About

Meaning "red-haired one" in French, La Roux is the synth pop project of flame-haired singer/songwriter Elly Jackson and keyboardist/producer Ben Langmaid. Before they collaborated, Jackson, the daughter of actress Trudie Goodwin, grew up listening to folk artists and singer/songwriters like Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell, and drew inspiration from their sounds for her early music. However, Jackson's style changed as she got into the rave scene, taking her music in a more electronic direction. Meanwhile, Langmaid had gone to school with Rollo from Faithless, and the two recorded as house duo Huff & Puff in the mid-'90s; Langmaid also recorded as Atomic and as one half of Huff & Herb for Rollo's label, and was a songwriter for the group Kubb. Jackson and Langmaid began working together in 2006, when they were introduced by a mutual acquaintance. Initially, they called their project Automan and wrote largely acoustic music before scrapping that name and sound for the sleek Prince, David Bowie, and the Knife-inspired style they pursued as La Roux, a moniker Jackson found in a book of baby names. Their debut single, "Quicksand," was released by Kitsune in fall 2008, and earned the band acclaim from the BBC and the Guardian. La Roux supported Lily Allen on her 2009 U.K. tour around the time their second single, "In for the Kill," was released that spring and debuted at 11 on the U.K. charts, reaching a peak position of two; that summer, the single "Bulletproof" debuted at number one a week before La Roux's self-titled album was released. La Roux arrived in the States that fall. Late that year, the duo began working on new material that steered away from the heavy '80s influence of its debut. In early 2010, Skream's remix of "In for the Kill" won Best Dancefloor Filler at the NME Shockwave Awards. That summer, "Bulletproof" entered the Top Ten of Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart, and La Roux released the mix album Sidetracked. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

  • La Roux is amazing!

by Stillersrock on 11/11/10Trocadero - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

The concert was held in a small venue of 1100. Elly was sincere and gracious. Her voice is as angelic in person as on the air. She kept it simple which made the experience about her music and her voice, not about the "show." The extra added surprise of Far East Movement stopping by and singing three songs (including "Like a G6") made the event a huge success. Our son found La Roux 2 years ago before they were in the US, he happens to be autistic and he knows talent. We have been singing Bullet Proof in our house for years! Elly signed a poster for him and made his world...thanks La Roux, you are a class act and the Tracodera in Philly is a great venue.

  • Elly is awesome

La Roux played every song and sounded amazing. Elly is a great performer and voice sounds just as good live as recorded. The 2 opening bands was a little excessive but overall La Roux was worth the wait!

Everything about this show was amazing from the music they played before the show even started, to Far East Movement's hype show before La Roux, and of course La Roux. Absolutely epic.

Great great show... Ely's hair was so cool! Performance was great... Great energy, good fun... went above and beyond my expectations :) - Openers weren't bad. Venue is awesome. No such thing as a bad view in Culture Room...

This concert was fantastic! Perfect Venue for her and her followers! Sound was great and so was the lighting! Beers at the Culture Room were around $6 bucks and Black Label on the rocks $9 bucks. Tickets were only $18 and I have to say it was well worth the drive from Kendall!

Was a really intimate show, very very good, kind of short for me, but with the right set of excellent songs, the crowd was kind of anxious because this event was suspended two month ago, and she thanks to the crowd for being patient enough to wait for her show, that was re schedule for Nov. 1th. She didn't smile too much, but at least was very kind with the crowd, and we could tell that she was very very amazed with the crowd reaction, I bet she was not specting that from such a small audience.

  • La Roux is refreshingly original!

Great show! Cool style. Fun music! I discovered them while in Jerusalem and was stoked to find out years later that she's making it big in the US.

  • La Roux rocked my world.

The event was rescheduled, but waiting the extra couple months for the show was worth it. The crowd had such a great energy, we were all so pumped up. It was just amazing.

She was absolutely adorable. Loved every minute of this show!

  • Elly was unforgettable

I saw LaRoux@Terminal 5 in NYC and she was great....Fantastic show...However, I do agree that its extrememly difficult to understand when she was addressing the crowd. Between teh heavy accent and loud muisc, it was a bunch of mumbo jumbo. However, the music and singing were right on.....GREAT SHOW!!!!!!!!!!

  • La Roux: BEYOND disappointing

by Heyitzerin on 8/3/10Club Nokia - Los AngelesRating: 1 out of 5

I love La Roux, but not sick-falling-apart-on-stage La Roux. Not when I have to wait +2 hours for them to come on stage, listening to a DJ play, anxiously swaying in a crowd of restless people, wondering when the hell the show is going to start. Okay so finally after two hours of shouts and aggressive demands from the crowd the curtains open and out pops Elly Jackson in her shiny suit and bad ass hair. But what is she saying to the audience? Something about being sick along with an apology, but I (along with the rest of us in the front) cannot understand a word she is uttering over the excessively loud bass. And the rest of the show remained that way- music BLARING over the vocals. The again, this might have been a blessing since poor Elly's voice wasn't the most pleasing and lacked energy entirely. Yet this mishap effected the entire show, resulting in a bore of a performance with no hint of momentum or the slightest inclination of excitement. After holding the microphone out to the crowd to finish the chorus of "Bulletproof" due to the fact that she was far too winded and exhausted to complete the song herself, I knew this show was an utter letdown. Not to mention she excluded "As If By Magic" from her set, which only lasted approximately 50 minutes in entirety. Yes this was only a $30 show, but even for that much money I expected a much higher quality performance. In my opinion, they should have canceled the show and rescheduled to a future date when Elly was well enough to give a decent performance.. oh well. I definitely won't jump to get tickets to her next show, that's for sure.

  • Pluses and Minuses

by blablablah on 7/30/104th and B - San DiegoRating: 3 out of 5

I haven't seen La Roux before or heard her sing live so have nothing to compare her to, but her voice was a bit weak and subdued. She said she was sick so that might have been the problem. Her stage presence however was really entertaining as she danced across the stage and seemed to be genuinely into what she was doing. Dan Black before here was AWESOME, who I had never even heard of before that night.

  • Good but not load enough.

    by Odessa123144 on 7/20/10Club Nokia - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

I was really excited to see La Roux and I did enjoy the event. But sadly she was a little sick and her voice was noticeably affected. My only problem was that the music was not load enough.

  • Eh..

    by Rozee12 on 7/20/104th and B - San DiegoRating: 2 out of 5

I thought the band itself was fun. I couldn't hear a word she was saying or singing. The DJ set before her was way better.

she sounded exactly like she did on the album and was incredible. I would absolutely see it again
