About

Lila Downs is the daughter of a Mixtec Indian woman, Anastasia Sanchez,  who ran away from her village at 19 to sing in Mexico City cantinas and a Minnesota-born, Scottish-American film & photography professor, Allen Downs,  who saw her singing and fell in love.  Lila Downs was born in the Oaxacan mountain town of Tlaxiaco, 7,000 feet up in the heavens. The first songs she remembers are her mother singing Lola Beltrán's heartfelt rancheras, and her father singing Woody Guthrie's ''This Land Is Your Land.'' Her border-blurring, multicultural upbringing infused Downs with a firm world view in support of the disenfranchised working classes and an aesthetic vision that embraces cross-cultural pollinations.

As a result Downs has become one of the most innovative exponents of Mesoamerican music on both sides of the border. Her lyrics are high-minded and sentient and her sound is all encompassing. By drawing on a pan-Latin palette of music as well as American folk, jazz, blues and rock, Downs and her worldly band of kindred spirits, La Misteriosa, have won accolades and a devoted following of world music fans. Known for her smoky voice and magnetic performances, Downs has created a unique body of work that defies categorization in any single genre.

With eight studio albums and one live album released since 1999, Lila Downs has long been recognized by the music industry.  She received a Latin Grammy for the 2004 release “Una Sangre,” and a Grammy nomination for 2008’s “Shake Away,” as well as various performance awards from around the world.  Her 2011 release,  "Pecados y Milagros" garnered both a Latin Grammy for Best Folk Album, and a Grammy for Best Regional Mexican Music Album.  It also  hit #1 on the Mexican music charts immediately after its initial release, and reached Double Platinum status there.

In addition to headlining venues all over the world, Lila Downs has performed at major festivals and events including  WOMAD; Live Earth; Montreal Jazz Festival, San Francisco Jazz Festival, the World Sacred Music Festival - appearing with such luminaries as the Dalai Lama;  the Latino Inaugural Ball for President Barack Obama, the Bicentenario de Mexico, the opening ceremonies for the 2011 Pan American Games, and the 2012 Latin Grammys on Univision.

this was more than a concert-- it was a show with beautiful ever changing outfits, traditional Mexican dancers, with a full stage of musicians. Oh, did I forget to mention that Lila is a gifted treasure that, at times, seems to break the sound barrier. What a powerhouse voice! Highly recommended

  • Energetic show

    by S. M. on 4/22/22Sony Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

This was the fifth time going to a Lila Downs concert show. One time actually at the Guelaguetza in Oaxaca, which was a full on show. Sony Theater in NYC was a much smaller venue with cabaret style seating for about 500 people who were treated to a great sounding event. Lila's charisma carries the show for those of us who do not understand enough Spanish to know what she is actually singing. Why go then, well her presence is felt, her band is fantastic, she brings out folkloric dancers and has videos playing that help you understand the sense of her songs. An 1 1/2 show flew by and people were up and dancing before the show was over.

Lila Downs has a voice that moved everyone at the concert. I am so glad to have heard that glorious voice. Amazing range of songs and instrumentals. The group of women mariachis was wonderful and I would love to attend one of their concerts.

  • Tears of Chile

    by D. n. on 10/15/19Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Ms. Downs brought her whole soul and heart to that performance. She sang the older Mexican songs that my brother In law Charlie, played on his guitar to my sister Dolores, who are both in the spiritual world. I cried a good cry of memories that I will always have withe me. The all Womyn Marahcis and dancers were icing on the cake.. VIVA LA RAZA!!

  • Fabulous!!!!

    by R. W. on 8/16/19Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

Lila Downs is a marvelous performer. With her band she explored folk songs and other music from her native Mexico. Lively and energetic, she held the crowd in her hands as she toured through her music. Some of her band members even danced! We both had a great time!

by mkbruin on 10/2/17Dolby Theatre - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

We are Lila fans. We have been going to her concerts for many years and always love the wonderful performance she always gives. I would have liked to hear more of her older music but I still loved the show. Her performance of Kuku Rookoo ku Paloma was fabulous and got a standing ovation. I missed seeing her husband this time Paul Cohen. Hope he is OK.
