About

Meaning "red-haired one" in French, La Roux is the synth pop project of flame-haired singer/songwriter Elly Jackson and keyboardist/producer Ben Langmaid. Before they collaborated, Jackson, the daughter of actress Trudie Goodwin, grew up listening to folk artists and singer/songwriters like Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell, and drew inspiration from their sounds for her early music. However, Jackson's style changed as she got into the rave scene, taking her music in a more electronic direction. Meanwhile, Langmaid had gone to school with Rollo from Faithless, and the two recorded as house duo Huff & Puff in the mid-'90s; Langmaid also recorded as Atomic and as one half of Huff & Herb for Rollo's label, and was a songwriter for the group Kubb. Jackson and Langmaid began working together in 2006, when they were introduced by a mutual acquaintance. Initially, they called their project Automan and wrote largely acoustic music before scrapping that name and sound for the sleek Prince, David Bowie, and the Knife-inspired style they pursued as La Roux, a moniker Jackson found in a book of baby names. Their debut single, "Quicksand," was released by Kitsune in fall 2008, and earned the band acclaim from the BBC and the Guardian. La Roux supported Lily Allen on her 2009 U.K. tour around the time their second single, "In for the Kill," was released that spring and debuted at 11 on the U.K. charts, reaching a peak position of two; that summer, the single "Bulletproof" debuted at number one a week before La Roux's self-titled album was released. La Roux arrived in the States that fall. Late that year, the duo began working on new material that steered away from the heavy '80s influence of its debut. In early 2010, Skream's remix of "In for the Kill" won Best Dancefloor Filler at the NME Shockwave Awards. That summer, "Bulletproof" entered the Top Ten of Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart, and La Roux released the mix album Sidetracked. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

  • Fantastic

La Roux was amazing. and Far East Movement definitely rocked it like a G6. Light show was pretty great specially when La Roux came onstage and it was an overall awesome show, wish it lasted longer though. An overall great experience, though sound system needs to be better, you can hear the mic or the amps occasionally start to sound a lil raspy/scratchy towards the end of the show for both performances......

My friends and I left saying we had never been to a concert so good - and between us we've been to many: Muse, Mariah Carey, etc. We had so much fun and will not forget the amazing time we had and how fabulous La Roux, Far East Movement, and Francis and the Lights were

If you ever have the chance to see La Roux, DO NOT PASS IT UP!!! The entire band was fabulous but Elly is mesmerizing!! I couldn't take my eyes off her, she has more energy than any artist I have seen perform (and I've seen 100's). She was better than I ever expected... I'm a convert and a La Roux worshiper! GO SEE HER!

La Roux always puts on a sick show... Great opening performances also. Far East Movement killed it!

  • Not a bad time at all

    by cweave2010 on 11/19/10Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Terminal 5 was an average venue but fun nonetheless. Far East Movement got the crowd pumped up and La Roux performed her entire album. Her voice was very true to her recorded sound. She has an unusual dance style but she definitely engaged the crowd.

Following one of the worst opening acts I've ever heard (Francis and the Lights), we were treated to a fun-but-cliched group (Far East Movement) before the main even. La Roux played a predictable but fun set despite Elly Jackson's apparent weariness. It took the crowd a long time to warm up, but the end of the show was energetic enough.

  • Great show!

great performance. was mad that it got canceled in the summer. cannot wait to hear new music. she is a dynamic performer and it was great to see her in the small venue. i would definatly see her again if/when she returns (should also include that i know this is not a solo act and her companions on stage were awesome as well).

  • by fotze on 11/13/10Trocadero - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

the artists performances were amazing, however, the wait times between each band was too too long. like 45 minutes between far east movement and la roux...

  • La Roux was captivating.

by Ashrad on 11/11/10Trocadero - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

Despite months of waiting on the rescheduled concert, La Roux delighted the audience of the Trocadero. Well worth the wait, the sold out show featured multiple opening acts: DJ Sammy Slice, Francis and the Lights, and Billboard-chart giant Far East Movement. Overwhelming cheers filled the venue as the wonderfully dressed Elly Jackson and her band members began their set. Utilizing the small scale of the stage to its fullest potential, La Roux performed in front of shaped-screen which often used projections to compliment the songs. The beautifully androgynous front-woman pranced about the stage and proved her vocal capabilities live. The final song, Bulletproof, was more of a communal sing-along than an individual performance by the singer. Elly extended her microphone out to the audience, which barely needed the amplification. Considering many of the evening's guests purchased tickets as far back as the end of spring, La Roux proved one thing very well: good (electro-pop) things come to those who wait.
