LCD SOUNDSYSTEM IN CONCERT:

Back in the early '00s fans fell hard and fast for the funky electronica and rebellious rock and roll spirit LCD Soundsystem brought to their superb albums and killer live shows. The fun ended in 2011 when the band hung up their guitars and unplugged their drum machines, but not all was lost—legendary frontman James Murphy announced a reunion in 2015, and fans can't wait for LCD to blast some seriously funky stuff when they return to the stage. With headlining sets at several world-class festivals slated for 2016, the band has fans chomping at the bit to dance the night away to favorites like “Losing My Edge”, “Daft Punk Is Playing at My House”, and “North American Scum”. LCD Soundsystem is sure to deliver the party-worthy passion that ticket buyers love to feel on the dance floor, and fans can't wait for their epic comeback party.

BACKFROUND SNAPSHOT:

James Murphy bounced around the NYC music scene for more than a decade before gaining traction with the DJ project Death from Above, which saw him spinning everything from Daft Punk to Can. After seeing a younger DJ aping his unique mixes, he was inspired to write the snarky, humorous “Losing My Edge” in 2002 and LCD Soundsystem was born. He continued to cut successful singles and assembled a group of musicians to recreate his songs in a live setting, a move that thrilling both indie rockers and underground dance fans. Murphy's underground fame soon gave way to crossover success—the band's 2005 self-titled debut and 2007 album Sound of Silver both received Grammy nominations for Best Electronica/Dance Album. After the release of their 2010 album This Is Happening, Murphy decided to step out of the limelight and announced the group’s final show the following year. The hiatus only lasted four years, as the songwriter posted a heartfelt letter to his fans in 2015 telling them he had come up with a wealth of new material and decided that his former band would be the best outlet for it. With LCD Soundsystem headlining major festivals like Coachella in 2016, fans can’t wait to pick up where this dance party left off.

    Way too quiet

by Smeee on 5/11/18Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I know we got tickets really far away from the stage but I was so disappointed in the sound. It was really hard to hear the concert. Felt like I wasn't even there.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs vs. LCD Soundsystem

by ZeroZeroOne on 5/10/18Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The show I attended was alright. The Hollywood Bowl is a nice outdoor music venue and it was my first time ever going, but it's not great to see live rock shows. They do rent out seat cushions for a dollar if you have a sensitive butt. The large crowds meant long lines for at the entrance and security checkpoint and at concessions. The YeahYeahYeahs performance was amazing, KarenO was lively and energetic on stage. The lighting was great and the video screens helped to make the performance great. The sound quality for the rock band just wasn't great though. Maybe it was because I was towards the middle back, but the sound wasn't great. Speakers should be set up higher into the audience area so I can FEEL the music. This is the reason I go to live concerts. LCD SS was just ok. They tend to play long drawn out music that takes forever to get to the point. Their sound is not bad if you just want something to mellow out to and have as background noise. The openers, Young Fathers, was a great band. I wasn't super impressed with their sound, but I'd see them again. Overall the show was great, especially the YYYs. It's not a bad place to see bands if you live in the area, but if you traveled from out of state, like I did, it may be worthwhile to just see them in a smaller venue.

    Floor Seats at the Bowl!

    by ninja77 on 5/9/18Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

First time I was lucky enough to be on the floor at this venue. Such a great view! The Yeah Yeah Yeahs were amazing and Karen Oh's energy level is and was off the charts. LCD Soundsystem was great too, but I definitely enjoyed the Yeah Yeah Yeahs more. I just wish people understand the importance of concert etiquette.

Yeah yeah yeah I liked it!

by WeirdAlhambra on 5/8/18Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

We went just for the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, whom we have wanted to see for the longest time but have never had the chance. They were exceptional. Karen O has an amazing and melodious voice and can hit both the high notes and the screams. The set list was perfect and included all of my favorites. I also liked how they had the confetti and did more with the video than just show a live shot. I don’t like that they were double billed with LCD Soundsystem because that made the concert too short (1-1/2 hours). I had never heard any LCD Soundsystem songs, so I checked them out on YouTube, but thought they were monotonous. I missed most of the opening act because I was waiting in line for drinks, but didn’t like them either. We usually park at the zoo for Bowl concerts, but tried Hollywood and Highland so we could leave after the YYY’s. We had to walk all over to find the orange court where the bus was parked, so we didn’t have enough time to buy refreshments ahead of time. The walk back was pretty easy, even for my pregnant wife. Security was pretty good before the sun set, they were giving out tickets to everyone blowing smoke, but then they disappeared once the show started. I would highly recommend the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

I didn't know any of the bands

by Sensitivehearing on 5/8/18Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The bands were great. I'm glad the bands didn't allow the back speakers to be turned on because that would have been painful for me. I didn't know the bands but they were pretty amazing . I wished they showed the young fathers on the screen like they did with the other bands. My friend was mesmerized the entire time.

    Sound issues?

by JenHelene on 5/8/18Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

So Yeah Yeah Yeahs are amazing, as always, but from our seats(very far away fyi, in section S) the sound was awful! I'm not sure if that is typical or not, but the sound kept going in and out. Yet, for LCD Soundsystem this this wasn't an issue at all. Their set sounded awesome. Sound aside, both bands were great

LCD & YEAH YEAH YEAHS FUN SHOW

    by Blo1124 on 5/8/18Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The Bowl is always a super place to see a band - and the pure electronic sounds of LCD and the rockin' performance of YYY's was a great audio experience. I was dead center about half way up and the musical sound was amazing. Loved the YYY's coffetti shoots and the cool lighting of LCD as an added touch.

