About

Meaning "red-haired one" in French, La Roux is the synth pop project of flame-haired singer/songwriter Elly Jackson and keyboardist/producer Ben Langmaid. Before they collaborated, Jackson, the daughter of actress Trudie Goodwin, grew up listening to folk artists and singer/songwriters like Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell, and drew inspiration from their sounds for her early music. However, Jackson's style changed as she got into the rave scene, taking her music in a more electronic direction. Meanwhile, Langmaid had gone to school with Rollo from Faithless, and the two recorded as house duo Huff & Puff in the mid-'90s; Langmaid also recorded as Atomic and as one half of Huff & Herb for Rollo's label, and was a songwriter for the group Kubb. Jackson and Langmaid began working together in 2006, when they were introduced by a mutual acquaintance. Initially, they called their project Automan and wrote largely acoustic music before scrapping that name and sound for the sleek Prince, David Bowie, and the Knife-inspired style they pursued as La Roux, a moniker Jackson found in a book of baby names. Their debut single, "Quicksand," was released by Kitsune in fall 2008, and earned the band acclaim from the BBC and the Guardian. La Roux supported Lily Allen on her 2009 U.K. tour around the time their second single, "In for the Kill," was released that spring and debuted at 11 on the U.K. charts, reaching a peak position of two; that summer, the single "Bulletproof" debuted at number one a week before La Roux's self-titled album was released. La Roux arrived in the States that fall. Late that year, the duo began working on new material that steered away from the heavy '80s influence of its debut. In early 2010, Skream's remix of "In for the Kill" won Best Dancefloor Filler at the NME Shockwave Awards. That summer, "Bulletproof" entered the Top Ten of Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart, and La Roux released the mix album Sidetracked. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

  • LaRoux a disappointment

by SSSinHouston on 5/31/10House of Blues Houston - HoustonRating: 2 out of 5

They came on stage an hour and a half late, then played for only 45 minutes. A true disappointment, I expected far more.

The whole show was great! La Roux was awesome; her vocals were almost as good as the recorded versions,. and of course, we all loved her dancing! ;)

  • LaRoux - Truly vocal greatness

by Pmoney2010 on 5/31/10House of Blues Houston - HoustonRating: 4 out of 5

This is one of very few times that I've seen a live performance where that vocals sound as good or better than the record. Energetic and lively, the crowd was jumping from start to finish. I would definitely see LaRoux again and would recommend that anyone see them as well.

The La Roux show was great, she is a charismatic performer and sounded incredible. You couldn't take your eyes off her. Lots of great things to come from this artist. If you have a chance to see La Roux in concert, you should definitely go or you will be missing out. Show this artist support and buy the CD, you won't regret it.

Opening act was fantastic: Lovers. La Roux in concert is everything I expected and more. When "Tigerlily" started up, everyone went wild. Elly had so much energy and so did the crowd. Loved the show-- unforgettable!

  • La Roux rocked the house.

by fergus2008 on 4/24/10Showbox at the Market - SeattleRating: 4 out of 5

When La Roux finally hit stage it was Like Magic the crowd was really into the show and Elly seemed to kick it up. Had seen some of the live footage and they didn't seem as lively there as they were in person. It was a Monday night show with Doors at 8:00pm it was kind of late was hoping they might hit stage and do the set. Even with no opener they had the crowd standing around till after 10:00. Crowd still loved it but I guess I'm getting old was kind of hoping for an earlier showing.

  • La Roux was amazing!

Smallish venue but killer show! She is an amazing live performer. I will see them again. The band is amazing!

  • La Roux rocked my socks off!!

by 007WonderGirl on 4/20/10Showbox at the Market - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

The one and only bad thing was that the opening act was a no show but no one thought to inform the crowd about that so we waited around for 2 whole hours... A little frustrating!! But other than that the show was AMAZING!! Elly from La Roux puts on a good show... from the lights, to her dancing and the perfect balance of crowd interaction all made the 2 hour wait seem worth it!! Just from this one show I would want to follow La Roux ANYWHERE!! I'd follow her to London if I could!! : ) Plus the Showbox was the perfect venue as well... so intimate and personal!! Was right up againt the stage practically looking up La Roux's nose... hands down the best show I've EVER experienced (and I've been to plenty of shows)!!! Would definitly have done the whole thing over again if I could... and then I would talk to the hot guy I was squished up against!! Haha

  • La Roux...AMAZING!!!

by LovePeaceVintage on 4/20/10Showbox at the Market - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

This concert was unforgettable! La Roux was perfect!!! And I loved the venue, Showbox at the Market. The opening act, DJ Colby B, was awesome. She rocked. Elle Jackson's vocals were incredible live and the rest of the band was right on too! There was a two hour wait for the band to get on stage, but the wait was definitely worth it!!! They had great stage presence and were so fun to watch! Elle gets down! Lol. It was such a fun show! The audience was in love.

