About

MICHAEL FLATLEY’S LORD OF THE DANCE is described by the New York Post as "fascinating, rewarding and above all, entertaining," and by the Los Angeles Times as "a showpiece extravaganza," Lord of the Dance is a mesmerizing blend of traditional and modern Celtic music and dance.  The story is based upon mythical Irish folklore as Don Dorcha, Lord of Darkness, challenges the ethereal lord of light, the Lord of the Dance.  Battle lines are drawn, passions ignite and a love story fueled by the dramatic leaps and turns of dancers’ bodies begins to build against a backdrop of Celtic rhythm.  The action is played out over 21 scenes on a grand scale of precision dancing, dramatic music, colorful costumes and stage-of-the-art staging and lighting.

I can never say it enough: the show was amazing!!!! this is my second time attending the show. I saw it in Virginia in 2009 and waited 4 years after that till they came to California in 2013. I will attend the next show in CA no matter what. I can't have enough of it!!!

    Lord of the Dance

by rdhdfairy68 on 4/12/13William Saroyan Theatre Fresno Convention & Entertainment Center - Fresno

The first part of the show I enjoyed and the very end. The red flame skulls threw me into left field. I thought I was going to see Celtic Dancing and then to see Satan being honored on stage just did not set right with me. As a Christian woman I would have walked out if I had not brought guests with me. I watched a couple families get up and take their children out when the dancers ripped off their customs and went down to swimsuits. I understand you were trying to portay good and bad. However, there had to be another way to do it. This was the second time I had attended a program at the Saroyan Theatre and before I attend again I will have to read reviews, before I attend.

    The glare of oncoming headlights

by japansa on 4/12/13William Saroyan Theatre Fresno Convention & Entertainment Center - Fresno

Far too many special lighting effects with bright LED lights aimed directly in the eyes of the audience made this the most jarring cultural event I've attended. I found myself actually shutting my eyes at several points because the glare and intensity of the lights was hurting my eyes. I'm not clear on how an audience can see what is happening on stage with that kind of lighting effect. Secondly, I found the storm trooper costumes disturbing. I understand the plot was tied to good versus evil, but our world is in the grip of a vast militaristic complex as it is. I am concerned that we are normalizing its presence by featuring that look in cultural events. Lastly, I was not pleased with the female dancers stripping off their dresses to reveal black underware. Really, do we need to reduce everything to a strip show? I found the technical expertise of the dancers stunning, and that could have been the focus of the show. Blinding lights, neo-Nazi allusions, and bikinis really have no place in a respectful homage to Irish dance traditions.

Lord of the Dance-lose the singer

by Galsnightout on 4/4/13State Theatre - Minneapolis

Four of us gals went to the show. I really enjoyed the dancing, could have probably watched it for a few hours more. The singing girl, not so impressed with. One song would have been enough. She sounded great, but not what we came to watch. And the seats at the venue were so small. Good show over all.

Not impressed. It was just ok...would not spend that kind of $ on this performance again. Will wait for River Dance to return. Would spend this and more on that performance.

    Good but not fantastic.

by LovesShows359 on 3/19/13North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North Charleston

The dancing was awesome but the story was a little modern/Las Vegas-y. Only have one other show to compare too which was more traditional as far as storyline and costumes but preferred that.

    Beyond expectations!

by LotDFan on 3/18/13North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North Charleston

What an outstanding performance! I always wanted to see Lord of the Dance and even before the event knew that it would be an exciting experience. But being there, seeing and hearing it far exceeded my expectations! The dancers were amazing in their mastery of the dance. They all displayed incredible power, control, rhythm and grace. I couldn't help but tap along with them during the whole show and walked out with a big smile on my face. :) I highly recommend the show to anyone and I will go see it again myself when it's in the vicinity again!

Lord of the Dance was good but not great

by debv41 on 3/18/13North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North Charleston

While the choreography was very good ,the dancers themselves were not as good as I've seen before. The timing was off in places. The fight scene was very good. The soloist had a lot of poise but her voice fell short of the mark. The viloinists were exceptional! Overall I would give this performance 4 out of 5 stars only because I have seen others and have something with which to compare.

    A bit adult in nature

by Dodiebear on 3/18/13North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North Charleston

As a mother of a 9 and 11 year old, I was excited to bring them to the show. It's difficult to find entertainment that is appropriate for children. More often than not I'm embarrassed to see that everything has violence and/or sex in it. So the thought of bringing the kids to this type of show sounded fun and a no-brainer. I was wrong. One of the main characters was "lust" or "sexual desire", not sure. But she danced like a stripper and even had silhouettes of stripper type dancers in the background. Also at one point the whole group of ladies ripped off their cute Celtic dresses and danced in black underwear and bras! My daughter covered my sons eyes and whispered to me "this is naughty". Were the dancers talented? Yes. Was the crowd happy? Yes. But for me it was just another example of our digression.

    Irish "Dance" Par Excellence

by Nanmb on 3/18/13North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North Charleston

Wonderfully performed, perfectly executed with high energy and enthusiasm. Talented mix of tap and ballet. The singer was ok, not a great voice, and her selection of songs were unknown. Since it was St Patrick's Day weekend, I hoped she would sing more traditional Irish ballads.
