About

Kevin Patrick Smith is an American filmmaker, actor, comedian, comic book writer, author, YouTuber, and podcaster. He came to prominence with the low-budget comedy buddy film Clerks (1994), which he wrote, directed, co-produced, and acted in as the character Silent Bob of stoner duo Jay and Silent Bob. Clerks won the "Award of the Youth" and the "Mercedes-Benz Award" at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival, the "Filmmakers Trophy" at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for three Independent Spirit Awards (Best First Feature, Best First Screenplay and Jeff Anderson for Best Debut Performance).

The film Jay and Silent Bob also appeared in Smith's later films Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Clerks II and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, which are set primarily in his home state of New Jersey. While not strictly sequential, the films have crossover plot elements, character references, and a shared canon known as the "View Askewniverse", named after Smith's production company View Askew Productions, which he co-founded with Scott Mosier.

Since 2011, Smith has mostly made horror films, including Red State (2011) and the "comedy horror films" Tusk (2014) and Yoga Hosers (2016), two in a planned series of three such films set in Canada dubbed the True North trilogy.

Last year, Smith executive produced Masters of the Universe: Revelation for Netflix and coming later this year, Smith will release the much anticipated Clerks III via Lionsgate.

Smith owns Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash in Red Bank, New Jersey, a comic bookstore which became the setting for the reality television show Comic Book Men (2012-2018). As a podcaster, Smith co-hosts several shows on his SModcast Podcast Network, including SModcast, Fatman Beyond, and the live show Hollywood Babble-On. He is known for /participating in long, humorous Q&A sessions that are often filmed for DVD release, beginning with An Evening with Kevin Smith.

  • Red State not sure where the horror was

by Anonymous on 3/10/11Harris Theater - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

I just did not think it was the great. Not the movies fault but it was hard to hear. The dialogue in the church scene just went on and on. I at not time felt scared or freaked out. I was more horrified by the "Stink palm" in Mall Rats.

The movie was not only amazing, it was brilliant. Kevin Smith has outdone himself with Red State. He says it's simply a horror movie but it's sooooo much more than that... it's funny yet extremely creepy and a very important statement on our country as it stands today. Smith was also as entertaining as it gets during the Q & A, proving why he is one of the best public speakers alive and was not only considerate of everyone who asked questions, but also those who didn't. The man appreciates his audience like no other public figure does and they love him for it.

  • Kevin Smith - REDtastic!

    by TyranT16 on 3/10/11Harris Theater - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Kevin Smith was on his game during the intro and post Q&A - funny, insighful, generous - but more importantly, his new film "Red State" is incredible. John Goodman gives one of my all time favorite Goodman performance and Michael Parks held me captive as Abin Cooper. Dave Klein's cinematography was chilling and Smith's editing was spot on. The Red State Tour was worth ten times the price of admission and I would gladly open my wallet again to support the creative collaboration that went into this entire experience: a step forward in the future of film production and distribution.

  • Red State Rocked!

    by JChandler03082011 on 3/10/11Harris Theater - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

We had excellent seats (don't think there is a bad seat in that theater), the movie on its own was outstanding and seeing it 7 months before the release nationwide was a plus. The Q and A after the movie was very entertaining, would do it again in a minute!

  • Kevin's Movie was INTENSE

by TMSully on 3/10/11Harris Theater - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Kevin's new movie is not a comedy, but done in true Kevin Smith form. This intense psychological drama may offend some, but it definitely makes you think. I really enjoyed it, as I have almost all of his prior movies. A MUST SEE...

  • Good film and speaker

by DachnoPiitu on 3/10/11Harris Theater - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

'Red State' is an entertaining flick. It's about 1.5 hrs long. If you like horror, this is a must see. Kevin Smith did about 1.5 hrs of Q&A after the movie. He is a humorous, candid, and self-deprecating individual. Due to the cost of the tickets, the majority of the audience were die-hard fans and likely devoted Smodcast listeners. Overall the Harris Theater is nice. It's located right near Millennium Park. The staff was very friendly. The seats could be comfier. The bathrooms were clean and well stocked. Parking is easy and $16 with validation. Take a look at their site for more details: http://www.harristheaterchicago.org/ .

