About

Lila Downs is the daughter of a Mixtec Indian woman, Anastasia Sanchez,  who ran away from her village at 19 to sing in Mexico City cantinas and a Minnesota-born, Scottish-American film & photography professor, Allen Downs,  who saw her singing and fell in love.  Lila Downs was born in the Oaxacan mountain town of Tlaxiaco, 7,000 feet up in the heavens. The first songs she remembers are her mother singing Lola Beltrán's heartfelt rancheras, and her father singing Woody Guthrie's ''This Land Is Your Land.'' Her border-blurring, multicultural upbringing infused Downs with a firm world view in support of the disenfranchised working classes and an aesthetic vision that embraces cross-cultural pollinations.

As a result Downs has become one of the most innovative exponents of Mesoamerican music on both sides of the border. Her lyrics are high-minded and sentient and her sound is all encompassing. By drawing on a pan-Latin palette of music as well as American folk, jazz, blues and rock, Downs and her worldly band of kindred spirits, La Misteriosa, have won accolades and a devoted following of world music fans. Known for her smoky voice and magnetic performances, Downs has created a unique body of work that defies categorization in any single genre.

With eight studio albums and one live album released since 1999, Lila Downs has long been recognized by the music industry.  She received a Latin Grammy for the 2004 release “Una Sangre,” and a Grammy nomination for 2008’s “Shake Away,” as well as various performance awards from around the world.  Her 2011 release,  "Pecados y Milagros" garnered both a Latin Grammy for Best Folk Album, and a Grammy for Best Regional Mexican Music Album.  It also  hit #1 on the Mexican music charts immediately after its initial release, and reached Double Platinum status there.

In addition to headlining venues all over the world, Lila Downs has performed at major festivals and events including  WOMAD; Live Earth; Montreal Jazz Festival, San Francisco Jazz Festival, the World Sacred Music Festival - appearing with such luminaries as the Dalai Lama;  the Latino Inaugural Ball for President Barack Obama, the Bicentenario de Mexico, the opening ceremonies for the 2011 Pan American Games, and the 2012 Latin Grammys on Univision.

Lila is a great performer. She is so passionate and likes to have fun on the stage. The music was wonderful! People were dancing in their seats. The venue was very nice and clean. Since it was indoors, there was no smoking and no smell of weed.

  • Great Show

by Gloria on 5/4/22Luckman Fine Arts Complex - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Lila never disappoints...her music, her band and her outfits are always on point! Plus the Luckman is a fairly small venue so anywhere you sit is a good seat (but you shouldn't be sitting while at her concert...you should be up and dancing).

  • Lila’s voice is just beautiful

by Cha cha on 5/3/22Centennial Hall - TucsonRating: 5 out of 5

The music was amazing and Lila’s performance was explosive, passionate and heartwarming. I actually wept when she sang her “tree” story…so touching.

  • Lila Downs at Luckman Center in Cal State LA

by Raul63 on 5/3/22Luckman Fine Arts Complex - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Great performance and great enthusiastic audience. In addition to the great singing by Lila Downs, she had excellent musicians supporting her and lots of folklorico dancers accompanying her.

  • Increible!

by rcu on 5/2/22Centennial Hall - TucsonRating: 5 out of 5

Lila continues to amaze! Her talent and ability to connect with her audience and beyond is one of her many gifts. Her voice is healing and insightful. Viva Lila!

  • I love Lila! The hall was just too loud!

by Thomaz on 5/1/22Centennial Hall - TucsonRating: 4 out of 5

Decibel levels were dangerously loud. I wear hearing aids and had to turn them off. I would definitely see her again however, never again at Centennial Hall!

  • Marvelous !!!

    by Big O on 5/1/22Centennial Hall - TucsonRating: 5 out of 5

Lila's energy in her performance was genuine and uplifting . The stage background settings for each piece she and her band performed were meaningful themes that depicted the human condition and sentiment rooted in the lyrics of the songs. Viva Lila Downs !!!

Ive waited years to be in the right place and time experience Lila Downs and so had the other 5,000 or so there...and it was glorious. She is an immense talent as is the ensemble and from the opening to the encores embedded in my soul.

  • Great 29th anniversary gift! We had such fun!

by Nina on 5/1/22Centennial Hall - TucsonRating: 5 out of 5

Such a great experience. She is high energy and so funny. The musicians look like they enjoy what they are doing and they are each so talented. Miss. Downs is a unique artist, her mastery of Mexican as well as other Latin countries regional genres is unprecedented and as if this was not enough she will than gift the audience with an English language interpretation. Her privileged voice and extensive range provide such delightful harmony that added to her emotional and heart felt rendition creates an unparalleled experience. When Ms. Downs takes the stage she captures the hearts, minds and imaginations of her public. Thank you for making such a joy possible, for us it required an eight hour drive total and well worth it. CONGRATULATIONS on your choice of artist.

  • Lila Downs NEVER disappoints

by Jay on 5/1/22Centennial Hall - TucsonRating: 5 out of 5

She is consistently amazing. Her vocals are rich - just as much as the culture that she brings to the show. AMAZING! Cannot wait to see her again.

  • Great show but short

by Gardenia del jardin on 5/1/22Centennial Hall - TucsonRating: 4 out of 5

I love Lila! the show was great, perfect sound, lights, etc but I think it was too short and I didn't like that they didn't have a group or band that opened the show.

  • The Magnificence of Lila Downs

by Robert on 5/1/22Centennial Hall - TucsonRating: 5 out of 5

Having listened to Lila Downs recordings, I already knew she was an exceptional artist. But seeing her in person in Tucson — with her extraordinary team of musicians— was a revelation. Besides having a powerful voice, she builds a powerful, emotional bond with the audience. It’s easy to understand how she’s built a loyal fan base, and it cuts across every demographic. As the music and the rhythm builds, no one can resist jumping to their feet and dancing in the aisles. By all means, buy Lila’s recordings. But if you have the opportunity to see her perform live, don’t miss it. Be sure to purchase a ticket. You will experience pure musical joy.

  • Concert fabulous, venue-scamming waitresses

by Jen on 4/23/22Sony Hall - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Concert was amazing. No complaints, wish it lasted longer. Venue is sit-down dining and drinks. Prices are crazy, but you order and enjoy. At end of night waitress shows a total for table, not receipts and states its better for them if tip is cash. Well once you pay and are out of the building, email receipt shows the "suggested 18% tip" is part of total. So little lady got over 40% when adding that all together. Not cool.
