About

Meaning "red-haired one" in French, La Roux is the synth pop project of flame-haired singer/songwriter Elly Jackson and keyboardist/producer Ben Langmaid. Before they collaborated, Jackson, the daughter of actress Trudie Goodwin, grew up listening to folk artists and singer/songwriters like Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell, and drew inspiration from their sounds for her early music. However, Jackson's style changed as she got into the rave scene, taking her music in a more electronic direction. Meanwhile, Langmaid had gone to school with Rollo from Faithless, and the two recorded as house duo Huff & Puff in the mid-'90s; Langmaid also recorded as Atomic and as one half of Huff & Herb for Rollo's label, and was a songwriter for the group Kubb. Jackson and Langmaid began working together in 2006, when they were introduced by a mutual acquaintance. Initially, they called their project Automan and wrote largely acoustic music before scrapping that name and sound for the sleek Prince, David Bowie, and the Knife-inspired style they pursued as La Roux, a moniker Jackson found in a book of baby names. Their debut single, "Quicksand," was released by Kitsune in fall 2008, and earned the band acclaim from the BBC and the Guardian. La Roux supported Lily Allen on her 2009 U.K. tour around the time their second single, "In for the Kill," was released that spring and debuted at 11 on the U.K. charts, reaching a peak position of two; that summer, the single "Bulletproof" debuted at number one a week before La Roux's self-titled album was released. La Roux arrived in the States that fall. Late that year, the duo began working on new material that steered away from the heavy '80s influence of its debut. In early 2010, Skream's remix of "In for the Kill" won Best Dancefloor Filler at the NME Shockwave Awards. That summer, "Bulletproof" entered the Top Ten of Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart, and La Roux released the mix album Sidetracked. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

La Roux on a small stage like HOB is awesome. They are a great high energy Synth pop group that took me back to my teenage years in the 80's. I would highly recommend anyone to see there performance.

I was very impressed with La Roux. The vocals were impressive. Sound quality was adequate. Hope they tour America again in the future.

La Roux was AWESOME! I will go see this group the next time they are within 2 hours of me! Elly was everything I wanted her to be and more... I'm obsessed!

  • Freakin Awesome!!!

La Roux was amazing!! I was so worried that she wouldn't sound the same in concert as she does on the radio or TV since her voice is so unique. She sounded even better in person!!! I loved it!!

  • Emmy rocked it!!!

Despite the fact that we had to wait for two hours before she came on stage, she blew me away. I loved the mix up of her music. She sounded just as good as her CD if not better.

The show it self was awesome but the long wait before the show was what really sucked....

  • La Roux was beyond words amazing

There were minor technical difficulties but La Roux's amazingness made up for it!

  • La Roux La Rocked

by aTizz on 6/1/10House of Blues Houston - HoustonRating: 4 out of 5

The show started super late due to technical difficulties, but that was fine with me - I was delayed by travel and wouldn't have made the show otherwise. Ellie was engaging and her voice sounded amazing. Other than one cover of The Rolling Stones, they only had the 12 songs on the cd to work with. Will definitely check them out again when they have more songs to offer.

  • Fun Concert.

by Javari on 6/1/10House of Blues Houston - HoustonRating: 4 out of 5

La Roux started a bit late but made a clean and tactful apology for their technical difficulties. Her performance was great but only gave 4 stars since the sound quality was a bit off and she only sang a few songs (1 hr tops).

  • La Roux rocked The House of Blues!!

The show was amazing! La Roux is awesome!! The House of Blues was great also!

  • Lively and Fun!

by Leeann1 on 5/31/10House of Blues Houston - HoustonRating: 4 out of 5

Although they were very late coming on stage due to technical difficulties, and their set was short (only have one album so far) the show was still really fun, lively and thoroughly enjoyable. We took two other couples with us who didn't really know La Roux before and they're both off to buy their album now. The audience were predominantly in their teens and 20s (unlike us!) and clearly loved every minute of it.

HANDS DOWN, THIS WAS THE BEST CONCERT I'VE EVER GONE TO...BY FARRR! It was so amazing the only complaint I have is that it didn't last long enough!! It was definitely worth the wait!!!

  • La Roux was Rouxmarkable!

by hugapug on 5/31/10House of Blues Houston - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

The night started off badly with an hour and a half late start due to technical difficulties, but she redeemed herself with her 80's inspired fashion, great dancing and amazing music! It was a great show and well worth the wait!

I live in the houston area, but i never really go downtown to any events. I really enjoyed going to the House of Blues where there was easy parking and very easy to find. I loved La Roux! She was soo amazing! It took a long time to get in the doors because of a long line but it was definitely worth it! I definitely recommend anybody to go see her in concert! she really got the crowd pumped up too! The only difficulty was the waiting in line part...which was not so fun. But like i said it was overall fun!

A good time for all, La roux was electric onstage. Everyone was dancing. The only complaint was that there was no merch, i was hoping to buy a vinyl copy of the album. But thats not really a complaint. I went there for La roux and she delivered.

  • la roux was awesome!

the only reason i didn't give this five stars was because there were technical issues, so the concert didn't get started until 9:30 (instead of 8). but they stayed late (until 10:45ish) to finish the set. she was incredible!

Show was great she danced and danced it was amazing. Bad thing that the sound system was horrible and really made her not sound like herself. It was a little short I thought she couldve sang more but what she did sing was GREAT!!!!!!!!! I guess time goes fast when youre having fun!!! Also that birthday DJ girl needed to get off the stage!!!

  • TOO SHORT!

She started late and ended early. A one beer show!!!

  • La Roux was so precious!

by electroplid on 5/31/10House of Blues Houston - HoustonRating: 4 out of 5

I was surprised at the turnout, I'd only first heard her last April in Chicago. I had no idea she had such a good following! Yay for the resurgence of synth-pop! La Roux has an engaging quality that is quite ineffable and that is a rarity these days. She was fun to watch and the show was very good.
