About

The multimedia project Kraftwerk was started in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider.  They set up their electronic Kling Klang Studio in Düsseldorf, Germany, where they conceived and produced all Kraftwerk albums.  By the mid 1970’s Kraftwerk had achieved international recognition for their revolutionary electronic ssoundscapes and their musical experimentation with robotics and other technical innovations.  With their visions of the future, Kraftwerk created the soundtrack for the digital age of the 21st century.  Their compositions, using innovative techniques, synthetic voices and computerised rhythms, have had a major international influence across an entire range of music genres: from electro to hip hop, from techno to synthpop.

In their live performances, Kraftwerk – Ralf Hütter, Henning Schmitz, Fritz Hilpert,  Falk Grieffenhagen – illustrate their belief in the respective contributions of both man and machine.

Starting with the retrospective of their Catalogue at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2012, in recent years Kraftwerk have returned full circle back to their origins within the Düsseldorf art scene of the late Sixties. Bringing together music and perfomance art, their 3-D concerts are a true  "Gesamtkunstwerk – a total work of art.”  The concert series at the MoMA was - among others - followed by further presentations at Tate Modern Turbine Hall in London, Akasaka Blitz in Tokyo, the Opera House in Sydney, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin.

In 2014 Ralf Hütter and his former partner were honoured with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

    Kraftwerk Never Disappoints!

by Jokie X on 7/12/22Bill Graham Civic Auditorium - San Francisco

My mind remained pleasantly overwhelmed for the two hours or so that Kraftwerk played. The 3-D glasses worked great. The visuals and music blended so well together I became lost in abstractions and concepts. Their minimal lyrics floating across the 3-D screen enhanced the impact of the visuals and the associations with the words. It feels like they mean a lot more than what they say. It's a boogie for the body and the brain!

    Great show

    by Travelgirl92224 on 7/12/22Paramount Theatre - Seattle

Kraftwerk never disappoint. Some old and some newer material accompanied by a stunning 3D show. The beauty of the Paramount theater complimented the experience.

Kraftwerk 3D was the best show I've ever been to, along with Aphex Twin.

The music, show, workers, all excellent. The chairs sucked.

by Brian on 7/12/22Paramount Theatre - Seattle

Pretty much described it in my title. Need better accessibility for people with walking issues to get to the restroom.

Amazing show! Very cool with the 3D. 2 hour set plus encore. No opening act. Godfathers of electronic music. If you are truly into EM, you cant miss this show. Waited for 3 years with our tickets!

Kraftwerk - interesting but too much of the same

    by Left_Early on 7/12/22Paramount Theatre - Seattle

Show with 4 men with computers on stage started 20 minutes late. Then, it was a cool thing to have 3D - but the imagery and the music was all the same, it became tedious with no connection to the audience or playfulness at all. It started late and we left early!

If only we could have danced…

by Tiger on 7/12/22Paramount Theatre - Seattle

They were great…blissfully. Aging well, and a tribute to nostalgia and a nod to the distance we’ve travelled. I did want more on the video side but that’s not why I was there so…the 3D glasses were nice. Earplugs might have also been a nice touch.

Been into Kraftwerk since the '70s and always wanted to see them. They were awesome. The concert actually exceeded my expectations.

Good sounds and graphics but low energy!

by nekodan on 7/11/22Bill Graham Civic Auditorium - San Francisco

Easy to purchase tickets. Easy to safely park near the venue. Easy to get into the venue. Very comfortable climate control. The set was neat and the graphics and sound were very good. I wish the band had a little more indication of which band member is making which sound.

Kraftwerk was perfect. The venue not so much.

by Dylan on 7/11/22Bill Graham Civic Auditorium - San Francisco

Ok so Kraftwerk was amazing. Their live show is sooo good and seeing them for the first time was super magic. Bill Graham has the worst sound of any venue I've been to in the Bay. The volume was set to polite luncheon, not immersive 3D concert experience. It's always like that there. Place doesn't have speakers enough to fill the space. That said once I hooked in, it didn't matter that much. Kraftwerk are freaking Gods.

    Kraftwerk 3D SF

by Jill the Pill on 7/11/22Bill Graham Civic Auditorium - San Francisco

Thank you to Kraftwerk for touring! I am grateful to be able to see this legendary band in person. This is my second time - I saw them 7 years ago in Berkeley. I have loved them since I was in high school in the early 80s. Although they came on a little late, they played for two hours. The 3d effect was cool. I loved that they smiled as they bowed before leaving.

    Kraftwerk SF 7.6.2022

by Kenny B on 7/9/22Bill Graham Civic Auditorium - San Francisco

I purchased tickets over 2 years ago in anticipation of seeing the greatest techno band ever. Then COVID shuts us down. Finally, the show happens and how amazing it was! The 3D was awesome, the music perfect, the audience engaged. Looks like the Bill Graham Civic has been renovated, and the staff were amazing! Watched show from floor and we danced, alot! Beautiful night, all around!

    Simple, retro tech and beautiful

by Kraut rocker on 7/9/22Bill Graham Civic Auditorium - San Francisco

The venue was industrial like and that felt right. At first I was worried, I had taken my 22 year old daughter to the show and the sound was a bit muddled. Airwaves one of my oldies favorites was crucified by poor EQ. Couldn’t hear the voices and the melody. The 3D started slowly with numbers dancing and waving and it felt awkward to hear people counting in different languages until I got it. When I stopped my internal saboteurs and decided to not worry about what we there were experiencing I suddenly realized they were taking us into the world of robots and computers. Robots were counting showing us they want to be like us, part of our life. Then the show started to make sense and I had tears in my eyes when the played radio activity, man machine, we are the robots… autobahn, trans Europe express, salace lab and even Tour de France felt like parts of our humanity reviewed and retold. The kind of things people could watch/hear 2 centuries from now and get it. Graphics were cute, sometimes grandiose like in space lab and sometimes funny, playing with the audience. At some point they left the stage and I thought ok that was not bad except they didn’t play a couple of my favorites. But it was a false exit giving rise to the final bouquet which was simply epic. By that time the EQ guy had finished his beer and was back, the music was clear and you could hear all of it. I won’t say more in case you go see it. If you know kraftwerk and hesitate? Don’t. The magic is still there just like 45 years ago when I was listening to radio activity on the jukebox while having a beer and playing pin ball at the local bar.
