About

Lissie Maurus was raised in the riverside town of Rock Island, IL, and she drew upon those blue-collar Midwestern origins to create her own form of indie folk music. The granddaughter of an international barbershop quarter champion, she grew up singing in theater productions, eventually picking up the guitar and playing her own songs at local coffeeshops as a teenager. Lissie was also something of a rebel; she got thrown out of high school during her senior year, spent a brief period at Colorado State University, relocated to Paris for a semester, and eventually ditched college altogether to pursue her music career. Returning to the U.S., Lissie headed west and settled in Los Angeles, where she became a fixture on the local venue circuit and landed a national tour opening for Lenny Kravitz.

Lissie's music had already appeared on shows like The O.C., Veronica Mars, and House by the time she moved to California, and she widened her fan base by launching a weekly songwriter's circle at her local bar, Crane's Hollywood Tavern, and releasing a self-titled EP. Things truly began picking up speed in 2009, though, when Lissie released the dusky Why You Runnin' and toured the country alongside Ray LaMontagne. Part of the Why You Runnin' EP had been recorded in the U.K., and she returned there in early 2010 to promote the release of her first full-length album, Catching a Tiger. Although she also made several appearances in America -- including a standout performance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival and a single date with the rebooted Lilith Fair -- Lissie spent most of her time touring Europe, where her debut record was released in June. An American release followed in August, courtesy of Fat Possum Records. ~ Andrew Leahey, Rovi

Lissie, The Pierces, and George Stanford rocked!!!

by LissieFan on 1/17/11The Music Box - Hollywood

First let me just say this concert was really cool beause George brought Lissie in on one of his songs, and Lissie brought the Pierces on during a couple of her numbers. I love it when artists collaborate! George Stanford was pretty good. I'm not a big fan of Americana, but he has a great voice and a rocking band. I'd never heard of The Pierces until this concert, and WOW, I was impressed! Something about those two sisters is just hypnotizing to watch. Two very old souls with sexy moves and a sexy sound. Their music meshes really well with Lissie's. Love that they're from Alabama. In concert, their songs have a sweet heavy beat, what I like to call the Southern Stomp! Haha. I got their EP...their songs were mixed a bit different. I think I like them better live...so cool and so worth it! Lastly, Lissie. She was just amazing. No, phenomenal. Such a cool lady. She's very laid back in her intros, and her songs are always changed up from the way they are on the cd. She's a singer who can actually sing every note and more live, AND play the guitar and rock out. When she finished her set, the crowd started shouting her name in rhythm. How cool is that? In fact, what could be cooler? Um...cooler was when she came back and broke out a Kid Cudi cover!!!!! I would definitely see Lissie and the Pierces in concert again.

    Lissie was amazing!!

by Shnay on 1/17/11The Music Box - Hollywood

Lissie was incredible and the whole show was just awesome, but The Music Box was WAYYYY to hot, it was as if they had the heat on. There was no reason for it to be that warm, and everyone was complaining about it so that took away what would have been a perfect show. Figure the temperature out!

Lissie brings such energy and such a positive vibe to a live show. Really special. The clarity and power of her vocals is a joy, and the lead guitarist executes beautifully, the background vocal harmonies right on. Highly recommended.

If you like Lissie's music. You will enjoy her live. In my opinion she sounds better live than recorded. I would recommend highly.
