About

Meaning "red-haired one" in French, La Roux is the synth pop project of flame-haired singer/songwriter Elly Jackson and keyboardist/producer Ben Langmaid. Before they collaborated, Jackson, the daughter of actress Trudie Goodwin, grew up listening to folk artists and singer/songwriters like Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell, and drew inspiration from their sounds for her early music. However, Jackson's style changed as she got into the rave scene, taking her music in a more electronic direction. Meanwhile, Langmaid had gone to school with Rollo from Faithless, and the two recorded as house duo Huff & Puff in the mid-'90s; Langmaid also recorded as Atomic and as one half of Huff & Herb for Rollo's label, and was a songwriter for the group Kubb. Jackson and Langmaid began working together in 2006, when they were introduced by a mutual acquaintance. Initially, they called their project Automan and wrote largely acoustic music before scrapping that name and sound for the sleek Prince, David Bowie, and the Knife-inspired style they pursued as La Roux, a moniker Jackson found in a book of baby names. Their debut single, "Quicksand," was released by Kitsune in fall 2008, and earned the band acclaim from the BBC and the Guardian. La Roux supported Lily Allen on her 2009 U.K. tour around the time their second single, "In for the Kill," was released that spring and debuted at 11 on the U.K. charts, reaching a peak position of two; that summer, the single "Bulletproof" debuted at number one a week before La Roux's self-titled album was released. La Roux arrived in the States that fall. Late that year, the duo began working on new material that steered away from the heavy '80s influence of its debut. In early 2010, Skream's remix of "In for the Kill" won Best Dancefloor Filler at the NME Shockwave Awards. That summer, "Bulletproof" entered the Top Ten of Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart, and La Roux released the mix album Sidetracked. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

  • La Roux Rules

In barely an hour, La Roux rocked out the place -- esp. the encore of BULLETPROOF, which brought down the house, and in fact the audience sang most of it while she danced. Her dance moves are fantastic, the band is hot and tight, and with the sole exception of the sit-down ballad, this show was smokin' hot. Great fun! Will see them again.

Performance was totally amazing. Went into it thinking a lot was electronically enhanced but it really is her voice. So unique. Her energy was fantastic!

Awesome and beyond words.. Best show I've seen since Erasure.. Vibe and energy were like very few events I've ever attended and La Roux's performance was simply phenomenal..

She only played for 1 hour, but she was great and entertaining -- great show.

  • Time portal to the '80s

    by Jbaxter on 6/8/10Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

From the wardrobe to the synthesizers to the dance moves, La Roux is a blast from the past, and so much fun. While the crowd leaned more toward the under 21 (and perhaps under 18 set), the venue was a great place to see La Roux plow through their hits like Bulletproof, Quicksand, and Going In for the Kill. The lead singer's vocals don't hold up consistently in a live show, but she was not lacking for energy. And the best part, hands down, of seeing La Roux live was definitely the wonderful, gyrating drummer on stage right. He had a faux pompadour, serious suit, and was all about his dancing while he played. Awesome.

  • La Roux is ready

    by Thanx on 6/8/10Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen Michael Jackson, Sinead Oconnor, Tori Amos, Cindy Lauper, REM, U2, Debra Harry, Prince, Brian May, NIN and at LEAST another 100 other groups. I have played onstage with over half a dozen other groups and orchestras myself. La Roux had these people EATING from their hands unlike anything I have ever seen or experienced before. They are becoming the true superstars that they are. For the first time in 15 years I have hope for music. Thank you Ben and Elly. One last thing.....Mickey, Michael, and William are essential to La Roux. 20 years ago I saw Sinead. She had the #1 song in the US at the time. She played her show with just a boom box onstage. She was the loneliest person I ever saw perform. Never let Elly become that way. Her group is essential to the success of La Roux.

  • Too short!

    by Rosered898 on 6/7/10Ogden Theatre - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

Way too short!! It was an awesome show, but 45 min of music when I paid $40 for the ticket was really frustrating. I have never been out of a show at 10:40pm before!

  • shortest show ever?

by nrfhrdr on 6/6/10Ogden Theatre - DenverRating: 2 out of 5

So I guess the opening act played for a few minutes? We assumed La Roux wouldnt be on till after ten, and would play for more than 40 minutes... got there just after 10 and were very dissapointed to hear maybe 6 songs... hardly my moneys worth for 80 bucks for three of us... they were great but it was not worth spending all that

  • Great live!

by LARouxRocked on 6/6/10Ogden Theatre - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

La Roux was great live! Her voice was amazing! She almost reminded me of Annie Lenox. The projections were very cool. I only wish that they were selling their album, tshirts and other merchandise. I was surprised they weren't. Otherwise, I highly recommend the show.

  • La Roux is too amazing for words!

The whole show was so much fun! Before and after. The types of people La Roux attract are great! Funny and outgoing just like Ellie Jackson. One of the best experiences.

  • Jimmy Neutron Meets Freddie Mercury

by telocece on 6/6/10Ogden Theatre - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

This girl has so much soul and passion for her music. She holds a presence on stage where you cant help but smile and sing with her even if you dont know her music. Her whaling voice and highregister sets her apart from other Americans and music currenlty receiveing airplay. Her band was equally as charasmatic and they looked like they had a great time on stage. It was a privilege to see an almost-famous artist who will grow more interesting and more popular overtime.

  • "As If By Magic"....Pure 80's Synth Pop Bliss!

    by Bjammin72 on 6/6/10Ogden Theatre - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

This was such a fun concert! La Roux's sound took me back to the 80's, the days of bad hair and dorky fashions. They were all in sync and delivered a seamless performance. You could tell they were having fun up there. Ellie Jackson's voice sounded great, just like the album! She was very charismatic and engaging with the audience. I loved that she got into all of the songs, dancing around all over the stage! The set up also worked perfectly, with video imagery complementing the music. They even took a slight detour from their material and covered her favorite Rolling Stones song, "Under My Thumb"(also one of my favs. of theirs) infusing it with their style. My only disappointment was that they didn't play my second favorite song on their cd, "As If By Magic." BUT they did come back for an encore performance and closed the show with their mega dance/club hit and best song, "Bulletproof!" Perfect way to end it!

  • Definitely a must see!

by urockmyworld2662 on 6/4/10House of Blues Dallas - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

This concert is one of those concerts that is enjoyable for everyone even if you don't know all of her songs. This is because of 3 main reasons: 1. The music is catchy and up beat. 2. You can actually understand what she is saying when she sings (important for anyone who doesn't already know the words). 3. La Roux is an entertaining performer with her dance moves and intriguing persona.
