About

Lissie Maurus was raised in the riverside town of Rock Island, IL, and she drew upon those blue-collar Midwestern origins to create her own form of indie folk music. The granddaughter of an international barbershop quarter champion, she grew up singing in theater productions, eventually picking up the guitar and playing her own songs at local coffeeshops as a teenager. Lissie was also something of a rebel; she got thrown out of high school during her senior year, spent a brief period at Colorado State University, relocated to Paris for a semester, and eventually ditched college altogether to pursue her music career. Returning to the U.S., Lissie headed west and settled in Los Angeles, where she became a fixture on the local venue circuit and landed a national tour opening for Lenny Kravitz.

Lissie's music had already appeared on shows like The O.C., Veronica Mars, and House by the time she moved to California, and she widened her fan base by launching a weekly songwriter's circle at her local bar, Crane's Hollywood Tavern, and releasing a self-titled EP. Things truly began picking up speed in 2009, though, when Lissie released the dusky Why You Runnin' and toured the country alongside Ray LaMontagne. Part of the Why You Runnin' EP had been recorded in the U.K., and she returned there in early 2010 to promote the release of her first full-length album, Catching a Tiger. Although she also made several appearances in America -- including a standout performance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival and a single date with the rebooted Lilith Fair -- Lissie spent most of her time touring Europe, where her debut record was released in June. An American release followed in August, courtesy of Fat Possum Records. ~ Andrew Leahey, Rovi

    Always brings her A-game

by John on 1/26/19Port City Music Hall - Portland

Lissie is a rare talent that is both a top notch songwriter, and a brilliant vocalist/musician. And to top things off, she also has a beautiful spirit underneath all of that talent. Anyone who is smart and/or lucky enough to see one of her shows will always have a great time.

    Lissie just keeps getting better.

by Wishyouwereherebaby on 5/5/18Teragram Ballroom - Los Angeles

Extraordinarily good performance with her new band. The new songs we're good overall; a couple of them were a bit soporific, but the good ones made up for it. As usual Lissie gives it everything and she leaves you smiling and fully satisfied. She came down into the audience and reminded us that she is humble and one of us. Her voice is unrivaled and she sings with a passion that reminds you that live talent is as much about passion and energy as it is about talent. The venue you was perfect for her. The backup group was very solid, though not as talented as her old team. Mixing and Lighting were first class.

    Very Intimate

    by Casserole93 on 1/29/18Icehouse - Minneapolis

I’ve seen Lissie a total of 5 times. Three of those 5 were at the Icehouse. This setting is amazing because you can get so close to the stage and the venues has an intimate feeling. Lissie’s performances are always perfection. She is a true musician and loves to bring other very talented musicians with her. She never disappoints and can make anyone feel like she is their best friend.

by Capricorn30 on 10/8/16Cedar Cultural Center - Minneapolis

She played songs from all her albums, she sound just like her albums when she plays live. I don't know of another artist who can play a whole set with just their guitar and should that amazing. I think her new album My Wild West is wonderful.

    Simply Amazing Show

by Mariucci1984 on 5/3/16Bowery Ballroom - New York

Great show in a very great place. Small club, great atmosphere. Went there during a holiday trip from Germany, because I missed Lissie`s concert in Cologne/Germany a few weeks ago. Amazing choice of songs (good mix of all of here three albums), powerful voice and very enthusiastic performance. Lissie is one of the best live performers I have seen during the last years.

    Lissie in Brooklyn

by JRW53 on 4/23/16Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

In her music and her style, Lissie demonstrated both high energy and soul-searching that, in my opinion, sets her apart from most singers and songwriters. At first, she said nothing to the audience, and just played her songs. But after about four songs, she started talking and interacting so that she was very real to everyone. She even went into the crowd for several minutes and had many people dancing with her to an upbeat song. At another point, the band left the stage and she went back to her musical roots, using only her acoustic guitar to accompany her singing. Besides telling the story that inspired her to write "Daughters", she talked about her own journey to California and then back to the Midwest, making everything feel very personal. It was a great performance, and I am sure almost anyone would have enjoyed it.

Reunited and it feels so good.

by RaeRaRiley on 4/22/16Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

The last time I saw Lissie was hot on the heels of her singing "Everywhere I Go" with Ellie Goulding at Great Escape in 2010. She was also killing it virally with her cover of Kid Cudi's "Pursuit of Happiness", and I was falling so hard in love with her. This time, more than 5 years later was so very different, but not at all disappointing. The majority of her songs were from her most recent album: My Wild West, but also got around to the staples: When I'm Alone, Why You Runnin, Mississippi, and In Sleep (which she killed in her first song after coming back for encore). She even had a dance/mosh moment in the middle of the crowd, and woke up the romantic and dreamy crowd. Much to my surprise and delight, she closed out one hell of a show with Pursuit of Happiness. I've loved her. I love her. I will always love her. And I'll go see her whenever, wherever again and again.... and again.

Amazing Energy, Amazing Voice, Amazing Music

by rikemiley on 4/22/16Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

This show was nothing short of spectacular. Lissie is clearly a passionate person who cares so much about sharing her music with her fans. She brings a wonderful energy to stage, matched only by her incredible voice and songwriting skills. Her backing band was also fantastic and the whole night was simply magical.

    Can't stop moving and singing!

by Eltech on 4/22/16Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

Lissie jams out. The crowd feels involved and loved and she feeds off that energy. It's the end of her tour and she continues to impress and try new things to please the fans. You can tell she's having a good time and wants everyone in the room to feel something. Each song can bring out a different emotion. If you don't see her live than you're just silly.

I've casually followed Lissie's career for the last 5 or 6 years, but had never seen her live before. I could not have been more blown away. Her voice is so much bigger, richer, and more complex than I think a recording can ever capture. It's like she's got a gospel choir sitting on her tonsils. Her energy is great and it was a really fun evening. Set list was mostly off of her current and first albums.

    Lissie was fantastic!

    by 1Joseph1 on 4/20/16Royale Boston - Boston

One of my favorite live acts. I catch all of her shows in the Boston area. Lissie is passionate about her music and she really seems to enjoy performing. She's become much more engaged with the audience and even came off the stage into the crowd for one number. A grear setlist, but I was surprised that weren't more songs from her new "My Wild West" album. It's a shame that Lissie remains a relative unknown as she has several radio friendly songs. On the plus side, her lack of mainstream coverage allows me to keep seeing her at smaller, more intimate venues.

    Lissie at the Royal

by GuitarPianoPlay on 4/19/16Royale Boston - Boston

Besides being drop-dead gorgeous this girl can sing! Now backed by Skrizzly Adams she has a rockin' sound and terrific stage presence. Her song writing skills are incredible, both moving and thoughtful. I hope that the American audience finally gets what Norway, Denmark and the UK have known for several years...this girl is great and totally worth seeing!

I've seen Lissie before and she was amazing as always. She gives everything she has up there and came into the crowd for a song. Loved it!
