About

Meaning "red-haired one" in French, La Roux is the synth pop project of flame-haired singer/songwriter Elly Jackson and keyboardist/producer Ben Langmaid. Before they collaborated, Jackson, the daughter of actress Trudie Goodwin, grew up listening to folk artists and singer/songwriters like Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell, and drew inspiration from their sounds for her early music. However, Jackson's style changed as she got into the rave scene, taking her music in a more electronic direction. Meanwhile, Langmaid had gone to school with Rollo from Faithless, and the two recorded as house duo Huff & Puff in the mid-'90s; Langmaid also recorded as Atomic and as one half of Huff & Herb for Rollo's label, and was a songwriter for the group Kubb. Jackson and Langmaid began working together in 2006, when they were introduced by a mutual acquaintance. Initially, they called their project Automan and wrote largely acoustic music before scrapping that name and sound for the sleek Prince, David Bowie, and the Knife-inspired style they pursued as La Roux, a moniker Jackson found in a book of baby names. Their debut single, "Quicksand," was released by Kitsune in fall 2008, and earned the band acclaim from the BBC and the Guardian. La Roux supported Lily Allen on her 2009 U.K. tour around the time their second single, "In for the Kill," was released that spring and debuted at 11 on the U.K. charts, reaching a peak position of two; that summer, the single "Bulletproof" debuted at number one a week before La Roux's self-titled album was released. La Roux arrived in the States that fall. Late that year, the duo began working on new material that steered away from the heavy '80s influence of its debut. In early 2010, Skream's remix of "In for the Kill" won Best Dancefloor Filler at the NME Shockwave Awards. That summer, "Bulletproof" entered the Top Ten of Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart, and La Roux released the mix album Sidetracked. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

    New Fan

by Ozgecan on 4/21/13The Fonda Theatre - Hollywood

I went to the concert because my husband asked me to; but I am glad that I was able to experience the concert. That was an unforgettable performance. I can candidly say that their performance was even better than their records. I am now a big fan of La Roux. And I have to admit that The Fonda Theater was the perfect venue for that specific event. Loved it!!!

One of the Best Live Performances I have ever seen

by NumberOneNinja on 4/20/13The Fonda Theatre - Hollywood

La Roux was wonderful! Elly Jackson sounds live just as the recordings. It was high energy the whole time, there wasn't a boring moment. The band all appeared to be enjoying themselves-wonderful showmanship. This far exceeded my expectations and if I had the chance I would go again! Amazing performance. Nice venue (clean and well maintained). Cool Lighting. There was a bit of a wait before the performance started, but they well made up for it.

Don't know what to say except that this show was great! Maybe my judgement is skewed because I'm a huge fan but still, people seemed to have so much fun. Btw, the venue (the Fonda) is fantastic.

    She was fantastic!

by chelsperk on 12/7/10Terminal 5 - New York

I had seen her in concert previously in February which was great. I brought 3 friends with me this time, and La Roux had mentioned that this was her last show after touring for 2 year. Well, she rocked it! she sounded better live than ever before and she poured herself on that stage. For the past few months before the concert I had told my friends how great she was in concert and once I took them to this show, they were thanking me so much because they knew it was going to be a great show going in but it turned out to be so much better. We all want to see her again next time she comes to New York.

    Awesome

by tarasweetiee on 12/1/10Trocadero - Philadelphia

We flew from Los Angeles to see La Roux perform in Philadelphia. I was unable to go to her shows on the West coast so this was my only chance to see her. The show was easily the best part of my trip. Actually the best part was when we were walking back to our hotel after the show and a car pulled up and Elly Jackson got out of the car. She was nice enough to take some photos and chat with us a bit. Great show and she was wonderful live! Great show and she was wonderful live!

    Second times a charm

    by LizBeth12 on 11/23/10Terminal 5 - New York

I saw her at her first NYC show at Terminal 5 in July and it seemed appropriate to see her in her last show of her tour and boy, was I not disappointed. Opening acts Francis and the Lights brought me back to 80s and John Hughes' films and Far East Movement brought everyone to the dance floor. La Roux kicked arse...she never missed a beat as she was singing her high notes and dancing mad on stage. "Tigerlilly", "in for the Kill" and "Colourless Color" made me feel all numb and tingling! her cover of Rolling Stones' "under my Thumb" had everyone jumping on their toes! And of course, "Bulletproof" brought the house down. Just amazing!!!

    LA ROUX

    by MEG0125 on 11/20/10Terminal 5 - New York

I WAS EXCITED TO SEE LA ROUX HER PERFORMANCE WAS QUITE EXPRESSIVE. BUT FAR EAST MOVEMENT WAS ABOVE AND BEYOND WITH THEIR PERFORFORMANCE THAT THEY OPENED BEFORE LA ROUX. I HOPE THAT FAR EAST MOVEMENT WILL BE AROUND FOR AWHILE, THEY WERE MORE IMPRESSIVE THAN THAN LA ROUX. AND THE TOOK THE TIME TO MEET WITH FANS.

    Lots of fun!

by ErikJ on 11/20/10Terminal 5 - New York

This was the second time I saw La Roux at Terminal 5 and it was lots of fun both times. The music doesn't sound the greatest live, I admit, but it sounded good enough to please the crowd. It was clear that Elly appreciates the crowd and the crowd was so into it that it added to the fun. It was great to hear the crowd go wild for such favorites as "I'm Not Your Toy", "In For The Kill", and one of my favorites, "Colourless Colour". La Roux had lots of energy on stage and were clearly enjoying themselves, and the crowd had lots of energy too, which I think makes a really fun show. They also sang their great cover of the Rolling Stones' "Under My Thumb". Of course, the house came down over "Bulletproof"! The only drawback was that it was too short-- they could have sung all the songs from the entire "La Roux" album, but skipped a couple tunes.

    Last show- tons of energy!

by PepperMaker on 11/19/10Terminal 5 - New York

The overall show was lively and simple enough that it was about the music. You could tell La Roux was not skimping, and was giving her all to entertain and keep the crowd amped. She did not disappoint, but you could tell she was tired. She admitted as much, and there were a few times that it was hard to hear her singing the lyrics, seemed like her voice was strained. I am glad that I went and would go to see another La Roux show, it just has to be at a better venue, I want to be able to really dance and enjoy her show. The venue made it difficult to fully enjoy the show, to me this was a waste of her energy.

    Fantastic

by missasianbrooklynite on 11/19/10Terminal 5 - New York

La Roux was amazing. and Far East Movement definitely rocked it like a G6. Light show was pretty great specially when La Roux came onstage and it was an overall awesome show, wish it lasted longer though. An overall great experience, though sound system needs to be better, you can hear the mic or the amps occasionally start to sound a lil raspy/scratchy towards the end of the show for both performances......