    Danced the night away!

by Sweetnhazy on 5/8/18Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Great show. I just felt that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were rushed and could have sand more songs. I want to see them again. LCD Sound System was great. I only knew three of their songs though. My husband loved them.

    Very Competent Musicians

by SGrey on 5/8/18Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Technically, I went to see the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and they were phenomenal, every screech, howl, yelp, and lyric was delivered masterfully by Karen O. FABOLOUS. The band always transitioning from the end of the song to another without stopping just continuous jamming. ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL. LCD Soundsystem played their 6 minute long songs very well.

The sound was terrible during the whole show. It sounded muffled and faded in and out. Very disappointing. Had to move down and stand to hear it a little bit better.

Good sound, terrible views and screens

by hampsterdam on 5/8/18Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Both LCD Soundsystem and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were outstanding live, in terms of sound and stage presence. The problem was the venue: Unless you get really good seats, Hollywood Bowl is just too big for bands like this, where the energy is critical. We were in the upper section and the bands were just tiny specks. Compounding the matter, both bands had tons of lights flashing behind them that made it even harder to make out the actual performers. Normally, having screens would help people further away. But at this show the filming was from awkward angles (lead singers were probably visible, from the front, for about 2% of each show) and with frequent, jarring cuts. The screens actually distracted from what little of the show you could possible see. I'd recommend both bands for anyone who can see them in a smaller venue or who gets good seats. Otherwise, just listen to the albums and save your money.

    Tone Deaf

by AllHighsandLows on 5/8/18Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The sound quality was atrocious, granted I have had the pleasure of attending the bowl multiple times and have had decent sound experiences before. With respect to quality, the bowl is certainly not an acoustic marvel, but the production of this show was not up to par with other experiences I had. For the first few songs of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs sound was in mono and most of the show the mids we're blown out, lows and highs were all over the place coming in and out throughout the concert. The monitors in the rear of the theater were not producing any sound. The sound issues seemed to be resolved the last few songs of LCD Sound Systems set. I'm not a sound engineer by any means, but I have seen The Yeah Yeah Yeahs perform before and know that what was produced is nothing near what they normally produce. Going forward I would be hesitant to attend another concert here

    The House Rocked

by RockingRon on 5/8/18Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I've been to many concerts in my lifetime. If this concert was not the best, it definitely tied with the top concert I've been to! I watched Young Fathers on Youtube the week before (by opening another browser to setlist.fm to see what set they played at recent gigs)and was ready to enjoy what I would call, their alternative style of rap. I watched them from my seat in the 2nd to the last row of the bleachers dreaming of "If I was only in the pit right now!" I want to see them again for an hour set and just not 30 minutes. I also watched the Yeah Yeah Yeahs on Youtube the week before(by opening another browser to setlist.fm to check out their sets from recent gigs). What a show...60 minutes of alternative rock! I watched them from the walkway on the 3rd level, just outside the elevator with a nice pair of binoculars. Great performance which took me down memory lane. And I watched LCDSS from the same spot. They played 140 minute straight w/o an encore! I remember every minute of every song, as I was stone cold sober buzzing on coffee and germanium! Unbelievable performance by James Murphy and his crew! Do not miss LCDSS if you love their music. BTW, if you go to setlist.fm, you can view the set they did on Cinco De Mayo, and open another browser on youtube and watch live versions of those particular songs performed by LCDSS, The Gods of EDM! James Murphy: I sent you 5 letters! I hope to meet you someday!

    Terrible sound

by Ashleyhartz on 5/8/18Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I spent $50 on a ticket for a show I was extremely excited about. Seems like the venue forgot to turn on the speakers in the back. Terrible experience of not being able to hear anything. I’d like a refund.

by JCroyance on 5/7/18Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs put on a phenomenal show! The sound had issues in the beginning of their set and during Young Fathers (who were also incredible), but overall it was a great show!

LCD's First night at the Hollywood Bowl

by MARIOFAMOSO on 5/7/18Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Amazing...you cold tell that they were really jazzed to be there and to play with the YYY's for the first time. It was probably one of the best concerts I have been to. Was really looking forward to seeing them the next night...after the warm up on the first night.

Bad sound and a flipped lineup made this show meh

by Melia on 5/7/18Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I’ve heard nothing but good things about the Hollywood Bowl. This venue is beautiful. I was so excited to see Yeah Yeah Yeahs and LCD Soundsystem in a paramount performance. I was left feeling a little disappointed. Opening band had sound on to the max, I could barely hear conversation over the blasting noise of Young Fathers. At least that meant the rest of the show would rock, right? Wrong. Yeah Yeah Yeahs had a great setlist, hit after hit... if you could hear them. Sound waved back and forth across sides, and sometimes muffled entirely. If I wanted to hear these songs as if an auxiliary cord wasn’t quite plugged into the speaker, I could have stayed home. The opening band’s sound was perfect if not a little much... did they blast something out? LCD Soundsystem was good, but I didn’t feel like their set merited the closing spot. Plus, YYY have been around longer and had yet to play the Bowl. I’m questioning the booking decisions here. Would this keep me from visiting the Bowl again? No, but I’m bummed that this show missed a lot of marks for me throughout.
