About

KURT VILE AND THE VIOLATORS IN CONCERT:

Kurt Vile is the shy guy at the eye of a swirling hurricane of beautiful sonic textures. With his hypnotic fingerpicked guitar melodies and mumbled, cryptic lyrics, Vile lays the dark and earthy groundwork of the group’s sound in concert. His backing band the Violators take the folk-inspired tunes into the stratosphere with lush, spiraling guitars, driving drum patterns, and melodic basslines as each song builds to a climatic conclusion that envelops the listener. Ticket buyers can’t help but get swept up in the warm washes of folk, indie, and psychedelia that Kurt Vile and the Violators consistently deliver in performance.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Kurt Vile (born in Lansdowne, PA in 1980) began his musical journey when his father gave him a banjo at age 14, though he soon switched to guitar to begin recording demos. His career picked up in 2003 when he met Adam Granduciel and formed The War on Drugs, a project that remained his primary focus until the release of the band's 2008 debut Wagonwheel Blues. With his own music calling, Vile left The War on Drugs during the ensuing tour to focus on his solo career, releasing his debut album Constant Hitmaker later in 2008. He inked a deal with Matador for the 2009 follow-up album Childish Prodigy and gained exposure by touring with high-profile labelmates like Dinosaur Jr. and Thurston Moore. His third solo offering Smoke Ring for My Halo arrived in 2011 and signaled a major commercial and critical breakthrough for the singer/songwriter as publications like Pitchfork, Mojo, and Uncut ranked it as one of the best albums of the year. Kurt Vile and the Violators continue to work on their fifth album while perpetually thrilling live audiences with their increasingly sophisticated songs and superlative sonics. Over the course of his career, Kurt Vile has played at famed venues like the Old National Centre in Indianapolis or Webster Hall in New York City.

    When Can They Come Back!!!!

by Japanites on 2/25/19Taft Theatre - Cincinnati

I have seen Kurt and the Violators a number of times and they just keep getting better. The sound was great, the set list was a nice mix of their albums and the versatility of the bass player and guitarist in changing from guitar to bass, even to keys as needed was amazing. Anytime they are in the region I will be there. I really enjoyed the opening band The Sadies. I'd seen them a year ago in Cleveland at the Beachland Ballroom and they were amazing then and amazing opening for Kurt. Their energy level is infectious and I would definitely go see them if they come through as headliners. It was a great choice of the Violators to bring them along.

    Great venue and excellent show

by Scurfie on 2/14/19Club XL - Harrisburg

I almost don't want to say anything about this venue. Not because it was bad, quite the opposite. This venue is new so everything works and is clean, the PA sound is excellent, the food and bar are excellent and free parking too in a well lit large lot. The show was Kurt Vile and the Violators and they didn't disappoint. I never saw Kurt live before but I will definitely look for him when he tours again. Hopefully again at Club XL!

    great show

Kurt Vile is one rockin guitarist, great entertaining show. His fellow band members also rocked the stage. I love his hair too!

    Kurt Vile = impressive

    by G. S. on 12/18/18Moore Theatre - Seattle

Love KV. Even my music snob partner was impressed. No fancy lights or anything just rocking his guitar and hair. He’s filling some much needed shoes in the rock arena. The guys some kind of crazy music genius. My only complaint is about the Moore theater allowing people to swarm the stage. It doesn’t seem right that some people arrived early to get good seats only to be crowded out by entitled people pushing their way forward.

    The song remains the same

    by B. J. on 12/18/18Moore Theatre - Seattle

Live, it becomes obvious that Kurt's songs have an overarching sameness

    more voice, less guitar volume

by billet on 8/29/16Madison Theater - Covington

I enjoyed the show overall. If I had not already known Kurt's music from before, I would've been a little disappointed (like my better half) because the guitars were just too overwhelming AND I love the guitar sounds he generates. The problem was you couldn't hear his voice and I don't know if that was his or the technician's 'fault'? Still, Kurt's a musical savant and I enjoyed his songs from across the various albums. I would see him again.

Fantastic performance. Better live than I could have even imagined. One of the better live performances I have ever seen.

    Tame&Chill

by visavis on 3/7/16Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

Band is cool, very tame laid back jams. If you are expecting a lot of stage presence or banter you won't get it. Mostly stuff from the new album with some old gems thrown in. I'm very into his music so for me it's just fun being there and singing along. With GA I hung out in the pit.

Kurt Vile is my new obsession!

by SheCaughttheKaty on 3/1/16Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

This show was epic! Kurt is an amazing musician with a beautiful stage presence. He played a bunch from the new album as well as from Smoke Ring for my Halo. The Violators were also outstanding! I can't wait to see him again!!!

Even more apathetic than studio sound

by UCanCallMeNancy on 3/1/16Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

Was not expecting a ton of energy out of Kurt but, Jesus Christ, the guy seemed so far removed from the performance. Violators sounded good; Kurt sounded off. Second time I've seen him on most recent tour -- same outcome both events. Love the studio stuff but unwillingness and lack of enthusiasm to re-create live is disappointing.

    Vile You Were Gone

by dadumdumdada on 10/29/15Saint Andrews Hall - Detroit

Having sung the last song of opening band Luke Robert's set, Kurt Vile started his portion of the show playing a lot off of his latest album. In the middle there was an acoustic set, marred, as usual, by people talking in the background. He kicked it back into high gear towards the end, closing the encore with a raucous version of "Freak Train."

At least Waxahatchee was great anyway

by officedad on 10/5/15Paradise Rock Club - Boston

Katie Crutchfield has evolved from a low-fi singer songwriter on her first recording to a full blow band on her latest Ivy Tripp. Waxahatchee was in good form Friday night. Great musicians, a tight band and the harmonizing with her sister (I believe?) was nice. I like Luke Roberts album Big Bells and Dime Songs but he played solo and was lost in the mix with everyone talking over him. Kurt Vile & the Violators struggled. Kurt spent more time between songs, fussing over his gear and hair, than he did actually playing the songs. It was like watching a rehearsal. A real let down considering he's one of today's best songwriters.

    KV, no Krimes

by Anonymous on 10/28/13Terminal 5 - New York

Mostly songs from Wakin and Smoke Ring. Band was piling on luscious layers of sound varying between long jams and more concise approaches. Had a couple of issues with the mix during the show, though. Encore was 14 m version of Goldtone. Loved it.
