Lissie Maurus was raised in the riverside town of Rock Island, IL, and she drew upon those blue-collar Midwestern origins to create her own form of indie folk music. The granddaughter of an international barbershop quarter champion, she grew up singing in theater productions, eventually picking up the guitar and playing her own songs at local coffeeshops as a teenager. Lissie was also something of a rebel; she got thrown out of high school during her senior year, spent a brief period at Colorado State University, relocated to Paris for a semester, and eventually ditched college altogether to pursue her music career. Returning to the U.S., Lissie headed west and settled in Los Angeles, where she became a fixture on the local venue circuit and landed a national tour opening for Lenny Kravitz.
Lissie's music had already appeared on shows like The O.C., Veronica Mars, and House by the time she moved to California, and she widened her fan base by launching a weekly songwriter's circle at her local bar, Crane's Hollywood Tavern, and releasing a self-titled EP. Things truly began picking up speed in 2009, though, when Lissie released the dusky Why You Runnin' and toured the country alongside Ray LaMontagne. Part of the Why You Runnin' EP had been recorded in the U.K., and she returned there in early 2010 to promote the release of her first full-length album, Catching a Tiger. Although she also made several appearances in America -- including a standout performance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival and a single date with the rebooted Lilith Fair -- Lissie spent most of her time touring Europe, where her debut record was released in June. Lissie put on an amazing show. I would highly recommend seeing her live if you have the chance!
If you weren't there, well sorry, you missed something special. The evening started with the sweet sound of Chase Cohl, a Toronto native, transplanted to Laurel Canyon. Beautiful voice, thoughtful songs and a perfect balance to the powerful Lissie, who rocked out the crowd and the building. Was an amazing night of music!
Sounds great. Great opener. Previewed some new material, which sounded good. New record out early next year.
This was the second Lissie show i've had the pleasure of attending, and the first time I've seen her perform acoustic. The first two acts were really good, but she was breathtaking and the energy from the crowd was great too! Highly recommend attending her shows any chance you get.
I expected to see Lissie with her band. Instead, she was by herself, singing and playing acoustic guitar. She pulled it off though, with a great show. She sang really well and powerfully. ..Unlike most female singers today, she totally didn't care about looking good, just listen to her voice!
What an amazing performance! Loved the opening performances by Chase Cohl and Tyler Lyle. Lissie was even better live. I didn't imagine it would be so good. I can't get enough of her voice and her personality. Shes just a lovely human being that sings from her soul. And someone got proposed to in the middle of one of her songs. This was my first Lissie concert but it won't be my last. Thank you so much Lissie for coming to boston. We love you!!
Lissie started off with high energy and just got better! Her voice was amazing and the musicians in her band were incredible! Who plays bass while playing drums with both feet! The guitarist was so talented and the other drummer/keyboard/other cool instrument was also great. What a fun concert!!
LIssie put on a great performance and was completely engaged for the entire show! What a terrific voice and great stage presence! This was our first experience with her music, and my wife and I are now fans!
This is the 3rd time I have seen Lissie in the Twin Cities-love that she keeps coming back! The Fitzgerald Theater was a nice venue, although, I would have preferred not being in a seat. Most of Lissie's music is upbeat and she rocks out on stage, so to just sit quietly and watch was a let down. But, not her fault, so I am still giving the show 5 stars, she was amazing and her voice was fantastic and the band is great too. She engages with the audience and has such great energy. Love her!
I can't quite figure out how this singer/songwriter and her great band are not a really big deal - I would think her stuff would be all over the radio, etc. I feel lucky to have found her on Guitar Center Sessions, so I can continue to follow her career. She's a must-see with her great songs, as well as her great take on covers...and that VOICE. Unbelievable.
Awesome show, the band had great stage presence. Lissie's voice is incredible.
Lissie has great songs and puts on an energetic and unforgettable performance.
Every time I see Lissie she gets better, like she's really grown into her voice. The Fitz is a great place to see live music and the sound is really good.
Lissie never disappoints! She has such soul...she is the real deal. The venue at the Fitzgerald was beautiful but the crowd actually sat in their seats for the majority of the concert which was a bummer. My group stood off in the side aisle...how can you sit through a Lissie concert?!?!
Wow, the show was absolutely out of this world! I had very, very high expectations before going and was so excited to see her perform, especially at the Fitzgerald. When I learned that she would be performing at the Fitzgerald I didn't hesitate to buy tickets! The sound was like no other facility. Lissie and her band brought the house down. She completely rocks and being in the small, intimate setting was the best concert that I have ever been to. I went with my husband and he was in complete aw over the talent that we witnessed! Loved, loved, loved it!!! she brought the entire crowd to their feet and rocked the house. It lave me goose-bumps. She then went to the rear of the state and took a picture of everyone rocking! It was fantastic.
Lissie put out her best energy, I've seen her twice before. Unfortunately the St. Paul crowd held true to their stoic Minnesota selves and sat for the whole concert, with arms crossed and barely a toe tap. Embarrassing and I want to apologize to Lissie! There were a few of us who tried but just couldn't get the others to move.
I saw Lissie one year ago at a Cities 97 Thursday afternoon event, which was mediocre at best. That preview was a far cry from what her singing talent really is. She totally demonstrated what she's made of at this recent concert. The concert really was phenomenal. She displayed fabulous musicianship. I like her quirky arm motion and leg lift, but mostly her powerful voice and storytelling songs. Her songs and voice rocked the place. P.S. Gotta love the bass playing, vocal back-up, drummer!!! Skills man!!!!
Lissie was amazing. She put on a great show, the setting was intimate and super fun.
Lissie has an UNBELIEVABLE voice and incredible energy throughout her performance. I would see this concert a hundred times over.
