About

LES CLAYPOOL IN CONCERT:

In 2012, Les Claypool, virtuoso bassist and frontman of legendary funk rock band Primus, unveiled a new acoustic project with guitarist Bryan Kehoe dubbed Duo De Twang. Exploring Americana and  roots rock, Duo De Twang stands in stark contrast to the sonic assault of Primus, favoring stripped down arrangements, minimal percussion, and an intimate live setup. Fans of humorous songwriting are in luck — Duo De Twang explore a brand of leftfield storytelling that will ring familiar to fans of Claypool's beloved work with Primus, including several reinterpretations of favorites like "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver" and "Jerry Was a Racecar Driver." In conjunction with the 2014 release of their debut album Four Foot Shack, Duo De Twang are hitting the road for their first tour, treating fans around the country to Calypool's signature twangy vocals and furious fingerpicking.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born and raised in California, Claypool took up the bass during childhood in order to set himself apart from the abundance of aspiring guitarists looking to be the next Eddie Van Halen. Mastering the art of slap bass in high school, he founded Primus in the mid '80s, giving the bass a prominent position in the band's unique sound. With their eccentric appearance and often bizarre lyrics, Primus was an idiosyncratic presence on the charts in the '90s, an odd bedfellow to the more straight-ahead alternative rock bands of the decade.  From heading Lollapalooza in 1993 to penning the South Park theme song in 1997, Primus made the art of letting your freak flag fly fashionable — a legacy Claypool clearly intends to build on with Duo De Twang.

    The artists were phenomenal.

by Mike on 6/16/23Township Auditorium - Columbia

The only reason I didn't give a 5 star has more to do with the venue as opposed to the performance. The concert was memorable in its' innovation, skill and execution and the light show was top notch. Seating at the arena was tight and the experience fouled by two very intoxicated people directly behind us. Love, love, love Les Claypool.

    Absolutely amazing

    by E. M. on 6/14/23Township Auditorium - Columbia

If you like the material it was an amazing show. The band was incredible and animals blew my mind! Very true to the source material and the closest to an actual floyd concert you will find. And les plays his own stuff too!

Love this venue and the bands both tore it up!

by Lorie on 6/14/23Township Auditorium - Columbia

Love the drink prices being a bit more normal than most places these days. The sound & views on this venue are awesome. However, one big downfall is that there isn’t a smoking patio. Because of this, people are smoking inside the venue. For me, it’s REALLY tough. I just quit smoking & the smell makes me sick. Please add smokers patios or security needs to watch people smoking better. It’s unfortunate because that smoke can also ruin the venue. Hate that guests are able to do that in there & not feel bad about it. Other than that, I still love Township & will be back for more shows. Just really wish there wasn’t cigarette smoke inside.

    Legendary Show

by Don on 6/14/23Township Auditorium - Columbia

Adrian Belew never disappoints live. Harrison is ageless and the backup band Cool Cool Cool was perfect. Les Claypool and his band rocked their cover of Animals.

    BEST CONCERT EVER

by Shea on 6/14/23Township Auditorium - Columbia

It was simply amazing! Animals is my favorite album hands down and has been for 25 years. Aside from that, Les Claypool, Sean Lennon, Mike Dillon and the remaining members were so in sync throughout the performance and the songs in their catalog were performed with stellar musicianship and unequivocal passion. Also, the talking heads members, Jerry Harrison and Adrian Belew, opened up with “Psycho Killer” and “Crosseyed and Painless“ off the rip was incredible! The rest of their set was simply amazing. Three days after and I’m still on cloud 9 that I got to witness that masterpiece. Our first child had only been home for 2 days and my wife still let me go because she knew how much I was looking forward to it. She is a bonified saint for letting me go and not holding it against me. I will truly treasure the experience as it was easily one of the top 10 concerts of my lifetime and maybe even top 5.

    Amazing show

by Zach on 6/13/23Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts (fka Duke Energy) - Raleigh

This was like seeing three concerts all at once: Talking Heads, Les Claypool, and Pink Floyd, and they absolutely nailed it on all three counts. The musicianship was amazing on all fronts.

