  • Worth it, but lacking

    by Dio1628 on 10/8/09Double Door - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

They played the popular songs, but to me, not the one's the diehard fans would have liked to hear. There's no doubt every member of the band is talented! Just wish they would have played a few songs from albums other than 'Vivid'.

  • AWESOME!

I was excited it was Living Colour, first and fore most!!! When i found out where they were going to be, i knew it was gonna be beyond great!! All the original members rocked!!!!! After the show i got to meet the band!!! Soooooo nice!!! Got a pic too, with Muzz Skillings!!! My friend and I both agreed, one of the best live shows we've seen!

  • my favorite colour lives!

by packyman on 10/7/09Fine Line Music Cafe - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

an amazing show from 4 of the most talented musicians of my generation. 2 straight hours of music, and they never let up. no time to catch your breath. i was seriously drained. and when the show was over, all 4 guys came back out and signed autographs, posed for pics and were incredibly gracious and humble. vernon reid even had me (and others) sign his rain poncho.

My husband and I used to go see the band every time they came to town when their first few albums were out. --Yes, we were stalkers.--Anyway, we followed them through their first few albums, loving every minute of their high-powered live shows. Fast forward to twenty years later and here we are to see what the crew has been up to. The first part of their set consisted of all the old favorites from "Vivid," "Time's Up," and "Stain." --Calhoun wowed the audience with an extended drum solo that included triggered loops and lighted drumsticks.--The second half of their set, however, introduced us to selections from the new album ("Chair in the Doorway"). While I enjoyed the change of pace--from the hard-hitting groove-oriented rock to the more alternative Smashing Pumpkins-esque rock sound--I could tell that many of the die-hard core fans were not feeling it. I was certainly digging "Burned Bridges" and the dance-friendly "DecaDance," which allowed all of us to hustle in the aisles, even while the message of the song was dark and disturbing. Again, my husband and I both appreciated the new spin on their sound, which shows that they are growing into newer and equally "musical" directions. I dug it so much that I came home to buy the newest album. As for the live show, given what we had come to expect from their show--Corey Glover parading around in a Body Glove suit and slinging his dread-locked mohawk to and fro AND an incredible pyramid-like light rig and show--I was somewhat disappointed. While I know the venue was much smaller--the Magic Bag Theater--I also know that there was no glam--no visual appeal--to the show. Glover's drab gray prison-like jumpsuit and shaved head with a golf cap did nothing to stimulate the senses. Also, his movement was minimal, which made it less theatrical than we're used to. In fact, it was all about the music, which, in this case, wasn't bad, however, it is less than what we had come to expect from the live show. Overall, though, we felt that we got our money's worth. Plus, it was fun seeing all the fellow "old geezers" at the show, which reminded us of how long it's been since we've seen them. I would definitely recommend the show. The musical chops were there and there was musical growth that made the experience immensely enjoyable.

  • Living Colour brings it every time!

    by norin7 on 10/6/09Grog Shop - ClevelandRating: 5 out of 5

Living Colour continues to lay down amazing sets live. This is one of the most underappreciated basds in the last 20 years. Much more than just Cult of Personality. Reid, Calhoun, and Wimbish are elite musicians, fronted by the equally prolific Glover on vocals. Band played several classics and a lot from the new album. the new material was a sgoods as the older stuff, if not better live. Band mixed in a sweet cover of Papa Was a Rolling Stone! Dough Wimbish perfromed bass solo from the crowd, Will Calhoun' mind blowing beats, Vernon absolutely destroyed his guitar and Glover was full of soul power.

  • Living Colour - brilliant performance !!!

by Jezz on 10/6/09House of Blues Orlando - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

Living colour gave a superb faultless performance, I loved it - it really brought the albums to life. In fact their live act in my opinion succeeded in making the album music more vital and lively - great, i can't recommend them more.

  • Living Color was Awesome

by CeeDawg on 10/6/09House of Blues Orlando - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

Living Color has always been an underrated band. The live show in such an intimate setting was unreal.

  • Living Colour played up to the intimate D D crowd

by GhostNote on 10/6/09Double Door - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

What an excellant $20 show. Corey and the band seemed to feed off the crowd and belted out a great performance of old and new songs, including 2 covers. Vocals and harmonies were top notch. Hope they come back soon.

  • Living Colour Still Hot ! after 21 years.

    by Cameo77 on 10/5/09Double Door - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

From the opening of Middleman, to the closing encore of jimi Hendrix Crosstown Traffic, Who Knows ? and What's your favorite color ? Living Colour was vary vivid and in as they say in the business " In rare form " I Have not seen these guys since 1989' at the Riviera Theatre, i think they were here in 2002' at the Metro, but i missed them but they were well worth the wait of course they have more songs, now and are as polished, as any band can be no disrespect,to Muzz Skillings, but Doug Wimbish is a big inprovement on bass he kept the bass in our face all night Vernon did what he does Cory's voice, is much stronger than before and Will's drumming, was banging . Musician wise L.C. can match up with any band dead or alive. The Version of Papa was a rolling stone really took the crowd by surprise, and everybody loved it the songs, from the new CD they played were hot , a lot of people did'nt know the songs being new, but they still felt them . I Recorded the show last night i was far away from the stage so i think the audio came out better than video i have'nt put it on the tv yet even if it turns out bad i just ordered Living Colour Live in Paris DVD, and i was there last night .

