About

The multimedia project Kraftwerk was started in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider.  They set up their electronic Kling Klang Studio in Düsseldorf, Germany, where they conceived and produced all Kraftwerk albums.  By the mid 1970’s Kraftwerk had achieved international recognition for their revolutionary electronic ssoundscapes and their musical experimentation with robotics and other technical innovations.  With their visions of the future, Kraftwerk created the soundtrack for the digital age of the 21st century.  Their compositions, using innovative techniques, synthetic voices and computerised rhythms, have had a major international influence across an entire range of music genres: from electro to hip hop, from techno to synthpop.

In their live performances, Kraftwerk – Ralf Hütter, Henning Schmitz, Fritz Hilpert,  Falk Grieffenhagen – illustrate their belief in the respective contributions of both man and machine.

Starting with the retrospective of their Catalogue at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2012, in recent years Kraftwerk have returned full circle back to their origins within the Düsseldorf art scene of the late Sixties. Bringing together music and perfomance art, their 3-D concerts are a true  "Gesamtkunstwerk – a total work of art.”  The concert series at the MoMA was - among others - followed by further presentations at Tate Modern Turbine Hall in London, Akasaka Blitz in Tokyo, the Opera House in Sydney, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin.

In 2014 Ralf Hütter and his former partner were honoured with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

So good, I think I learned something about music!

by RhythmCoreAlpha on 3/22/14Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

Kraftwerk was amazing! Not only did they play the entire "The Man Machine", but also a huge selection from all of their albums, including almost half of Computer World. (But not my favorite song, "Pocket Calculator", alas...) I thought the 3d would be kinda hokey, but actually it added a lot to the show. It was like the album covers come to life, especially on "Autobahn". It really brought out the feeling of motion on "TEE" in ways I didn't understand before. I feel like I now understand Kraftwerk's music in a way I didn't before, and perhaps music as a whole in new ways. I left grinning from ear to ear, definitely the best musical experience I have had in ages.

Kraftwerk and the 3D videos were amazing and adorable. Kind of weird to sit quietly while listening to electronic music. None of the staff seemed to point us in the right direction to our seats. It was confusing.

    They butchered Radioactivity!

by Littlenaeko on 3/21/14Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

They tried to give this album an updated feel and really, they should have just played the album the way they recorded it years ago. Radioactivity is flawless. Unfortunately this performance was not. Once they played Trans Euroupe Express they brought it. The music was louder, it had a fresher feel and the graphics for this song were way better. Overall, it was still a really great experience. I'm just glad I was able to see all 4 of them play 10 yrs ago because that show was flawless. If this show had been my only time seeing Kraftwerk songs live I would've been disappointed!

    Radio-Activity 3/18, sound problems?

by Anonymous on 3/21/14Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

Although I did enjoy Tuesday's concert, it did seem that there were some sound issues. I am open to the possibility that where we were sitting (Orchestra East Row C, seats 71-73) contributed to a perceived 'dead zone' I noticed 'behind' me. It seemed like on some songs I could barely hear the melody (I wish I would have taken notes as I can't remember which song/songs it was during). Personally, I felt that the 3D images and multimedia show distracted me from the music so I closed my eyes through most of it to concentrate on the music. The song Radio-Activity was one of the best and the imagery did not distract me from this particular song.

    No 3D flasses

by SamS on 3/21/14Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

The ushers ran out of 3D glasses, so we were stuck watching a 3D show without the glasses. Pretty annoying. Thankfully, this was Kraftwerk, so the music more than made up for it. But still, could have been a much better experience.

Kraftwerk was amazing, WDCH staff wasn't

by Mapuche on 3/21/14Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

Music and animation were both spectacular, but it's Kraftwerk, I already knew that. The only problem was that Walt Disney Concert Hall crew, who was really good in preventing anybody in taking pictures prior and during the show, let everybody who was in late (at least 20-25 people) in, and so I had to stand up several times and for the first 10 minutes of the concert my sight was often blocked, and you'd understand that in a concert were the visual part is really important, it's not the best. Now, I've been to several concert halls around the world, and they usually have bels ringing 5 before the show. When the show starts, if you're in you're in, if not, nobody cares if you have to finish your beer and whatnot, you stay out. This is also what you'd expect to a more educated crowd that usually goes to classical concert hall. Well, this wasn't the case...

    Decent concert - inept staff

by battlepriest on 3/21/14Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

It was wonderful to see and hear the seminal electronic pop band Kraftwerk. The sounds and visuals were very well presented, and if that were all there was to the experience, I would have nothing but praise for the evening. However, I was disappointed by the apparent confusion of the staff. We were told on entry that there would be no return to the auditorium if anyone left during the performance to use the restrooms, yet this rule was consistently waived for everyone who left and wished to return during the performance. My sightlines were frequently interrupted by patrons leaving and returning. Rules regarding recording and cellphone use were inconsistently applied, and my enjoyment of the concert was interrupted by the use of bright cellphones by patrons around me throughout the evening. Repeat offenders should have been asked to leave the auditorium, but were not. A+ for the music. Solid F for the staff of the Walk Disney Concert Hall.

    KRAFTWERK RADIO-ACTIVITY 3D

by Piston22 on 3/21/14Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

the venue was chill because they let me bring my own wine and pound it in the lobby. The seats were a little small. The sound was perfect. The 3d glasses were cheap and uncomfortable. The visuals were perfect low fi and simple. I am not too convinced every single guy on stage is necessary like it once was but I like the fact they have kept true to the sound, look and feel of the Kraftwerk aesthetic. They were supposed to play one album cover to cover. I am glad the played more than that.

    Wunderbar!!!

by KlingKlang1 on 3/21/14Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

Excellent sound, production and performance. 3d visuals were surprising and effective. The "greatest hits" element of concert after the album was over (relatively short RadioActive) was a huge bonus. Great to see and hear these legends of electronic music. Musik...Non Stop!

    Kraftwerk 3D incredible..

by Hauptfuhr on 3/21/14Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

Kraftwerk, proving once again, they are truly, the godfathers of electronic music.. so many artists have sampled them over the years but it's best to hear the original every time.. 3D visuals are amazing and add a whole new dimension to their show mixed with original and remixed versions of their songs.. and the sound was possibly, the best I have heard at a concert, ever..
