About

Meaning "red-haired one" in French, La Roux is the synth pop project of flame-haired singer/songwriter Elly Jackson and keyboardist/producer Ben Langmaid. Before they collaborated, Jackson, the daughter of actress Trudie Goodwin, grew up listening to folk artists and singer/songwriters like Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell, and drew inspiration from their sounds for her early music. However, Jackson's style changed as she got into the rave scene, taking her music in a more electronic direction. Meanwhile, Langmaid had gone to school with Rollo from Faithless, and the two recorded as house duo Huff & Puff in the mid-'90s; Langmaid also recorded as Atomic and as one half of Huff & Herb for Rollo's label, and was a songwriter for the group Kubb. Jackson and Langmaid began working together in 2006, when they were introduced by a mutual acquaintance. Initially, they called their project Automan and wrote largely acoustic music before scrapping that name and sound for the sleek Prince, David Bowie, and the Knife-inspired style they pursued as La Roux, a moniker Jackson found in a book of baby names. Their debut single, "Quicksand," was released by Kitsune in fall 2008, and earned the band acclaim from the BBC and the Guardian. La Roux supported Lily Allen on her 2009 U.K. tour around the time their second single, "In for the Kill," was released that spring and debuted at 11 on the U.K. charts, reaching a peak position of two; that summer, the single "Bulletproof" debuted at number one a week before La Roux's self-titled album was released. La Roux arrived in the States that fall. Late that year, the duo began working on new material that steered away from the heavy '80s influence of its debut. In early 2010, Skream's remix of "In for the Kill" won Best Dancefloor Filler at the NME Shockwave Awards. That summer, "Bulletproof" entered the Top Ten of Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart, and La Roux released the mix album Sidetracked. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

  • Brilliant!

by FattyMcBoom on 6/4/10House of Blues Dallas - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

This show was so amazing. Great performance, great crowd, great experience. They covered "Under My Thumb" - totally unexpected but a joyful surprise because it is my favorite Rolling Stones song. After the show, I got William, Mickey, and Elly's autographs and a pic with Elly, herself, (THANKS JESS!). They were all REALLY nice and chatted with everyone for a few minutes. The concert just happened to be on my birthday eve, so it led in my best birthday ever. Thank you, La Roux!

  • Great live performance!

While only having one album out, la roux managed to play through most of their stuff making it a very memorable live performance.

  • Amazing Show!

I brought my 2 daughters (10 & 13) and their 2 best friends (11 &13) to the show. This was their first concert ever! We were almost next to the stage and saw everything so up close! The girls had a blast! La Roux sounds like perfection in person, just as good - if not better - than on the cd. I am so glad this was their first concert. La Roux makes great music that is pure and kid-friendly. I love how Elly doesn't have to take her clothes off to sell music. She is who she is! I absolutely love that! My daughters and their friends will never forget it!

  • La Roux Was Awesome Live!

by ReadyforSummer on 6/3/10House of Blues Dallas - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Obviously La Roux as a band has incredible talents. They showed that live in concert. Elly Jackson's vocals were just as good live if not better than on radio, videos, or cd. There was one opening band called Binary Sunrise, who were interesting to watch. They had a lot of fun with their music. La Roux of course was amazing. I would go again in a heartbeat.

  • La Roux Rocked the House

by Shelar on 6/3/10House of Blues Dallas - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

What can I say? La Roux has attitude and a massive set of pipes! She really worked the stage and the crowd. She didn't disappoint!

La Roux is very good live! Seen her twice now, hasn't disappointed. House of Blues Dallas venue wasn't the greatest- drinks overpriced.

  • I enjoyed House of blues

by Anonymous on 6/3/10House of Blues Dallas - DallasRating: 1 out of 5

But not La Roux. I thought it was a weak show. They waited to do Bulletproof until the end and now I know why...because if they did it at the beginning or middle, people would have walked out of the rest of the show. The opening band was awful and most likely the worst band I have ever seen play in my entire life. I thought it was a joke at first but then they played for like a full hour. It was horrible. House of Blues Dallas rocks though! Great bars!

