahead of time, but still very disappointing to go and see the Los Angeles Ballet pipe recorded music through the speakers. While the dancers were good enough, the production is pretty poor and I left pretty disappointed that I dropped this kind of cash on two tickets. Would not recommend seeing.

No Symphony = Bad performance - Waste of money

by ErnestDrum on 12/16/14Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

No symphony + bad dancers = a performance that is horrible. Only three good dancers in the entire troupe. If it wasn't my daughter's first performance, I would've walked out. Waste of time and money. I have seen multiple regional and small town performances that blow this away. I had high expectations for Los Angeles and they should be embarrassed. Apparently, this town is lacking in cultural arts.

    Good for kids

by Clareene on 12/16/14Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

The ballet was pretty appropriate for the kids. The performace lasted about 2hrs with intermission about 15-20 min. There were kids dancers on the stage so it made more interesting for children to watch. There was no life orchestra, so dont expect it. Some parts of the performance were lacking in actual dancing, but overall it was good, especially for those who want to bring kids over. They dont allow to take pictures in there.

Los Angeles Ballet's performance of The Nutcracker was excellent! On par with some of the great ballet companies of the world.

    LAB Nutcracker

by Daddybearphnx on 12/16/14Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

Dancers have good technique with Principles and Soloists shining in their roles. The young lady who played Clara was very good and will be a fine dancer someday. The choreography, staging and sets though seemed a bit average, but maybe I have been spoiled after more than a decade of San Francisco Ballet's Nutcracker. The high note was a different interpretation of Drosselmeyer, more theatrical and lively than often seen in other productions. Zheng Hua Li was delightful in the role and made him less dark and mysterious

    Kilts and kicks!

by MaddyMccaig on 6/24/14Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

This was my first time to the ballet, and it was captivating. I don't mean to offend any ballet afficionados, but I think male ballet dancers should wear kilts ('though I realize this costume would not suit the theme of non-Scottish ballets) all the time. Kilts do not accentuate the male parts, while at the same time the kilts allow audience members to keen at the dancers' muscled legs as the men twirl, leap and kick. The ballerinas were delicate in their lighter-than-air tutus and movements. The blue of "Serenade" was other-worldly and lovely. The music of "Serenade" was my favorite. I would attend again the performance of "Serenade" and "La Sylphide".