  • La Roux knows how to put on a show!!

by SeeBeDo84 on 4/20/10Showbox at the Market - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

La Roux's show last night at Showbox Market was amazing. I was dancing nonstop to every song - their energy, sound, enthusiasm is so contagious it was hard to not sing along and enjoy the music. Lead singer, Eleanor Jackson looked fabulous and her voice was perfect! Definitely check them out!

  • Intense!

This is the best show I've been to in a very long time. The energy of the band and the lead singer was out of this world. Can't wait to see them play again.

  • La roux was great!!

by Cunter on 4/20/10Showbox at the Market - SeattleRating: 3 out of 5

But the swarms of children were obnoxious! As well as the two hour wait for the show to begin. But she was flawless as well as her singing voice! Highly impressed!!

  • Absolutely Fantastic!

by billy194 on 4/20/10Showbox at the Market - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

It was amazing to see Elly and the rest of La Roux perform last night! Was very good live vocals and music altogether. I loved dancing and singing with everyone. Very impressed with pace of the show, didn't skip a beat. One number after another. Loved hearing the new song, my guess it is called In My Head? Will have to get clarification of that. The band also covered a Rolling Stones song too if I could only remember the title :( If La Roux comes to your area, you should attend! The only thing may have been asking too much but two songs from the album weren't performed, they were Reflections are Protection and Armour Love. Totally worth every penny! Can't wait for more new material to come out.

  • Just plain fun

by dodgyman on 4/20/10Showbox at the Market - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

Spent most of the time in the front, 3 rows back, and just had a great time. The music was a perfect blend of being interesting to listen to, and fun to dance to. Everyone seemed to have a great time, and the whole place had this great energy.

This was a great show. Super Energentic and lots of fun!

  • La Roux rocks live

by Bothari on 4/20/10Showbox at the Market - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

I've been listening to La Roux's music for the last six months, so when my wife pointed out that they were playing at the Showbox I bought up two tickets instantly. The show absolutely rocked. You might think that Ellie's distinctive voice has been heavily modified for the album, but live she sounds just as good, if not better. She has amazing energy on stage, more than almost anyone else I've seen. She had a nice banter with the crowd, and was generally extremely sweet and happy. My one complaint, and it's not really that major, is that it was a super short set. We got there at 8.30 and were warmed up by a good opening DJ set. La Roux didn't come on until 10, and if I remember correctly it was done by 11. It was an energy packed hour, and it was a cheap ticket, but it did leave me wanting for more.

  • la roux rocked, the wait was horrible

by ktk190 on 4/20/10Showbox at the Market - SeattleRating: 4 out of 5

i would recommend la roux to anyone, they sounded amazing! what was not amazing was the wait...that was the most ridiculous wait EVER

  • La Rude...

by Chichifartknocker on 4/20/10Showbox at the Market - SeattleRating: 1 out of 5

Uh Uh! Flat, boring, and not cute. She went on at ten. We stayed for 3 songs. It was just mechanical and not fun. Too bad. I hope she gets her cheese but please don't ask me to ever see her again.

  • La Roux puts on a great live show!

by maydar on 4/20/10Showbox at the Market - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

I was cautious because I had heard reviews of other shows that La Roux was off key the whole show and it was short. I was pleasantly surprised. Elly was very energetic and engaging as well as on key almost the whole night, a couple songs were a little off but most were excellent. They played for about an hour, enough to get through their whole album pretty much. Overall I really liked it a lot.

SOOOOOO GOOOD ABSOLUTELY AMAZING BUT TOO SHORT. she only played for like 45 minutes, we were out of the venue by 10:20. But I would go see her again, SO MUCH FUN YESYESYESYES YOU MUST SEE HER, IF YOU CAN YOU MUST!!!
