About

Meaning "red-haired one" in French, La Roux is the synth pop project of flame-haired singer/songwriter Elly Jackson and keyboardist/producer Ben Langmaid. Before they collaborated, Jackson, the daughter of actress Trudie Goodwin, grew up listening to folk artists and singer/songwriters like Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell, and drew inspiration from their sounds for her early music. However, Jackson's style changed as she got into the rave scene, taking her music in a more electronic direction. Meanwhile, Langmaid had gone to school with Rollo from Faithless, and the two recorded as house duo Huff & Puff in the mid-'90s; Langmaid also recorded as Atomic and as one half of Huff & Herb for Rollo's label, and was a songwriter for the group Kubb. Jackson and Langmaid began working together in 2006, when they were introduced by a mutual acquaintance. Initially, they called their project Automan and wrote largely acoustic music before scrapping that name and sound for the sleek Prince, David Bowie, and the Knife-inspired style they pursued as La Roux, a moniker Jackson found in a book of baby names. Their debut single, "Quicksand," was released by Kitsune in fall 2008, and earned the band acclaim from the BBC and the Guardian. La Roux supported Lily Allen on her 2009 U.K. tour around the time their second single, "In for the Kill," was released that spring and debuted at 11 on the U.K. charts, reaching a peak position of two; that summer, the single "Bulletproof" debuted at number one a week before La Roux's self-titled album was released. La Roux arrived in the States that fall. Late that year, the duo began working on new material that steered away from the heavy '80s influence of its debut. In early 2010, Skream's remix of "In for the Kill" won Best Dancefloor Filler at the NME Shockwave Awards. That summer, "Bulletproof" entered the Top Ten of Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart, and La Roux released the mix album Sidetracked. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

  • BEST CONCERT EVER

    by InLoveWithLaRoux on 6/9/10Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I got a standing room ticket for La Roux, which was tough since we had to stand for a total of 4.5 hours but IT WAS WORTH IT. My friend and I were in the third row of people and La Roux was so close to us; it was incredible. She brought so much energy to the crowd and didn't stop dancing. You could see the intensity on Elly Jackson's face and how she really was belting it out to please her fans. At one point, I was afraid her voice would break because she was trying so hard to make us happy. I LOVE LA ROUX. Go see her concert!!!

she rocked the show! Everyone had such high energy. It was a little bit of a long wait for her to come out, but it was well worth it.

Elly Jackson (lead singer of la roux) was great! I am a huge fan of la roux and I was worried that I the concert would be a bit of a let down because I liked her cd so much, but the show was AMAZING! She is a great performer and she had great energy. I wish I could go to her concert everyday...

Everyone dancing and singing along. Went fast, but got in a lot of songs and even another version of the "Under My Thumb" cover.

I loved La Roux's energy! She performed her heart out ! I love her english accent-- plus she was very appreciative to her fans. Her concert was sold-out, I can see why. She definitely is a unique performer. Her androgynous look is very hot!

She's a great performer. Non stop dancing, great crowd and stage presence. I wish I could go back to that night again and again.

  • Great but.....short.

    by Jessxx on 6/8/10Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

The show and energy was great but La Roux only played about 6 to 7 songs. What happened? The show kind of ended abruptly. Everyone was expecting more...that was the only disappointing part. It would of be amazing if she played more songs / covers.

Good show. Vocals were not as good as on album and they didn't play two on their only album (as if by magic and reflections are protection), yet they played a weird acoustic song that singer wrote several years ago, and growing pains, the bonus track on the album that is clearly the worst song. Overall, the concert was good and fun because that's the vibe of their music. The quality could have been a little better, but I wasn't complaining at the concert. Openening act was interesting. something Valentine, It hink.

  • I <3 La Roux

    by Nic3ole17 on 6/8/10Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

La Roux is fabulous. Terminal 5 is not. Loved the encore. She only has one album but she made sure to make the show last as long as possible. It was cool that her boyfriend and parents were there, too.

  • I saw red and I liked it!

    by Ksal27 on 6/8/10Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Roux = red. To be honest part of the reason why I was so interested in seeing La Roux live was I was in disbelief that she could hold that distinctive pitch from song to song for an hour but she could and it was so much fun! The opening band, something Valentine was pretty good too. They had this song about fashion that I really liked and the show/choreography reminded me of something out of a Robert Palmer video; not necessarily a bad thing. I think the only point where La Roux lost the audience a bit was when she took an acoustic guitar and soloed a very charming, flowing melody, which I enjoyed but the high schoolers behind me actually said, "ugh, I don't get this song."

  • Great fun

From the opener on it was a great show. La Roux is a fantastic performer, really had the crowd moving and singing along. Good pace to the song selection too. My only complaint is that I wish it was longer, but given that its a newer act, thats understandable.

La Roux was a good time. Short and sweet. There were three other songs from her album I wanted to hear though. She is so cute and the whole band is just great. Their look and sound is right up my alley.
