About

Meaning "red-haired one" in French, La Roux is the synth pop project of flame-haired singer/songwriter Elly Jackson and keyboardist/producer Ben Langmaid. Before they collaborated, Jackson, the daughter of actress Trudie Goodwin, grew up listening to folk artists and singer/songwriters like Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell, and drew inspiration from their sounds for her early music. However, Jackson's style changed as she got into the rave scene, taking her music in a more electronic direction. Meanwhile, Langmaid had gone to school with Rollo from Faithless, and the two recorded as house duo Huff & Puff in the mid-'90s; Langmaid also recorded as Atomic and as one half of Huff & Herb for Rollo's label, and was a songwriter for the group Kubb. Jackson and Langmaid began working together in 2006, when they were introduced by a mutual acquaintance. Initially, they called their project Automan and wrote largely acoustic music before scrapping that name and sound for the sleek Prince, David Bowie, and the Knife-inspired style they pursued as La Roux, a moniker Jackson found in a book of baby names. Their debut single, "Quicksand," was released by Kitsune in fall 2008, and earned the band acclaim from the BBC and the Guardian. La Roux supported Lily Allen on her 2009 U.K. tour around the time their second single, "In for the Kill," was released that spring and debuted at 11 on the U.K. charts, reaching a peak position of two; that summer, the single "Bulletproof" debuted at number one a week before La Roux's self-titled album was released. La Roux arrived in the States that fall. Late that year, the duo began working on new material that steered away from the heavy '80s influence of its debut. In early 2010, Skream's remix of "In for the Kill" won Best Dancefloor Filler at the NME Shockwave Awards. That summer, "Bulletproof" entered the Top Ten of Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart, and La Roux released the mix album Sidetracked. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

  • Great show! Loved it!

    by incrediblydisappointed on 10/7/14Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

As usual Terminal 5 was a mess, but also as usual, their engineering was good and the crowd wanted to dance. It was a great show! Went after a long bad day and wasn't really expecting to have nearly as much fun as I did. Those are definitely the good shows, when they take a bad day and make it awesome. Wish La Roux had shows more often. Surprisingly early show for a Saturday, but it was kind of just what I needed.

  • Fantastic show and all around experience

    by orangestreak on 10/7/14Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

La Roux at Terminal 5 was my second La Roux show (so I knew what I was getting into). La Roux's performance and stage presence were fantastic. She did her new songs (which are excellent) and her songs from her first album. The venue was great (although the walk from the subway was a tad long). After the show, I waited outside and got La Roux (Elly) to sign my Trouble in Paradise LP. This brought the show to a higher level, but even without meeting her, I had an excellent time again.

  • Unbelievable experience!

    by mcmickey on 10/5/14Terminal 5 - NYCRating: 5 out of 5

This was the best experience ever! Elly Jackson was freaking AMAZING! I was dancing to her music all the time (So was everyone else). The opening act of Midnight Magic was also great.

  • LOVED IT!

La Roux was amazing, great concert / party, I was able to dance with her music, and I think she was amazing on the stage. great concert, great venue, hope she comes back again soon!

  • La Roux - Delightfully Awkward & Charming

by leSahra on 9/26/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent lighting, great seats, pretty good sound quality. I'd definitely crank the vocals a bit more - I always have trouble in the Fox hearing the vocals from the balcony. (Passion Pit was the worst! I had no idea what song they were singing until the audience joined in from downstairs!) La Roux herself chose a great combination of old and new numbers, and she ROCKED it. I love that she has only one dance move!

So good! Elly Jackson is an amazing performer and the crowd was just right. Everyone was dancing and having a good time, exactly what a great show should be. La Roux has been one of my favourites since their (now her) first album released, and the way Elly vibes off the crowd was enjoyable to see and experience. Definitely helped that the group at the Fox was more chill than other venues and artist's shows I've attended in the past.

  • E. Jackson was great full of energy.

I danced all night long . I had a really great time.

  • Best show I've been to in a while

by akraticbehavior on 9/25/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Sound was great, Elly engaged with the crowd, not as much between-song banter as I would have liked, but all the songs were performed well. Since it's still early days in her North American tour, it was clear she and the band were trying some stuff out (the SoCal shows were a bit different, with Elly on guitar for some of "Uptight Downtown"). All in all, it was a very tight ship. Loved it, would see her again.

  • Girls got moves!!

by sammyscags on 9/25/14Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Thoroughly enjoyed a night of great dance tunes and smooth moves by Elly Jackson! She sure knows how to engage with the crowd and her voice was on point!

I got tickets for something to do. I wouldn't go see them again but the venue and even the opening band I enjoyed.

  • La Roux Rocked House of Blues

by BillFleming on 7/16/14House of Blues San Diego - San DiegoRating: 4 out of 5

Having picked up cheap tickets for this concert, I was initially not expecting much from a band who was famous for one catchy song in the US. However, my friends and I were excited about seeing a concert at the House of Blues, and were open to seeing what La Roux could do on stage. We were greatly surprised at the fun we had there! Not only was the band tight and limber, but Elly, the lead singer, brought style and substance to her performance, at once coy and interactive with the audience. I enjoyed the different versions of new and old material performed: ballads such as "Let Me Down Gently" were turned in dance-rock anthems; new material such as "Uptight Downtown" and "Kiss and Not Tell" were given rockier, edgier treatments; and older favorites such as "Tigerlily," "In for the Kill," and encore show stopper "Bulletproof" were played with energy and reverence for the crowd. As you can imagine, the audience was spent after the tight and festive 75 minute set. I left the concert wanting more . . . which is not always an experience concert goers get to enjoy. Hope the new album meets expectations!

  • Super fun time

by RachelL2425 on 7/15/14House of Blues San Diego - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

I've been a La Roux fan for a few years but hadn't had a chance to see them live. I'm so glad I made the drive down to San Diego to see them! To me, they sounded better live than on their records. Elly Jackson interacted with the crowd and the band had a good vibe. I am loving the new songs off of Trouble in Paradise and can't wait till they release the rest of the album.

  • Great show for fans of the 80s sounds!

by TundeTVONTHERADIO on 6/16/14Music Hall of Williamsburg - BrooklynRating: 5 out of 5

Being that NYC is the band's favorite city in the US, they decided to film the concert for future release.

  • She is great in concert

by NoahWhite on 6/14/14Music Hall of Williamsburg - BrooklynRating: 5 out of 5

She is always so much fun in concert. She played a bunch of her news song and i loved them. Can't wait for her CD to come out.

  • La Roux rocked the Paradise

by FreyaErzulie on 6/9/14Paradise Rock Club - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

We saw La Roux back in 2010 when she played the sold out House of Blues. Great show but no comparison to this show. Elly Jackson's vocals were amazing. Her pitch was perfect and the band had a lot more energy. The songs off the new album were just as enjoyable as her old stuff, and the crowd were well familiar with all the songs and danced along. They played a nice long set doing some numbers we had hoped they'd do. Definitely check out La Roux if you have the chance and check out the new album. Let Me Down Gently is haunting.

  • That was really cool

by FuzzyMcDoul on 6/8/14Paradise Rock Club - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

One of the best concerts I've ever been to. Third row standing room only at a small venue. La Roux was incredible.