  • Excellent performance!

by sunchick on 6/3/10House of Blues Dallas - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

La Roux truly wowed in Dallas. Elly Jackson, front woman, truly exceeded expectations. She's VERY new to performing in the US and has only been performing in the UK for about a year, maybe 18 months. But you would never guess she was that "green". Elly dances adorably, sings beautifully and is so endearing. Girls wanted to be her and guys wanted to get with her. She's fun and energetic, appreciative that the crowd was excited (love her adorable accent), and professional. The setlist was short - but she only has one album!! Not much material to work with, but she also threw in a great Rolling Stones cover. Overall, a great show, in an ideal venue for her first Dallas performance. I even got to meet her and the band after and they were all tired (understandably) but still grateful of their fans.

  • La Roux is incredible!

Everything was impressive. Her voice, the sound and the staging. It almost felt like a dream.

  • Woohoo!

by ChongoJenn on 6/3/10House of Blues Dallas - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

The crowd wasn't as dancey as my friends and I would have liked, but we didn't let that affect us! We danced the night away anyway! La Roux has a great voice and she had a great show! I'd see her again!

  • La Roux: Extraordinarily Talented and Stunning

by JakeForFemaleVocalists on 6/3/10House of Blues Dallas - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

I actually bought these tickets a month before they came out but ended up winning two of them + a meet-and-greet on Tuesday (and the concert was Wednesday) through a radio station. Let me say that she is a.) much more beautiful than her videos and pictures make her seem, b.) just as talented, if not more talented, than her records give credit for, and c.) extremely personable. She is very gracious, humble, and at ease. I love her bravery in coming to the United States when only one single (as of now) has been released here... And there was STILL a full house. I'm glad I wore earplugs, though. I recommend that you do the same. (For those of you wondering how many people are going to be there, Elly [the lead singer] and Ben [the synthesizer] are there, including two people on what seem to be using some sort of high-tech keyboards.)

  • La Roux was ehhhh

by Mollyf6686 on 6/3/10House of Blues Dallas - DallasRating: 3 out of 5

The opener was probally one of the worse bands ive ever seen, i think there name was Binary Sunrise? i dont know nor do i care. La Roux was okay, Ellys voice was pretty close to the studio sound. I thought her band was better than she was. Overall i give it 3 stars.

  • Beautiful performer, beautiful performance.

by chinen on 6/3/10House of Blues Dallas - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

I really really enjoyed La Roux's recent performance at the House of Blues. She had so much energy and such an awesome stage presence. I didn't much care for her opening act, but it did build quite the anticipation for her to take stage. The tickets were only 19.50. For future performances, I would definitely pay that again. It was worth double what was paid. <3 La Roux

  • La Roux was amazing

by Anonymous on 6/3/10House of Blues Dallas - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Waited about an hour for La Roux to play after an opening band. It was worth the standing and waiting. La Roux's entrance was amazing, everybody was anticipating Elly and the band to show up. Amazing energy from the crowd and Elly. Great concert!

  • by Shichiro on 6/3/10House of Blues Dallas - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

La Roux is an absolutely amazing band! the combination of great lights and a really neat animation in the background gave the show just a little bit extra. the retro 80s styling of the band plays really well with the electropop sound. Elly Jackson is an amazingly energetic lead! i can't wait until their new album hits stores!

  • Short but sweet

by csanborn on 6/3/10House of Blues Dallas - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

La Roux is much better in concert than on CD. Super fun and energetic! The concert started really early and ended early. Not used to headliners starting at 9 and ending at 10:30! But it was really lovely!

  • KILLED IT

by pauseBASSHEAD on 6/3/10House of Blues Dallas - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

It was awesome! PACKED. There was a rude fat lady in front of me but other than that it was great! She killed it. LOVE H.O.B. sound quality- loud and clear. Girl, bye.