  • Go see this film!

    by Jace1013 on 3/10/11Harris Theater - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Kevin Smith brought his latest film with him to Chicago for an early screening and followed it with a Q&A afterwards. I'm a long time Smith fan and I have to say this is my favorite film he has done. It's so unlike his other work that if you saw the film without credits you wouldn't know it was his. I don't want to comment too much on the film itself since it doesn't get a wide release until October and spoiling it would make your experience less exciting. When Kevin says this is a horror movie, he's right but it's not a horror movie by today's standards. It's part horror part thriller. The people in the film believe everything they say and do is 100% right and that is were the horror lies. Knowing these people could actually exist in this world is pretty damn scary. Kevin's Q&A afterwards was a nice counter balance to the film. The film goes to dark places fast and doesn't let up, so when Kevin came out and answered our questions while throwing in jokes it really helped lighten the mood for everyone. Kevin is just a nice guy that he had no problem answering even the zaniest questions. If you get a chance to see him live with or without this movie, do it. I personally can't wait for October so I can see this again. Kevin is releasing it himself without help from major studios. It's a big undertaking but this movie stands on it's own and is worth the price of admission

The film was, to use Kevin's word, unsettling. So excited for the rest of the world to see it. The Q&A was a lovely way to wind down and reflect upon the movie before driving home. Also, having listened to all of the SModcast Network podcasts, I've heard many stories retold on different shows before. However, even when I'd heard the story before, Kevin was great about telling it differently and telling unique details of the story. He is truly grateful for his fans and it shows.

  • Exciting watching history be made

by Everyn on 3/10/11Harris Theater - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

The movie was...unbelievably good. Funny and smart, paired with brutally real violence. Unforgettable and highly recognizable cast. Q&A afterwards was a great chance to be further in the moment of a very creative and unique film experience. I'll tell my grandiose about this one day!

  • Big Fan

by knatt on 3/10/11Harris Theater - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

If you are a fan of Kevin Smith or his many movies, podcasts, Q&A's or comics, etc.., then you will have a blast seeing his new movie AND spending a couple hours of him answering yours and others questions about anything that he has done. It is one of those once in a lifetime things you can do...unless you go more than once, then it really wouldn't be, but whatever...

  • by Anonymous on 3/10/11Harris Theater - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

The film was amazing. Great story and great performances by the cast. If you did not make it to the show to see the movie, you missed out on an excellent movie.

  • Mature & Unsettling, Red State Delivers Another Si

    by KJD1035 on 3/10/11Harris Theater - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Being a Kevin Smith fan, I went into this movie with high hopes but had pretty much settled on the fact that no matter what, I'd probably love it even if it was 90 minutes of Kevin staring at the camera saying absolutely nothing. I can assure you, however, this was not your typical Kevin Smith movie. No Jay or Silent Bob, not even a Zack or Miri. This was a hard core, edge of your seat, action thriller that scared the bejesus out of me thinking perhaps there really are people out there like the characters Kevin created with the Five Points Church group. The level of suspense is taken to a higher level with the lack of using a soundtrack. As Kevin said in his Q&A after the movie, he didn't want music to make you decide how you felt about a character or scene. I found myself struggling between terror, pity and disgust for the church members. I held my breath as certain chase scenes played out. The stand-off scene is equal to the gun play that occurs in Michael Mann's Heat with Pacino and Deniro; it just never ends it seems. This would be my kind of movie regardless of director, but the fact that Kevin Smith directed it, proves his range and abilities, but it still comes down to his great art of telling a story. And this time, a pretty damn scary one!

  • Movie and Q&A was fantastic!

by dgiunta on 3/10/11Harris Theater - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

The Red State USA Tour experience was absolutely fantastic. The movie was very well-done. Not your typical Kevin Smith movie, and the Q&A afterwards was Smith's typical, frank discussion, filled with long-winded tales and circular stoner-answers. I found it pretty entertaining and, given my own interest in filmmaking, pretty inspiring.

  • AWESOME

by thekapn on 3/4/11The Midland - Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

Yes tickets are expensive for this event. But are actually not that bad considering not only are you going to hear Kevin Smith Q&A (check out the Evening With Kevin Smith series) but also an early preview of his much hyped new horror movie Red State months before it's official release in Oct. that you would easily pay almost $20 a ticket to see alone in this theater. Smith is hilarious and this is sure to be a one of a kind offer

  • rent the dvd

Have you seen any of the Evening with Kevin Smith DVDs? Have you liked them? Yes? GO SEE HIM LIVE. So worth the money. He was hilarious and talked for about three hours, which I totally wasn't expecting. His live events are Q&A meets story time meets stand up comedy. I highly recommend seeing Mr. Smith live.
