Les Misérables on Tour

Theater producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh created his — dare we say it? — revolutionary new production of Les Misérables to commemorate the 25th anniversary of composer Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyricist Alain Boublil's musical, a rousing sung-through story of the Paris underclass' failed 1832 rebellion. After being seen around the world, Mackintosh's brisk new version opened in 2019 in the lavishly refurbished Sondheim Theatre (formerly Queen's Theatre) in London, thereby extending Les Mis' record as the West End's longest-running musical.

Mackintosh notably replaced the original production's famous revolving stage with a stream of projections derived from original drawings by Victor Hugo, upon whose 1862 novel Les Misérables is based. The current production stars Jon Robyns as Valjean, the tortured petty criminal whose pursuit by the steely and serpentine Javert (Bradley Jaden) drives the show. As the tragic Fantine, Carrie Hope Fletcher sings the show-stopping ballad "I Dreamed a Dream," and Shan Ako plays the equally ill-fated Eponine, who delivers the heartbreaking "On My Own." Surging ensemble numbers have been leaving audiences tingling.

About Les Misérables

The idea for a musical based on Victor Hugo's novel came to Alain Boublil during a performance of Oliver!, another show famously set among the proletariat. The concept album he recorded with composer Schönberg led to its first French stage version in 1980. Cameron Mackintosh's first English-language production opened in London in 1985, and Les Mis migrated to Broadway two years later. It has since been seen by more than 120 million people in 52 countries and 22 languages.

Set in the gritty streets of Paris during an explosive period of French history, Les Misérables conveys the poverty, danger and degradation of lower-class existence through magnificent songs such as "I Dreamed a Dream," "Bring Him Home," "One Day More" and "Master of the House." And the new production, according to The Guardian's Miriam Gillinson, could not be more contemporary, arriving as it does "at a time when all of us — in our own way — are hoping for a brighter tomorrow."

the actors were first rate, singing talent was strong, generally. After seeing the original production, this one seemed less connected. Alot was lost by not feeling the true and disturbing interaction of the two leads. Nothing could be taken away from the music or the singers, it was truly moving, Again, only weakness was in the relational interaction as portrayed in this anniversary edition. preferred the original version. thank you

    Outstanding Production Value

by LillD on 4/26/11Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - Milwaukee

This play has so much to offer, but do not go expecting a lighthearted musical. The play's plot line is quite intense. In my opinion, the production values are second to none, and the acting is superb. The vocals are strong and beautiful. At our performance, however, I found the orchestra to occasionally overpower the vocals, which was disheartening since when it seemed to be balanced, I found the lyrics were exceptionally on point, and the balance with the orchestration produced an amazing, moving mix.

    Disappointed in Milwaukee

by JLE4me on 4/26/11Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - Milwaukee

This is my 5th time seeing Les Mis - it has been 10 years since I saw it last. I was VERY excited that it was returning to stage and drove out of state to see the new performance. We took our entire family because I loved this musical so much. I hate to be negative but this experience was extremely disappointing. This felt like an amateur performance - as though I were watching college students perform it. The stage was incredibly small and so the extras/townspeople were also few - which greatly took away from the powerful songs. I am usually in awe and overwhelmed at the power of the music and vocals. This experience was the opposite. CAST: Fantine was unbelievably bad. I am unsure of how she got cast. Javaert was ok but not at all what I was used to seeing. Jon Val Jean was good vocally but lacked good acting. He stood and sang his songs instead of acting while singing. Marius, Eponine and Cozet were by far the best in the cast and did very well. Ongirous (not sure how to spell his name) was SO disappointing. His voice should be booming throughout the theater making us all want to "join in the fight that will give them the right to be free", but their were times his voice didn't even carry over the orchestra. SO disappointing. CHANGES: As for the updates/changes to the new tour, it is true what all the other reviews say about the speeding up of the songs. My father who had never seen the show before was lost at times because you couldn't understand what they were saying. There were no pauses to take in the power of the scene - just rushing through. The lack of the rotating stage greatly took away from the powerfuly baricade scenes. They used to rotate the baricade and you would gasp at the scene of post battle. In this version, they paused for maybe a half a second after the fighting and quickly pushed right into the sewer scenes - so you didn't even have time to process the human cost of the baricade. The Javeart death scene change was terrible - by far the worst change. The addition of the sex scene in Master of the House was completely ridiculous. I could see it in Lovely Ladies - but this was just unnecessary and didn't even really fit. Gavroch's death and the cut of little people was also so unfortunate. All these cuts, changes and lack of pauses completely strip the musical of the dramatic power of the loss of the baricade battle. The positive part for me was we had really good seats. And Marius, Eponine and Cozet were very good. The Tenardias are always fun of course. If you have seen the earlier productions of Les Mis and fell in love with the breathtaking power of the music and the power of the baricade - don't see this touring company. Sell your tickets on ebay. Wait for it to return to the theater with a higher quality cast. You will walk away disappointed and feeling like you wasted a significant amount of money.