  • Verne Rocks!

by SSLR on 10/5/09Double Door - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Okay, the band sounded great, the set list was good except I would like to have heard Nothingness. Rarely can a band keep up the melody - especially accross vocals - and still rock it up to eleven.

  • older living color

    by tonybikes1 on 10/5/09Double Door - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Great set list, their classics plus Papa was a rollin' stone and Crosstown traffic covers. Vernon had some tech issues with his guitars thaty slowed things down but they got back on track. Still plays super fast leads.

  • I had an AWESUM Time!!!!!

by Rockinsistah on 10/5/09Double Door - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

The opening Band was a good warm-up. I enjoyed the small venue for an up close and personal experience.

  • Spectacular

by Sundae on 10/5/09Double Door - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Great crowd. They rocked, Corey Glover is such a good performer, Vernon Reid is one of the best. We had a great night!

  • I was super disippointed

    by evanss56 on 10/5/09Double Door - ChicagoRating: 1 out of 5

The instruments were WAY TOO loud. I think they need a new stage crew. The performance was also pretty sloppy. I know it was a live performance, but it sounded like ameteurs trying to play songs from the Living Colour debut album. I left 4 songs into it, and I used to be a big fan! :(

  • the most important band out there

by JacqueFrost on 10/5/09Double Door - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

They are the black Led Zeppelin. Instead of rehashing blues lyrics about lemons and pies; Living Colour sing about social issues that impact everyone. None of the self-indulgent shredders can touch vernon reid's style and honesty. The question is why aren't they as popular as U2 or Coldplay? Is it a racial thang? Is it because they demand the listener to think instead just feel? Oh the mystery. I am thrilled that the show was sold out and it was terrific to see them in smaller venue.

  • Living Colour amazingly still current and fresh!

by dpkone on 10/5/09Double Door - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

The old stuff rocked as well. Vernon Reid is an incredible guitar player and Glover's voice was as strong and powerful as ever. They should have played a large venue like the Vic or the Riv.

  • Living Colour was fantastic!

    by Gatchman1 on 10/5/09Double Door - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen this band multiple times in the 80's and early 90's, last nights show blew away any expectation that I had for the show. Powerful, soulful, and really, really amazing. Vernon Reid and Doug Wimbish are both virtuoso's, the fact that they are on stage at the same time melting faces is awesome. Wil Calhoun drums like no one else providing a bottom end to the band that is Zepplin like. Cory's vocals have such range that I believe he can sing anything he wants to and it will be amazing. Together, they make one of the best bands around. See the show if they come to your area, I pray that they come back to Chicago after they go overseas. I love you guys.

  • LIving Colour was outstanding!

by Anonymous on 10/5/09Double Door - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I've seen them before, and they are just as great now as they were years ago. They did a great review of all their material throughout the years. Very enjoyable and I look forward to them coming back through again.

  • Exceptional from begining to end!

by PaulPR on 10/5/09Double Door - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

A couple of months ago my wife, my daughter and I were up in Wicker Park and we happened to be walking by the Double Door. I glanced and the upcoming shows and noticed Living Colour would be playing. I immediately told my wife I had to go and mentioned it to three other friends who also wanted to attend. I am certain that I speak for all of them in that we greatly enjoy and respect Living Colour's music and wanted to see their work performed live mainly for nostalgic purposes. It has been quite awhile since these guys have put anything new out. While they did play most of their top songs from their first three albums as well as a solid middle lineup of new songs, what we witnessed was nothing nostalgic. These guys are all about expanding and growing in what they do best, rocking with unfettered abandon. Band members of Living Colour have aged some, but they clearly have not put their instruments down. Their sound is explosive and soulful. They played a strong two hour set and then played another half hour encore. Double Door was packed front to back to witness Vernon Reed shred his guitar (literally at one point, brief guitar issue after a broken string), he has only gotten better and in my opinion is one of the best. Lead singer Cory Glover's voice was fantastic. There was brief discussion among my friends and me about whether Cory would be able to hit the wide range of vocal notes that he has been known for in the past, particularly the high ones. The answer is yes and it seemed easy for him to do so. The drummer Will Calhoun played a fifteen minute drum solo that had everyone transfixed and spell bound. How cool would it be to see him and the late John Bonham go head to head, hard to say who would win? Will mixed in a variety of drum styles into a cohesive unrestrained sound. It was really one of those moments that are left to better writers to describe. I am just glad that I got to see it. One of the highlights of the show was bassist Muzz Skilling’s getting up close and personal with the crowd. He came down on the floor and proceeded to show off his skills, which was a bit of a challenge since people were standing shoulder to shoulder, but the Red Sea un-reluctantly parted for him. That was very cool and much appreciated. Has to be the best show I have seen in a long time from anyone and while I expected a fun show, I had no idea that they were there to pleasantly cut and shred the crowd with an onslaught of sound. Thus the butcher’s apron that Cory Glover wore through out the show.

  • raw power pummeling the senses

absolutely amazing display of lyrical genious, lightening fast guitar, thunderously funky bass, and rivoting percussion for almost 3 hours!!!!!
