great show and next to Leon a great band with outstanding musicians. Too bad there was no time for me after the show to personally hand over a 39 yr old picture of Leon Russell. I shot, developed and printed this picture myself in October 1970 and I wanted to hand over the original version. However, I didn't spoil my evening. I fully enjoyed the concert.

    A stroll down memory lane

by BMWAssist on 10/22/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

Danny Nova was a fine opener, joined by a youngster. Leon performed a fine full set, enjoying the evening as much as the audience, and closd with "Great balls of fire" and "Roll over Beethoven." Everybody left satisified.

    What's with the sound???

by pock on 8/29/09Rex Theatre - Pittsburgh

Great to see Leon but the sound was so bad, that it took about a minute into each song to even hear what song it was. His band was great!

    Leon Russel@ the Rex

    by grash73 on 8/29/09Rex Theatre - Pittsburgh

Leon was still the pro that he was 30 some years ago when I saw him at the civic arena. though when he came on with a cane I knew he wasn't going to stand on a grand piano and play guitar. He did rock though. I really like the fact that he didn't have to do the fake encore. Ticketmaster and the Rex had to make as much money as he did , between the service charge and the number of drinks they have to sell before they let the headliner play. Us old rockers don't like waiting a 1/2 hour out side and an hour and a half inside .

by putvalgal on 7/29/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

Rocking blues band. Even though Leon is getting old, he and his band rocked the house. Exceptional good time, good food and service. All in all, a great night for under $100. I had fun!!!

    Leon is old

by Leonfan on 7/28/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

Leon is showing his age; can still rock for a 67 year old, but his range is very limited now. He didn't play some of his best stuff. His band talented, but not as tight as it could have been and overpowered his voice and keyboards.

    Leon was Masterful!

by JudiVNYC on 7/28/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

I have loved Leon Russell for at least 30 years. His unique style of playing and singing has warmed my heart and kept me rocking. He never fails to make me smile. This show was intimate, driving and electric. Although it was apparent he left a lot of the heavy rocking to the younger band members, his hand was always on the helm. What a talent! He talked to us as well as played, and although he's getting older, he's still got a dynamic performance style that shouldn't be missed.

The Old Man Can Still Rock!

by messyheadblues on 7/28/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

Leon Russell has been doing this for over 50 years, since he first left Oklahoma and went to Los Angeles to become one of the most important session musicians and producers of the 60's. Any doubt about the state of his abilities and stage presence are dispelled with the first notes of his howling voice and pounding piano. While the old man is not as spry as he used to be, and may not get carried into the transports he did during his decades-long inebriation, he still possesses one of hte most distinct and powerful voices in rhythm and blues music. His sets are a mix of old rock and roll and blues covers, as well as his own classic compositions like "A Song For You," "Delta Lady," and "Stranger in a Strange Land." Adding to his sound is a world-class band, most of whom have been with Leon for one or more decades. Perhaps the highlight of this band is the young Alabaman, Chris Simmons, whose soulful singing, Gram Parsons appearance, and mastery of the guitar, both in its rock and slide modes, suggests a bright musical future. This was the third appearance by Leon Russell in NYC this year, and we will be lucky to have more next year.

    Leon was Fabulous

by Angelsinmay on 7/28/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

This must be the 3rd or 4th time that I have had the pleasure of seeing Leon over the course of 37 years and each event is more memorable than the last. The man is so smooth and just rocks my world everytime I see him perform. My only qualm regarding the performance, I think the voice level could have been raised a tad more or the instruments lowered a bit. That is just my prefrence - usually for any R&R show. Maybe thats just age getting the better of me....

    Leon Russell was o.k.

by jackjo on 7/18/09Magic Bag - Ferndale

I hadn't listened to the newer recordings of Leon Russell-my favorites are the 70's. Didn't care for the rockabilly sound of the new. His guartatist was excellent, and for the price I was happy to finally get to attend one of Leon Russells' concerts. Would have liked it more if the music was split 50/50 new vs. old.

    Leon was Frickin Electrifying

by OldDeadeye on 7/14/09Aladdin Theater - Portland

My first time at the Aladdin and was impressed with this venue. Personnel were friendly and helpful. Accoustics were excellent and it is a perfect hall for intimate gigs. Did I mention that LEON RUSSELL STILL ROCKS!!!!!?

    Leon at last!

by Anfran on 7/14/09Harrah's VooDoo Lounge - Maryland Heights

It was my first time to see Leon Russell - & with the exception of the band not doing "Tightrope", it was a wonderful concert. I was a bit surprised by the crowd though - after he performed his first song, I stood to cheer & clap - but noticed I didn't have much, if any, company doing so. What's up with that? His voice is still so strong - it was a privilege to see him!

    Leon is about the music!

by Moonlightning on 7/14/09Harrah's VooDoo Lounge - Maryland Heights

Leon hit the stage a rocking "Jumping Jack Flash" in the intimate Voodoo Lounge was kinda like having the "Stones" Live in your Living room, but with the vocals only Leon can do! Great musicians all brought their uniqueness to the evening. Leon sang as well as ever. I don't think that he talked to the audience once. The man is about the music only! My only disapointment was the cut time up tempo "Stanger in a Strange Land" one of my all time favorite songs was done too fast to enjoy it. It left me feeling Leon was tired of playing it and wanted to make it through it as fast as possible. All in all the concert absolutely rocked!

    Sound quality awful

by Cambot on 7/14/09Aladdin Theater - Portland

The best place to hear Leon Russell and his band play was in the staircase leading up to the balcony and in the ladies room. It was only there that I could understand the lyrics. Otherwise, the sound was garbled and tinny. The Aladdin is known for sound quality problems, though we've been to wonderful concerts there without that being a problem. It seems the louder the band wants to play, the worse the sound quality. We've seen Oregon, Joe Ely, John MacLoughlin and others that were a delight. The opening act was a funny, musically talented guy. He sounded just fine. We also felt Mr. Russell and Co. didn't represent the best part of his work in what they played. Leon Russell may be tired of playing his own works, but we hope he can come back and do a more personal, less montage style concert. Had he just come out with a couple of other musicians and played from the heart, it would have been a great show.

    Awesome as usual

by razeldazel on 7/14/09Harrah's VooDoo Lounge - Maryland Heights

As usual Leon sparkled!! I'll go see him every time I get a chance!! His new bass player is so cute and fun and his (other) keyboard player is great also. You MUST SEE Leon the next time you have the opportunity. I'm a Leon Lifer for sure.