    les miserables

by c23el45ai67ne89 on 4/25/11Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - Milwaukee

Jean val jean was terrific. Cosette was too soft. At times, the orchestra drowned out the performers. It was also distracting to have the conductor on a monitor.

Les Miserables was impressive and moving.

by Anonymous on 4/25/11Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - Milwaukee

The show was very enjoyable. Only issue I had was at times it was difficult to hear some of the words from the actors because the music drowned them out. I was very impressed with the special effects and the ease of transition from set to set.

Never get tired of seeing Les Mis live

by LMBLS on 4/25/11Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - Milwaukee

This is my third time seeing Les Mis and while some of the leads were exceptionally good - best I have ever seen, some were just OK. I sort of missed the round set and I thought it could have been a little louder(but maybe that was due to my seats.) I just enjoy the music so much and admire the talent of the singers.

Les Miserables - still my favorite

by Anonymous on 4/24/11Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - Milwaukee

I have seen Les Miserables 3 times now and of all the shows I have seen it remains my favorite. This production with it's new scenery effects was amazing. However we were with a group of 6 and all of us were very disappointed with the sound system at the Marcus Center. I know the show very well so it was slightly less of a problem, however those of my group who had not seen the show before had alot of difficulty understanding the words. The vocal ability of all the cast members was superb, but the story line is equally important. It seemed to more of a problem when the singers were down stage near the edge of the orchestra pit - they were somewhat drowned out by the musicians. Have had that same problem with other productions in this house. Still remains my favorite.

    Les Miserables truly lives on!

by Rick1961 on 4/24/11Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - Milwaukee

This is the 25th year Anniversary for the legendary musical Les Miserables. The songs were as beautiful as ever. The cast was absolutely top-notch. The stage scenery was magnificent. Gone now is the former stage which on a revolving turn table now replaced by lavish settings and Victor Hugo inspired back drops. It was truly a most memorable night.

    LIfe-changing

by beenaroundtheblock on 4/24/11Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - Milwaukee

The performance was amazing...I had goosebumps most of the time. The set of the barricade was ingenious and thrilling...all the voices were wonderful! Can't believe I hadn't seen this earlier in my life...so many songs I already know by heart. Too bad about the Packer t-shirt at the end and the shameless pitch for donations. I wanted to remember the actors in character!!

    Disappointed

by TDStas on 4/24/11Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - Milwaukee

Worst production I have seen. My husband wanted to leave at intermission. Weak vocals, terrible lighting and sound. The performance felt very rushed, like they were trying to cut 15 minutes off the show. Maybe they needed to because at the end of the show, we had to listen to a PBS-like plea for donations. We were very disappointed because we really were looking forward to the show.

    Never a "miserable" show...

by Saranohriz on 4/23/11Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - Milwaukee

Although I didn't like some of the casting, the music of Les Miserables wins out every time. I love the score and the emotion it conveys. Le Miz is my favorite musical. The voices were great and the production tight. The surprise "superman" reveal of the Green Bay shirt by the actor portraying Javert was a wonderful theatre moment for me (and I am not even a Packers fan). Can't wait to see this again!
