About
Meaning "red-haired one" in French, La Roux is the synth pop project of flame-haired singer/songwriter Elly Jackson and keyboardist/producer Ben Langmaid. Before they collaborated, Jackson, the daughter of actress Trudie Goodwin, grew up listening to folk artists and singer/songwriters like Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell, and drew inspiration from their sounds for her early music. However, Jackson's style changed as she got into the rave scene, taking her music in a more electronic direction. Meanwhile, Langmaid had gone to school with Rollo from Faithless, and the two recorded as house duo Huff & Puff in the mid-'90s; Langmaid also recorded as Atomic and as one half of Huff & Herb for Rollo's label, and was a songwriter for the group Kubb. Jackson and Langmaid began working together in 2006, when they were introduced by a mutual acquaintance. Initially, they called their project Automan and wrote largely acoustic music before scrapping that name and sound for the sleek Prince, David Bowie, and the Knife-inspired style they pursued as La Roux, a moniker Jackson found in a book of baby names. Their debut single, "Quicksand," was released by Kitsune in fall 2008, and earned the band acclaim from the BBC and the Guardian. La Roux supported Lily Allen on her 2009 U.K. tour around the time their second single, "In for the Kill," was released that spring and debuted at 11 on the U.K. charts, reaching a peak position of two; that summer, the single "Bulletproof" debuted at number one a week before La Roux's self-titled album was released. La Roux arrived in the States that fall. Late that year, the duo began working on new material that steered away from the heavy '80s influence of its debut. In early 2010, Skream's remix of "In for the Kill" won Best Dancefloor Filler at the NME Shockwave Awards. That summer, "Bulletproof" entered the Top Ten of Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart, and La Roux released the mix album Sidetracked. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

La Roux is just as amazing live!
by Anonymous on 7/19/10Club Nokia - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5I really wanted to see La Roux at Coachella but she was one of the only ones I was interested in, so I figured it wasn't worth the trip. Luckily, I found out she was playing in LA from a friend and I immediately bought tickets. She's amazing live and brings such a great energy to the audience. Everyone was dancing and singing the whole time. One of the best concerts I've been to!
La Roux rocked!
by haggistacos on 7/19/104th and B - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5Elly Jackson apologized to the audience for her sore throat, but she sounded just fine to me. From the opening number, ''Tigerlilly,'' to the closing finale number, their big hit ''Bulletproof'' (the audience, including myself, enjoyed singing along to the latter) , Ms. Jackson had us thoroughly under her spell. My only complaint were the opening acts, the first of the two droned on much longer than the headliners got to spend onstage. Overall though, thank you Elly & company!

The show was great for the price of the tickets. She sang very well even though she was sick.
Must SEE
by killthexgirl on 7/18/10Club Nokia - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5Ely was really giving it her all aside from being sick...she got the crowd pumped up, she was amazing with her amzing dance performance! if u are deciding wether to go or not GO!!
La Roux was the best and only highlight!
by abundizzles on 7/17/10Club Nokia - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5It was strange when the doors opened at Club Nokia at 8pm, until Madame La Roux emerged promptly at 9:55. For 1 hour, 55 minutes prior, a DJ played in front of the curtain on a bare stage. He didnt' seem to be mixing anything, just dancing and gesticulating wildly over the mixer (no CDJs or TT's were present, and he scarcely touched his laptop, begging the question, is this just a mixtape you're dancing to?), and the tempo hardly reached 125, probably maxxing out at 120 realistically. So we all just stood around bored for the better part of 2 hours until La Roux hit the stage. But when she did she rocked it right, not that there was anything else at the show to compete with! It was a pretty cool set, my group of friends and I loved the gilded La Roux head that animated her backdrop with crazy eyes alight at the peak of her performance. "Under My Thumb" cover rocked and was a great surprise.
Beyond amazing!
by ekristina on 7/17/10Club Nokia - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5I absolutely love her. Her performance alone was incredible. The band: sensational. Mind you she had a cough and drank tea on stage. She also has a sense of humor which I love. Definitely would go watch her again and again. EPIC.
LA ROUX was LA MAZING in LA!
by Nilz4realz on 7/16/10Club Nokia - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5Elly Jackson was awesome even with a cold. The audience wasn't as into it as I would hope so I think the show would have been even better if the crowd was more energetic. Even in the pit I saw people awkwardly standing with their arms crossed as though they were in an art gallery, not realizing they were actually at a alien 80s style metropolis inspired concert. I was hoping that when Elly announced they were performing a cover it would be thier rendition of Farewell to the fairgrounds (originally by the White Lies), but instead they did a Stones classic, Under My Thumb- which they totally made all their own.

La Roux is incredible!
by KikiBeans on 7/16/10Club Nokia - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5Had a great time. Even though Ellie claimed to have a sore throat, she sounded amazing. I love La Roux! :)
La Roux La Rocks!
by NadineLuvsSD on 7/16/104th and B - San DiegoRating: 4 out of 5Elly was amazing! She came out and told us she's been "fighting a cold" which I assumed since she has been cancelling a lot of concerts lately. Ppl on facebook were being haters, but she put on a great show! The venue was wall to wall packed and I think the energy from the audience pushed her to get crazy. She danced, played the drums a little, did an outfit change, and did a Rolling Stones cover!
Sick again...
by jaimer on 7/16/10Club Nokia - Los AngelesRating: 2 out of 5My dear Elly Jackson, you are a fantastic dancer, designer, and studio artist but I think maybe your voice isn't quite cut out for performing live. I saw La Roux play at the El Rey last winter and we were really disappointed because Elly was sick, and lost her voice, and played the shortest concert I've ever seen. We left thinking "Poor thing. She was adorable, but it kind of sucks that we paid 20 and stood around for four hours to hear her to a 30 minute set list." Since then, her fame has blown up quite a bit, and so she played Club Nokia last night. Although its a pretty big venue I thought we'd finally have the chance to see her play a full set with a bigger band and higher production values. The band was great, the production was great, but once again, Elly was sick and did another ridiculously short setlist. At least we didn't stand around for three hours before this one. So while I'm happy that La Roux is getting the notoriety that they deserve, and while I think they have some great music, they definitely leave quite a bit desired live.

La Roux Never Fails To Amaze
by LaRouxLover on 7/16/10Club Nokia - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5As usual, La Roux killed it! So sweet of her to continue the show despite her sore throat! Lots of dancing and screaming involved all around. And for the people who complain about the short set, she only has 1 album out so give her a break!
La Roux was energetic!
by Meesh610 on 7/16/10Club Nokia - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5I really enjoyed the show and Club Nokia is an amazing venue. We had great seats! She did say that her voice was a little course, but that next time she promised to perform better when she came back. I still loved the show and enjoyed all of her songs. I will definitely be back.
SoSurreal
by humbera on 7/16/10Club Nokia - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5After waiting at least a year and a half to get the chance to see La Roux, I was glad to see that my expectations were topped. Elly performed wonderfully, and although she was sick, concertgoers had no complaints about her performance. It was well worth the wait! I highly suggest seeing them live if La Roux is your thing. I would definitely go to another La Roux show.
La Roux cut it short
by Jooles604 on 7/16/10Club Nokia - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5She put on one hell of a show, but a few major downsides: Doors opened at 8pm, she didnt come on until 10pm, and she ended up only playing for 45 minutes!!!! Granted she apologized because she wasn't feeling well, but cmon, we waited 2 hours! There was no opening act except some boring DJ for two whole hours............
