About

Lila Downs is the daughter of a Mixtec Indian woman, Anastasia Sanchez,  who ran away from her village at 19 to sing in Mexico City cantinas and a Minnesota-born, Scottish-American film & photography professor, Allen Downs,  who saw her singing and fell in love.  Lila Downs was born in the Oaxacan mountain town of Tlaxiaco, 7,000 feet up in the heavens. The first songs she remembers are her mother singing Lola Beltrán's heartfelt rancheras, and her father singing Woody Guthrie's ''This Land Is Your Land.'' Her border-blurring, multicultural upbringing infused Downs with a firm world view in support of the disenfranchised working classes and an aesthetic vision that embraces cross-cultural pollinations.

As a result Downs has become one of the most innovative exponents of Mesoamerican music on both sides of the border. Her lyrics are high-minded and sentient and her sound is all encompassing. By drawing on a pan-Latin palette of music as well as American folk, jazz, blues and rock, Downs and her worldly band of kindred spirits, La Misteriosa, have won accolades and a devoted following of world music fans. Known for her smoky voice and magnetic performances, Downs has created a unique body of work that defies categorization in any single genre.

With eight studio albums and one live album released since 1999, Lila Downs has long been recognized by the music industry.  She received a Latin Grammy for the 2004 release “Una Sangre,” and a Grammy nomination for 2008’s “Shake Away,” as well as various performance awards from around the world.  Her 2011 release,  "Pecados y Milagros" garnered both a Latin Grammy for Best Folk Album, and a Grammy for Best Regional Mexican Music Album.  It also  hit #1 on the Mexican music charts immediately after its initial release, and reached Double Platinum status there.

In addition to headlining venues all over the world, Lila Downs has performed at major festivals and events including  WOMAD; Live Earth; Montreal Jazz Festival, San Francisco Jazz Festival, the World Sacred Music Festival - appearing with such luminaries as the Dalai Lama;  the Latino Inaugural Ball for President Barack Obama, the Bicentenario de Mexico, the opening ceremonies for the 2011 Pan American Games, and the 2012 Latin Grammys on Univision.

  • Short Show

    by SE on 10/19/23Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 2 out of 5

We were looking forward to the concert. It started late and with one encore barley ran for an hour. Given the ticket price we were disappointed with the length of the show. The venue is also adding "service"charges to their bar that they hadn't included before.

  • TOO SHORT

    by KARLITA on 10/19/23Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 1 out of 5

C’ON 1 HOUR AND 5 MINUTES CONCERT? REALLY? VERY DISAPPOINTED, PLUS THE TICKETS EXPENSIVE.” RIDICULOUS.” WASTE MY MONEY AND TIME. 😡😡😡

  • Great performance

    by Lily on 10/19/23Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

It was a great show. Lila Downs had me singing and dancing in my chair. It was a good selection of songs. I enjoyed every minute of it and so did my kids.

  • Way too short.

    by Me on 10/19/23Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 3 out of 5

Lila was amazing like always, but her show felt rushed. She sang only for 1 hour and 15 minutes . If that pattern continues I won't go to see her again.

  • Lila downs mexicos best

    by Moi on 10/19/23Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Lila downs is the only singer left that is authentic Mexican music singer. We witness a very good concert the last time I heard an authentic singer was when Vicente Fernandez and Rocio durcal came to San Jose Ca. Lila is to me the best women Mexican music singer there is now in Mexico

  • An evening of pure joy with Lila Downs

by Robert on 9/24/23Sony Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

If you love great music and passionate singing, then you must see Lila Downs and her amazing musicians. Having seen Lila perform before in a larger venue in Tucson, it was pure joy getting to see her perform in the relatively intimate SONY Hall in New York City. The audience was filled with fans from across NYC, many of whom were originally from Mexico. You understand why Lila is an international star.

  • Amazing and soulful experience

by Charlie on 9/21/23Sony Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

There are performances that feel transformative, taking you through authentic artistry to an immersive experience of the world as a bigger and more magical place. Lila Downs did that for some thousand people in her performance on Monday. The music was inspiring, the band was tight, and Ms Downs poured out her heart with love for each person in that big yet intimate room. I will remember it forever.

  • Very short show

by Eva Edith on 12/16/22Orpheum Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

Lila Downs and crew played the Orpheum theater. She has a marvelous voice and sang her songs and covers, along with dancers and other performers that really enhance the overall show. The vibe of the show was like extremely talented jam session, like you’ve been invited to a private show. The vibe was amazing intimate and fun. The only problem is that she barely played more than an hour, like an hour and change and that’s short. So when she walked off stage without really mentioning that it was ending it really dampened the mood. Like the audience surprised like what do you mean that’s it? I’ve seen Lila Downs before and that show at the Santa Barbara bowl was longer and more fleshed out. This seemed like a dress rehearsal. Also not her fault but the Orpheum theater is chaotic and people are always coming and going so all videos have black bobbing heads moving through them.

  • Great

by TeraMayan on 11/17/22Orpheum Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

It was my first time seeing Lila live and she's amazing. What a voice.

  • Outstanding presentation - short concert

    by S. Z. on 11/14/22Orpheum Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

Lila Downs is a hurricane of talents! Show is excellent, the dancers and musicians are outstanding. Our only complaint is that concert in L.A Orpheum theater was extremely short compared to others we've attended. Missed a lot of expected songs :(

  • A cultural feast.

by Maria Isabel on 11/13/22Orpheum Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

This was quite a show! Lila Downs was extraordonary; what a level of energy and great artistry and creativity. A 10+. There is plenty of room for improvement from the theater's administration; for a long time plenty ofpeople were comming in late, disturbing with the noise and covering the view. Not acceptable!

  • Incredible

by Anne on 11/13/22Orpheum Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Beautiful, colorful, exceptional and excellent. Very beautiful theater and and amazing show. I loved it so much.

  • It was too short

by Cristina on 11/13/22Orpheum Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

It was a fun and great concert, but it was too short. I would like it to be longer and to sing what everyone was asking for, “La llorona”.

  • She was amazing but seats were horrible 😤

by Loopz on 11/13/22Orpheum Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Lila Downs has an amazing and powerful voice 🎤 Her show was indecible! The Orpheum theater seats are horrible! You feel like sardines packs in a room! It was so tight that the person I sat next to his arm was on top of mine, I couldn’t sit all the way back because we didn’t fit! I had to lean forward the whole time. EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE 😣

  • Paramount

    by Eloy on 11/9/22Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 2 out of 5

Horrible. Long waiting lines to get in. The staff was very disorganized. We arrived 6:45 pm and the venue kept selling tickets! Lila doesn’t even bother to wait 10 minutes to start performing. We got in at 7:20 pm!!! Many people kept getting in after 30 minutes! WTF! Totally annoying because they were interrupting your sights! The staff very mismanner demaning you to not record the show! Why? Lila is a great voice but her show is very, "basic". She don't even hire lights (the teather was dark) or dancers!

  • Wonderful experience!

    by r. a.Reyna on 5/5/22Rating: 4 out of 5

I really enjoyed Lila’s concert, her vocals are amazing, the extraordinary musicians complement her voice and the dancers complete the picture. The only thing I didn’t liked is how short the concert was. I feel that 2hrs. is the minimum we all expected. Thank you Lila you are one of my favorite singers. Viva Lila Downs!🙏🏼
