  • Acoustics Disappointment

by Concert Attendee on 4/22/24Tennessee Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 3 out of 5

The musicians and performance were great. The sound quality from the stage at the Tennessee Theater was poor. Strong and impactful pieces sounded so far away that they lost their impact. I found myself wishing that it had been amplified. I have tickets for another symphony event next month. I very much hope it will be amplified.

Great show!!! Love the KSO! Wonderful experience as usual.

  • Blast from the past

by Magistra Weaver on 4/11/24Knoxville Civic Auditorium - KnoxvilleRating: 3 out of 5

This concert featured both unfamiliar and very familiar tunes from the Broadway team of Rodgers and Hammerstein. I wish there had been more familiar tunes; it seemed like it was a 50/50 split. However, the vocalists were amazing, and the KSO sounded great, as always. There was one awkward moment when a donor was allowed to conduct the orchestra, and it was difficult to watch. I will definitely attend future KSO performances and support this very integral piece of the Knoxville arts community.

  • What Talent

by cillab on 4/9/24Knoxville Civic Auditorium - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

The KSO and the vocalists were so very talented. They collaborated on a wonderful tribute to Rodger’s and Hammerstein. My only complaint is that the Civic Auditorium needs to install handrails on the stairs in the balcony—- it is a dangerous exit for older patrons!

  • Chicago Fan

by Jan on 3/12/24Knoxville Civic Auditorium - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

We recently saw Knoxville Symphony Chicago Nights. It was wonderful to hear Jason Scheff and the Orchestra play Chicago music that brings back so many fabulous memories. I grew up in Chicago and have been a huge fan since they started as CTA. It was a great evening from start to finish.

  • KSO is the best!!

by AKB on 2/20/24Knoxville Civic Auditorium - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Nothing beats a rock and roll song played by an orchestra. And Knoxville Symphony Orchestra does it right. It helps that the music they played, The Moody Blues, lends itself very nicely to orchestra music. After all, their original tunes were played by an orchestra.

  • Lifelong Dream Come True

by Sami on 2/14/24Knoxville Civic Auditorium - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

I have been a fan of the Moody Blues since I was a teen back in the 70's. I've always wanted to attend one of their concerts. Although there was only the drummer from the band now, the singers and orchestra did a fantastic job and it was heaven to listen to them. Although attending a concert with almost all of us being seniors was very different from attending a concert in my teens. Thank you so much!

  • Moody Blues music but not Moody Blues members

by htmagic on 2/13/24Knoxville Civic Auditorium - KnoxvilleRating: 3 out of 5

When I saw this, I was excited to see the Moody Blues performing in concert with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra (KSO). The music was Moody Blues but the performers were not Justin Hayward, and/or John Lodge, the 2 living members of the band. The 4 performers were a band named Go Now. Gordy Marshall, drummer, toured the world with The Moody Blues for 25 years. For six of those years, he also toured with Justin Hayward on the arena tours of Jeff Wayne’s The War of the Worlds. He also learned to play the flute and played Ray Thomas' flute, named Sophie, and sounded just like him on the song. Mick Wilson (who mostly sang Justin Hayward's vocals and played guitar, sounded spot-on the songs that were played. Nick Kendall (lead guitarist, backup vocals) played the lead guitar just like the songs on the albums. Patrick Duffin, bass guitar, played the bass like John Lodge and sounded like him on the vocals. The group was good and played identical to the songs on the albums. Interesting enough, when the real Moody Blues played some of these songs, they were not exact to the songs on the album. Years ago, the Moody Blues came to Knoxville and played with the KSO for their Red Rocks tour across the country. Those songs at that time were almost identical to the songs on the albums. I was somewhat disappointed when I realized the real Moody Blues were not performing, especially at the high prices for tickets. This should have been made clearer with a better description of the performers and a link to their website. As a result, I'm giving it 3 stars for that reason. The music was 5 stars with the KSO and the performers, but the obsfucation and high prices dropped the overall rating.

  • Outstanding!

Knoxville symphony’s performance of the “Music of the Moody Blues” along with the group”Go Now” was outstanding -far exceeding my expectations. What a rich and full, all encompassing experience that reignited my old memories and gave me new ones!

  • Symphonic Moodies - Best of Classic Rock

    by Markh13 on 2/13/24Knoxville Civic Auditorium - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Moved here in last year and have been intending to go to the Knoxville Philharmonic since I arrived. Their pops concert with the music of the Moody Blues was a smart idea and a first chance for me to try them out. I'm going to go more often and for some of their regular performances. Their flautist did a Magnificent job with some difficult flute solos. While it was interesting seeing some of the regular grey haired philharmonic patrons settle into the more rock and roll pieces, they need to understand that the Moody Blues brought many a young listener back to classical music and the philharmonics as far back as their infamous Red Rocks performances with the Denver Symphony Orchestra. I was one of them. Great job Knoxville!

  • KSO January 25

by musiclvr on 1/28/24Tennessee Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

The youth symphony is outstanding! Regarding KSO: The orchestra is very good, especially the large string section. Regarding this concert: First half before intermission was lively and crisp. Held the attention of the audience. After intermission, Ho-hum, literally. I personally love Mahler, however this was not a good choice to end the evening. Too long and relaxing. People in the audience were falling asleep! The woman right next to me had a nice little nap! No fault with the orchestra or musicality. The woman’s voice in the fourth movement was not suited for the child-like sound which is intended in this symphony. Again, no fault with her singing, just not right for this setting.

  • STAR WARS

by AB on 1/18/24Knoxville Civic Auditorium - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

This event superseded my expectations. I am amazed at how beautifully choreographed the symphony played during the film. I will definitely take advantage of future events. This was a 10/10; KSO is a true gem for Knoxville, TN! Thank you!