Sad to say, had to leave

by Rob Ried on 6/12/23Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts (fka Duke Energy) - Raleigh

First things first. I am NOT a fan of Ticketmaster and Live Nation. NO amount of corporate verbiage (sewage) will convince me that the "service" charges for their concerts are justified. And when these are thrown at you after having to enter all your payment information...??!! As for Les Claypool & Co's performance, I can't speak as a fan, so those who are, should discount this immediately. I'd heard a studio recording of Claypool and Lennon, which caught my ear and I liked several of the tracks. Other than that, I didn't know their stuff. I'm also not familiar with Pink Floyd's "Animals," which I'm told they were playing. Maybe if I was, it could have helped. Somewhat. But, to my ears, even with earplugs, the music was overamplified, the mix was muddy, and, for me -- again, someone not familiar with the music -- it was pure tedium. I left about 1/2 way through the performance and situated myself outside the auditorium in a comfortable lounge chair, waiting to reconnect with 2 friends who were still inside. One of those two also walked out, just a bit later. I was at the concert really to see the opening group -- Adrian Belew/Jerry Harrison -- whose performance I would give a full 5 stars without hesitation. I am a fan both of Belew in his various associations, Harrison via Talking Heads, and of "Remain In Light. The energy on stage, the balance of repertoire, the leads, the rhythms, the blends, and the crispness and clarity of the band's sound, effective at levels that did not require earplugs, the sum total of all that was very impressive. I said to my neighbors sitting near me that Belew/Harrison was going to be a tough act to follow. And then hearing what actually followed convinced me.

Not a place for live music

by CONCERTFAN on 6/10/23Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts (fka Duke Energy) - Raleigh

We’ve been here for a stage show and it was tight seating. This was our first time for a live music show and it will be my last. No room for dancing at all. No swaying or anything, just too full. Once people started leaving, it was better but we paid $500 to be able to tap our foot for all but 45 minutes of the show.

    Good show

by NeverseenLesorPrimus on 6/10/23Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts (fka Duke Energy) - Raleigh

Good show. Surprised so many left after the Animals performance. Venue needs to allow sealed water bottles or reusable containers. I went to this show on a budget, with a sealed water bottle and was forced to toss it and charge a bottle of water. It’s a basic human need, hydration. Sad they have to nickel and dime you, or should I say five and ten dollar you to stay alive.

    Primus is for special peeps

    by K. B. on 2/1/23

Look, Primus is not for everyone. I’ve been going to their concerts scone 1991. I LOVE THEM. If you’re going to complain about sound, make sure you talk to the sound engineer/s. Don’t one star Primus.

    Thumbs down on the venue

by JMD on 5/3/22Orpheum Theater - New Orleans

Went to Les Claypool at the Orpheum with my son. DESPITE the statements on the website, that the menu was "smoke-free" many people including several people seated in the row in front of us, were smoking. I was forced to leave because the smoke had set off a migraine and nausea. When I mentioned why I was leaving, folks at the venue showed no surprise. DO NOT BOTHER attending the Orpheum if you have any sensitivity to smoking or vaping.

    One long mindtrip

by Romper on 5/2/22Orpheum Theater - New Orleans

The musicians in this group truly know how to jam. The sax, Keyboards, Guitars, vocals all blend together with the lighting to transform your mind and energy. You can't help but to move and smile. Might of been better in the Balcony seats as it's a long show for anyone that is in an altered state.

    Sound Check Fail!!!

by Chill WIll on 5/1/22Orpheum Theater - New Orleans

I have seen Les many times in different settings. I don't know exactly what was wrong with Les's sound but it was bad. I was front row, and the bass sounded muffled. There was this load bass overtone that raddled my ears. His Mic sound was muffle sounding too. It was like his audio was not coming out of the house speakers. IDK, but I could not enjoy the show. There was few other in the front crowd with the same complaint. I could here the percussion perfect, just not Les. Much love for Les, but they need to express better quality control over house sound equipment I guess.

    One giant jam

by Wolfman on 5/1/22Orpheum Theater - New Orleans

Exactly what you would expect from Les Claypool doing his take on jazz. Mind bending! Lots of bass and drums and some far out grooves. Stanton Moore is solid and Mike Dillon brings the perfect amount of percussion. Sax player fills in for just about everything else and he’s a lot of fun!

    Poor sound

by Toaster on 5/1/22Orpheum Theater - New Orleans

Not claypools fault but the audio mix was terrible and couldn't hear his playing at all. The show was essentially a garage a trois show for what the audience could make it.
