Breathtaking beauty - support your local ballet!

by jamespbond on 11/1/16Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

Sublime aesthetic experience, and breathtaking artistry from the dancers to the choreography to the lighting and design. I am no expert but this is exactly what I have been looking for in a ballet and rarely found. I am so glad to have discovered our own intimate but exquisite "Los Angeles Ballet".

It had been a long time since I last saw the nutcracker, and it was beautiful

    Good, but not mindblowing

by LBinLA on 12/19/14Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

Dancers were quite good, although this production was not as breathtaking and acrobatic as some. Choreography tended to be anti-climactic though some of Tschaikovsky's most memorable pieces. Less impressed with the venue; Dolby theater is looking worse for the wear. Carpet was faded and ragged, and one of our seats had a hard lump in it, causing back pain for my guest (I traded seats with her after intermission).

    la ballet

by duchessofchaos on 12/18/14Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

the dancing for the nutcracker was pretty good with the standouts being the arabians...she had some serious grace. However this being the capital of the creative world i was sorely disappointed by the costumes and scenery.... the sugarplum fairy was rather drab and so were the sets.... amazing that nothing could be found in tinseltown to bedazzle the costumes or the sets.... for shame LA.

    Good Production

by Lolies on 12/17/14Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

I've seen countless productions of the Nutcracker, and while this was not the very best I've seen, it was quite good. I'm confident that new or seasoned fans would find it enjoyable. The theater is quite nice and it seems that most seats in the house are good. One reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that I missed having a live orchestra. Seems for this price that we shouldn't be listening to recorded music. Still, the sound quality was good. I found some of the costumes, particularly of the adult female guests at the opening party to be a bit drab. The dancers were quite good.

Good show for kids but the sound was bad!

by Gwendalen on 12/17/14Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

Overall a good show but there was no orchestra. Not worth for that money. Decorations were very simple. Kids would probably enjoy it the most.

    Not as good as expected!

    by motherinbhof1 on 12/17/14Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

I love the ballet and wanted my son to experience it with a fun first impression. Well he was bored and I was totally disappointed. Where was the spectacular scenery, the imagery, the costumes, the dancing! It was if they phoned the performance in with a 3rd level company troupe. The only stand out was the Arabian dancers who actually had good choreography and had some heart. The whole performance was watered down dancing with the passion taken out. There were missing dance sequences to abbreviate the time for the kids. Which would be ok if they delivered the goods. The New York Ballet on a bad day would have been better than this. It just lacked the spectacular grandeur of "The Nutcracker"! At $200 plus for two tickets 6 rows from the stage it was just a disappointment, sorry to say. I LOVE the ballet and the choreography was just phoned in with no amazing sequences. My advice stay home and watch the Mariinsky Ballet on YouTube.

Magical and a direct line to the past

    by Nate090279 on 12/17/14Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

Tchaikovsky was a genius as well as the choreographer (forget his name). I feel like if something is old from another century, they must have been stuffy and disconnected, and watching this show, I felt like it was a direct line to 1892, and that they had all the wonder and fantasy and intellect and artistry we experience today. The dancers were stunning. It inspired me to go to ballet class more. Such talent and dedication. Bravo!
